Greek
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
Few countries are referred to as ancient; Greece is one of them. Yet, as we think of her historical age as one of the past, her culinary age is one of the present. Rich in grains and vegetables, flush with seafood, sweet with honey, seasoned with capers, lemons and yogurt, and gleaming in the green-gold of olive oil, the foods of Greece rise up like a phoenix with vitality and passion.
Continental Corner 123 West Richardson Ave., Summerville 871-1160 $$ It may not be your yiayia's (grandmother's) cooking but the Continental Corner will please your Homeric needs for gyros, Greek salad, souvlaki and an enduring assortment of house specialty plates. Since 1973, the "Corner" has been bearing Greek gifts of the culinary kind.
Athens Restaurant and Grill, Athens CafeAthens Pizza Express 1939 Maybank Highway, James Island 795-0957 $$ George and Vasilios Koutsogiannakis established a veritable city-state with their restaurant, cafe, and pizza parlor. The restaurant and grill offers a true Greek salad, horiatiki, with no leafy greens at all, and good assortment of meze and enough desserts to keep baby Zeus alive. So saddle up your Trojan Horse and plan to get your belly filled.
Zeus Grill and Seafood725 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Mount Pleasant 388-9992 $-$$ www.zeusgrill.com
Olde Towne Grill and Seafood229 King St., downtown 723-8170 www.oldtownegrill.com $-$$ 2093 Eagle Landing Blvd., North Charleston 863-1001 www.northtownegrill.com $-$$ In business since 1972, the Fokas family brings the flavors of Greece and the hospitality of their native Kefalonia "tavernas" to life on both the peninsula and Mount Pleasant and north Charleston. Hummus and spanokopita, and a tableside-flamed saganaki will happily get you on your way to enjoying the flavors of Greece. The slow-roasted chicken brings forth primal urges of nibbling the bones.
