Son's death leads to charge of homicide by child abuse

Melissa Anna McKinney
A Johns Island woman was charged with homicide by child abuse after her 5-month-old son died Tuesday, and prosecutors say they will re-examine the previous death of her daughter and a miscarriage. Melissa Anna McKinney, 21, told investigators that the child was fussy and didn't want to sleep, so she placed a folded blanket over his face so he wouldn't disturb other people in the house, an affidavit said. It said the mother fell asleep with her son lying beside her in the bed, and when she awoke she found him face down under her chest with his face pressed into the mattress. The baby was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he was revived, but he died the next day, the affidavit said. It was the third child McKinney has lost in as many years. Authorities said they would take a closer look at the death of McKinney's 16-day-old daughter in 2005, as well as a miscarriage in 2006. "We're going to open everything we know of back up and do more investigating, more interviewing," 9th Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said Wednesday during a news conference with Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon. "We can't jump to conclusions about the previous incidents because we don't know yet, but certainly it raises more red flags." Deputies responded to the home where McKinney was staying at the end of Cane Slash Road about 12:30 p.m. Monday after receiving a call about the child being unresponsive. McKinney told them she had been sleeping with her son, David, after leaving her job at a Hess gas station on Maybank Highway about 1 a.m., an incident report says. The report gives this account of what happened next: The mother went to bed about a half-hour later. She woke up about 7 a.m., fed David and went back to sleep. At 10 a.m., she woke up and fed the infant a second time, then went back to sleep. The third time she woke up — she couldn't remember the exact time — the child wasn't breathing. She had another person at the house call police. The Coroner's Office said David died at Medical University Hospital about 8:35 p.m. Tuesday. The cause of death was under investigation, Deputy Coroner Kelly Myers said. A man at the Cane Slash Road home declined to speak to a reporter about what happened but said McKinney hadn't lived there long. Deputies originally arrested the mother on a charge of unlawful neglect of a child, but upgraded it after the child died. Cannon said McKinney gave birth to David while in the Charleston County Detention Center. She had been arrested on an armed-robbery charge in North Charleston in March 2007. Wilson said the charge was dropped after a co-defendant exonerated her. A newborn girl, Mia, died under similar circumstances to David in July 2005. It happened at a home on Henry Tecklenburg Drive, according to an incident report. "It was determined that she had rolled over on the child during the night and the child suffocated," Cannon said. Wilson said an infant-fatality panel of medical and legal experts had looked into that death but found no basis for criminal charges. The miscarriage the following year happened while McKinney was about five months pregnant, the sheriff said. Investigators had not determined who was the father of any of the children, he said. Authorities don't think David's death was an accident, but they wouldn't say if they thought it was a case of neglect, abuse or an extreme lack of responsibility. Rollover deaths happen several times a year in Charleston, often to parents who are unaware of the dangers of sleeping with their infant, said Colleen Boylston with Sweetgrass Pediatrics in North Charleston. In the medical community, they call it co-sleeping. "We don't recommend co-sleeping at any age for safety concerns," Boylston said. Younger children run a greater risk, she said. The danger increases if the parent has been using alcohol, pain medication or illegal drugs, or is obese. "The key is teaching the child to sleep by itself in a safe environment," she said. Homicide by child abuse carries a sentence of 20 years to life. Charleston County Magistrate Mary Holmes read the charges against McKinney in court Wednesday night. When she asked McKinney if she would like to make a statement, McKinney said, "Can I plead guilty now?" The judge's answer was, "No." McKinney will later face a circuit court judge for a bond hearing. Nadine Parks contributed to this report. YOU THINK? 3 KIDS IN 3 YRS AND WE'RE JUST GONNA LOOK AT HER NOW??!

I have a hard time believing that you can "accidentally" roll on top of your child while you are sleeping and not realize what is going on long enough for the child to suffocate. I have 3 children, and they all slept with me at some point, and I NEVER rolled on top of them. Nice excuse....if you ask me it is a BS excuse. Something is wrong with this girl to have "accidentally" suffocated two of her children. Those kids didn't ask to be born.

She should be suffocated the same way she did her children. I'm sure some attorney will try to say she is suffering from some type of mental illness and this was not her fault. BS!!! She should have been looked into a long time ago. Death row for her.

Things like this make me wonder why these low class people can't be sterilized so they can't reproduce; they certainly don't need anymore chances to kill innocent children.

