Talk about matchmaking! The collaboration between Charleston Stage and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra resulted in a triumphant production of "Fiddler on the Roof" Friday night at the Sottile Theatre. With a full complement of David Stahl's CSO adding that indefinable excitement