I know that accidents of this kind can happen, but twice? I had five children and I slept with them in my bed and never once rolled on top of them. So did my mother, my sisters, and my grandmothers. So, I agree that this is "BS".

Sickening, this should go with out saying but I hope she is never given the opportunity to become pregnant much less a parent again.

You would think that after the first time, she would have learned what a baby crib is. BTW, according to the timeline here, she left work at 0100am, slept from 0130am until 0700am, slept from then until 1000am, then slept for who knows (she doesn't) how long. Did she just come off a 24 hour shift or did she have help getting to sleep? Just wondering.

Sorry, but this woman has no maternal instincts whatsoever.
She is a murderer plain and simple. Did you see her on the news last night? She knew she had killed that child, and that is the one reason she wanted to go ahead and be sentenced.
My husband and I have had our babies in the bed with us many a night, and neither one of us ever came close to rolling on one of them. I think most parents have a built-in instinct not to do this.
I don't agree with co-sleeping being dangerous. Health experts have already said that there is less chance of SIDS when a baby sleeps against a parent.
If there is any problem with this at all is that it usually leads to spoiling the child where it won't sleep in it's own bed.
This woman either has the worst luck in the world(yeah right)or she is truly a total sociopath.

I hope she rots in jail and wish it was the good ole eye for eye tooth for tooth or the days where we could beat them in public... I dont like violence and am not a violent person,, but anyone that meeses with or hurts a child needs to be done that way.. .they are FU*&^%$ animals... An animal is better than that .

Working the night shift at a Hess gas station, apparently no husband or even a steady boyfriend, moving often, in trouble with the law and she still gets pregnant 3 times in 3 years??? Her first one apparently at 18 years of age???
Although it's a tragedy, I can "almost" understand one roll over suffication as an accident. I find it hard to believe you can roll over on even a new born baby and not realize it, but apparently, it happens fairly often. Once that happens, I can't imagine anyone ever putting a baby back in bed with them. This sounds like a case of "I got away with it last time".
Something is not right in this girl's mind. If it were truely an accident, she would not ever have asked to go ahead and plead guilty. She'll get a lawyer and they'll end up pleading not guilty for some lame reason or another. We'll be seeing this one on Court TV, well, now True TV.

There is truly a crime committed here. I have three children thats have slept in bed with me, on the couch, and on my chest and I have never rolled over on any of my kids or siblings for that matter.
She didn't wont those children, but she kept getting pregnant. She is definitely a case for spading.
I hope they throw the keys in the Cooper River on this one. Don't mess with kids. They did not ask to be brought into this world. People make that choice, so they should protect them.

White Trash druggie!!! What was she doing with the child if she committed armed robbery? Why was she sleeping with the children? Everyone and anyone in their right mind doesn't sleep with babies and/or children. Anyone that does it is irresponsible regardless of your social standing. For one, this kind of accident can and will happen and two if you start letting kids sleep in the bed with mom and dad, it leads to problems getting them to sleep in their on bed later. Also it strains the marriage. Children don't belong in the parents bed!!!

THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHY WE HAVE SO MANY CHILDREN IN THE CUSTODY OF THE STATE.I THINK A MANDATORY HYSTERECTOMY WOULD BE THE ANSWER IN THIS CASE. TO MANY FAMILIES OUT THERE THAT WOULD HAVE LOVED TO MAKE ONE OF THESE CHILDREN THEIR OWN AND GIVE THEM A LIFE, BUT INSTEAD THIS PIECE OF WHITE RASH TOOK THEIR LIVES AWAY. DEATH SENTENCE, BUT I AM SURE WE WILL HER THAT SHE WILL CLAIM TO HAVE HAD POST PARTPARTUM DEPRESSION AND GET OFF WITH A SLAP ON THE WRIST.

more proof that we need a national birth control program.
norplant or nuvo ring (spelling??) should be implanted/inserted starting at age 12 (they last for 3-5 years) then if the child is still deemed unable to make rational decisions(which no 17 year old is) it should be reimplanted/inserted and that way we have no teen pregnancies.
or dumbasses getting pregnant and killing the children they know they dont want. Idiots.

Yes, allwoman, ask my now grown children how crazy I am, right? Some people obviously have never been so exhausted that they fell asleep with a baby in their bed.
That's been some of the best sleep I've ever had.
This woman didn't accidently roll on these babies, she wanted them gone from her life.
Have any of you mothers that have posted EVER put a folded blanket over your baby's face because it was crying?
I bet none of you have, because we are not screwed up in the head like this woman.

I don't agree that people who sleep with their kids are irresponsible but there are cases where women have rolled on their kids while they were sleeping. It was by accident though. I am not saying this is the case either but just letting people know that it can happen. In fact, I am almost sure that doctors actually caution people from having babies sleep in the bed with them.
With that being said, 3 babies dying in 3 years??? Sorry, but that is no coincidence.

Well well ticket3477 I think that a boy should keep his little Willie in his pants then the girls would not need birth control. It takes two to make a baby so the boy needs to take some responsibility also. Your comment is an insult to all girls like it is their entire fault because they get pregnant. Like I said keep your little WILLIE in you pants and there will be no unwanted children.

Has anyone noticed that she only did 7 months for armed robbery? The Mt. P boys needed her public defender. If she did a sufficient sentence for that crime, this would never have happened.

"Munchausen by proxy is when a parent makes their child ill on a recurrent basis. This is child abuse. These infants will usually come to medical attention with the complaint of stopping breathing (apnea) with a color change. If this complaint from the parent is not taken seriously, the parent will often make the infant more ill before they see the doctor. Frequently, the infant is brought into the emergency room by ambulance after getting resuscitated by the paramedics. It is true that sometimes these babies do not survive the damage induced by the parent (usually only one parent is inducing the injury and the other is unaware). If there is no autopsy or death scene investigation, these infants can wrongly be labeled as SIDS. This is not often the case."
Probably not the case here; however,we all tend to look for explanations for the inexplicable, don't we? We just cannot comprehend such horrific actions.

Sad Sad Sad.
Allwoman- throw me on that list too. I slept with my kids on my chest, in the bed, on the floor, on the couch, on my back , foot in my butt, butt in my mouth and anything else you could think of. Never have I accidentally stepped on them, rolled over, or anything else. I think I can speak for alot of mothers and say its times when we fell asleep knowing our child is in the bed with us and woke up with back, neck pains because we did not move the whole night because, while we were sleeping, we still was aware of what was around us.
I find it quite ironic that she wants to go ahead and plead guilty NOW to homicide by child abuse. I think she is hiding something....

So youre saying we should give all boys vasectomy's and hope that later in life we can reattach the tubes and they can have kids?? Dumb, moronic, assinine, idiotic...STUPID.
The solution I had (and I am a girl, thankyouverymuch) is relatively non-invasive and doesnt require a major surgery. I am 25 and have had the sense to take birth control and not sleep around bc I dont want kids any time soon. Im sure you are aware that Birth control is readily available and cheap if you get it from the hospital but people are lazy, cheap, and stupid (they think the pull out method is fool proof) Boys dont have a sperm killer they can take, so stop it on one end. Dont be dumb. There are also alot of stupid young girls out there that try to get pregnant and have babies cos they want someone to love them. My solution prevents that from happening.
Before you shoot off at the mouth...you might want to make sure you get your information correct.

OK first of all the daddy of these 3 children is in SCDC for the next 15 for the armed robbery she was exhonerated on. If she did kill these children she needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law and if they can bring more charges on her for the other two then all the better but in all the comments i see no mention of the poor children being gone. 3 innocent lives taken, that is the tragedy. You know, this aggitates me to the fullest extent. That these youg women to have babies and don't even have enough responsibility to take care of their own children. This is the third child she has had that has died (including the miscarriage). It shouldn't take that many to start an investigation. When I first heard that this had hapened I immediatley went the internet to find archives showing what had happened to her first born little girl but was unsucessful. I did, however, find her myspace page. Being that I am young as well and a lot of people are using myspace I was pretty sure she would have one. I saw a picture of her first child and she is such an angel. I beleive that she needs to be locked up for the rest of her life.

Buttercup, just for the record, not all "willies" are little :)
Mandatory birth control is an idea I've spent a lot of time thinking about. It would be great if they did have a reliable birth control pill for men too, but as far as I know, they don't. Birth control pills don't stop STDs anyway, and I fear that many "on birth control" might become more casual with the rest of sex and then the cases of STDs, including Aids, will sky rocket.
Although mandatory birth control would solve several problems we now face, who would you trust to make the decisions on when someone can have a baby? I can't think of anyone or anything that currently exist that should have that authority... EXCEPT for a parent. We all know that not all parents are going to make the right decision in that area.
The only real viable solution is education, over many generations. No, it won't fix anything in the short term, but hopefully it would help in the long term.

You know i forgot to mention earlier that these poor innocent babies have done nothing wrong but yet are brought into this world because of irresponsible women that feel like they need to have unprotected sex because it's more pleasureable! i am a mother of 3 cute little boys. I am 28 years old but I have that motherly instinct that if my infant sleeps next to me in the bed I will not roll over onto that baby...that's just the intinct. However, the pediatrician is right about co-sleeping. Your child should sleep in thier own bed. Even if it's in your room, the child is right there at your finger tips.

So what every she thinks...is her opinion.
For this girl to kill her children, there could not be any bond here. And I bet she didn't know who these kids father were. I am sure all three had different fathers.

You can't force people to insert or implant things into their uteruses. That is ethically wrong. There needs to be some sort of prevention plan though. Abstinence is all they teach in school, which obviously doesn't work because either they are teaching BS (SC is second to last in education), or they are just don't care. Probably the latter excuse.
And for the record, not every teen that gets pregnant kills their babies. Some teens actually take responsibility for their actions and turn out to be great parents.
As for sleeping with kids in the bed;
It is not irrespobsible to have your kids sleep in the bed with you occasionally. Bad dreams happen. Scary noises happen. It just takes an idiot or a drug abuser to roll on top of them without knowing. That is a BS excuse and I hope they throw the whole encyclopedia set at her-not just the book.
**Nuva Ring: You
insert the ring in your vagina and leave it there for three weeks. After the ring is inserted, it releases a
continuous low dose of hormones into your body. You then remove it for a one-week ring-free period. [Now how can you expect 12 year olds to use this birth control correctly every month? Someone in my apartment complex flushed maxi pads down the toilet. If they aren't educated enough to know you can't flush pads, they won't be educated enough to know how this ring works and the risks].**
**Norplant: Wyeth, the maker of Norplant, recalled Norplant permanently because it could cause irregular and excessive bleeding, infection at the insertion site, capsule expulsion, migraine, and breast abnormalities. Other Norplant side effects include: nausea, dizziness, breast soreness, acne, weight gain, depression, skin discoloration, ovarian cysts, hair loss, and removal difficulties [so let's just force this on our teenage daughters too!]

Coldbeer - yes education is key. We brought it up on another board but you'd be surprised what old wives tales people still believe. I know it is a touchy subject but unless you are home-schooling your kids and they have NO access to the outside world and you have cameras monitoring them at all times.... you get the drift, they should be educated much earlier than high school. Late elementary school is probably good. Not full on details but most def the basics. In high school or late middle school the details should come into play. That sounds bad but seriously do not let your kids come out of school knowing absolutely nothing.
I can't speak for all women but I can say that 14 is when the propositions start and no it isn't all 14 year old boys doing it either. Luckily I was given information that scared the crap out of me so I didn't even try to contemplate it at a young age but that is not always the case.
Of course you have issues at hand as well. Women with daddy issues, girls who have been molested, girls who just want babies etc... The list goes on. I do agree that education will help.

Ticket,
Instead of a birth control pill, perhaps you need to take a CHILL pill, LOL. You are obviously taking this whole thing WAAAY too seriously. Take a deep breath, and just calm down....

This SHOULD be taken seroiously... an innocent child was murdered by his psychopath mother who obviously doesn't know when to quit having babies.
Posted by Two_Sheds on March 6, 2008 at 11:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Marianne, I did not mean that the ISSUE AT HAND should not be taken seriously---I was referring to Ticket's taking issue with something I said. If he/she didn't like it, then he/she needs to just move on and stop beating a dead horse!
BUT, back to the issue at hand....I thought that if you had a baby in prison, then it was put into the custody of a guardian. Why was the child returned to her? Was there no reliable way to prove that she was an unfit mother, such as a drug test?
Posted by Marianne0558 on March 6, 2008 at 11:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Do any of you even know how the system works?
They give the child to a relative then the relative almost ALWAYS gives the child back to the parent it was taken from. It's a vicious cycle. Then these innocent children learn these atrocious ways of "parenting" and this is how they end up raising their own kids.

Well, seeing as I don't have any experience in the world of felonies and convictions, I guess someone WILL have to explain the process to me.
If they can prove that the mother would be a danger to the child, isn't there some kind of restraining order (or something of the sort) that would prevent the mother from having custody? I'm really not sure how this works....

CONGRATULATIONS ALLWOMAN!!
When are you due?
Instead of trying to place people on birth control why don't we educate them about sex. I think Coldbeer hit it right on the dot. If you give these young kids birth control then they may start hopping on folks like rabbits...what about diseases and prevention?
Some parents don't even want to take their teen daughters to get the HPV shot so what makes you think people are going to have little girls standing in line for birth control? Besides that you do know that the norplant is not all that great? I know people that had to get it removed because they had bruises all over their body, constant headaches, and blood clots as well. Just imagine having all these little girls standing in line to get the norplant and 5 months down the line one of them die due to mandatory birth control law, do you realize how much trouble the state would be in? Besides that I don't want the government governing EVERYTHING because of a few bad apples out of the bunch. The governnment would have to test every single woman to see what birth control is compatible with their bodies.
We need to teach little girls to keep their trap doors closed and our little boys to keep their little willies in their pants. What was the word that folks use to use back in the day...oh yeah abstinence!!!!
You know what's also funny? On this board certain folks would like to put a number on the amount of kids people can have, but I would like to ask everyone on this board how many kids did your grandparents have?
Posted by Marianne0558 on March 6, 2008 at 11:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I don't have any experience in the world of felonies and convictions either, and definitely not any in child abuse/neglect, but:
Just because they place a restraining order or a protective order against the parent, doesn't mean said family members won't give the child to the parent anyway. I mean, it's not like these people are law-abiding citizens anyway.

Girleygirl,
You are absolutely right about teaching abstinence to our boys AND our girls. That is the ONLY surefire way to prevent pregnancies.

"You know what's also funny? On this board certain folks would like to put a number on the amount of kids people can have, but I would like to ask everyone on this board how many kids did your grandparents have?"
My grandparents had 2 kids-my father and his brother.
SNUB!!!

My grandparents had 10 kids. They loved everyone but I have the feeling that if birth control was available during their time they would not have had so many kids.
While I believe abstinence is the best method of preventing unwanted pregnancies and STIs, I do not think it is a realistic approach. In a perfect world you could tell kids to just say no and they would listen. We all now that that is not how the world works. Kids are having sex even though abstinence only is being taught in the schools (personally I think sex ed should be taught by parents but some parents apparently are not doing this). Education is key.
Posted by ColdBeer on March 6, 2008 at 11:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)
You really can't compare our grandparents situation to our situation though. They may have had 6,7 or even 8 kids often back then, but the world was different. Almost no one got divorced, very few women became pregnant out of wedlock, kids were almost always disciplined, the cost of living was cheaper and we were not faced with over population the way we are today.
Having kids is a wonderful experience. People just need to realize that they have to be in a position to properly provide for that kid, mentally, physically and financially, before they start having them. If you can provide for 8, have 8. If you can't provide for 1, don't have any.

This girl is obviously mental. You are right in assuming something else was going on other than what she stated. I don't think she would have pled guilty so fast either. As for young girls being sterilized...hey...make it a part of the regular shots that a child takes for females to get a five year birth control shot at age 10. If they come up with one for boys....do the same. When they have finished high school, then they can stop the shots. I would rather see girls take a shot rather than be sterilized. This crazy woman should be investigated and her case worker as well. Both should spend time behind bars and be labled the same as a child molester for the rest of her life.

I Understand that Coldbeer. The reason why I asked that very crazy question was to see if people feel the same way about their grandparents, or parents, or someone else's grandparents and parents. Who made up the rule that two kids are more than enough, and why were'nt my grandparents listening.....you see what I'm saying. You are right if you can take care of a sleuth of kids DO IT and kudos to you, if you can't take care of yourself don't have none. This aint China!!

Buttercup! Three cheers for you!!!!!!!! I read your comment and have to agree with you, it takes two to tango and two to produce a baby. *LOL*
Ticket3477…goodness, goodness…haven’t you gotten up on the wrong side of the bed today.
Re the statement…….. if the child is still deemed unable to make rational decisions(which no 17 year old is) it should be reimplanted/inserted and that way we have no teen pregnancies…..Who will be the one to decide this??? I don’t and have never been able to walk on water or part a sea, so it certainly won’t be me. *L*
It is not only some teens who are guilty of thinking with their hormones and not using common sense but also includes numerous older age groups as well who are guilty of doing the same. It is beyond of what should have or should not have been done to prevent this young female to be able to conceive. It is too late for her babies. They are gone. And she will do it again if she is not stopped NOW! I have adopted children and it breaks my heart that her babies meant so little to her.

My husband is a super heavy sleeper, and would probably not notice rolling over on our son. This may seem silly but I still check on him periodically, while he is sleeping, to make sure he is still breathing!!! It's a paranoia I have. Even his blanket is tucked under his mattress and doesn't come above his chest...

I propose a plan which would utilize some of our finest South Carolina born and bred government initiatives. We could use PACT test data to find out where the stupidest people live. Take some SC Education Lottery money (since it has done nothing to help schools anyhow) and open up abortion clinics in these neighborhoods.
You could even run a special. Bring in 50 losing lottery tickets, your EBT card and proof that you never even got a GED and it's all free!

Due to viagra and other helpful drugs did you all know that STDs for folks 50 and above is on the rise?
LowCountryMoose- that was funny about the lottery tickets and EBT, but folks already are using abortions as a form of birth control and that aint right. Don't get me wrong I am PRO CHOICE but I think its wrong for people to use abortion as a form of birth control.

You're right Girleygirl. Abortion should be a last resort. Maybe the government could implant some secret device, I'll call it NED, in convenience stores that could detect if you even have an EBT card. It would be installed at just below waist level. If males (they are worse culprits than women regarding unwanted pregnancies) had an EBT card and they tried to purchase lottery tickets, the NED would emit a powerful blast of society-saving energy. Hooray!
NED stands for Nut Elimination Device.

I agree with buttercup -
mandatory birth control is the worst idea I've ever heard. Birth Control isn't totally safe. There are health risks involved with birth control.
I will never take anything that plays with my body like that, and would move if mandatory birth control existed to some place where I was free to make my own choices. I wouldn't want any daughter of mine subjected to that.
I am a 28 year old female who has never been on birth control and I have never been pregnant. This has happened because I was lucky enough to get an education. Teach boys and girls about their bodies and how to take care of them and no one will need birth control.
She should be punished, but no one gender should have to pay for a those who have made the horrible mistakes.

KershawGirl, you are so right about the risks of birth control. I know a 24yr. old girl that recently suffered a stroke from the pill. It is terrible to be so young and be in rehab with elderly people trying to gain back your normal functions.
Lack of birth control was not this woman's problem. She is just deranged. Not all woman she be placed on B.C., just because there are a few psychos running around out there.
You have to have it in you to do this type of thing. There is no way to really predict who should have children and who should not.

Hey, LowcountryMoose, isn't a vasectomy a form of NED?
It does render "the boys" unfunctional, as they only can fire blanks. It leaves the bullets intact, but removes the gunpowder.

I am a "fitful" sleeper, so I never considered letting any of my boys sleep with me when they were babies. I watched a mother who went to Dr. Michael Baden because she had 4 children die. She firmly believed it was SIDS. The last two were twins, and they died on the same night...the connection other than them being siblings? She had them all in the bed with her. She was heavy, had been drinking on a couple of those occasions, and he let her know, without a doubt, that even having two die from SIDS is extraordinary, 3 or 4, impossible. I tell everyone...don't do it. One arm, the weight of a normal adults, across the chest of an infant, and they are unable to respirate. Crying to alert the parent would be impossible. It happens quickly, is unnecessary, and I would never judge a parent for making a baby sleep in a crib in Mommy/Daddy's room. As for this girl, I don't believe it was accidental. I believe some of the things I hear posted by people that have known her. She'll be unable to harm any more infants that don't ask to be born into that situation as she's looking at quite a few years. I would LOVE at times to have another baby, but it's impossible...and it breaks my heart to see mothers who consider theirs disposable.

Excuse me!!??!?!?!
Just because she is 21 does NOT mean she can't be a good mother. I had my daughter at 21 and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. I love her more than anything in this world, just as every mother should love their children. Being 21 has nothing to do with it.
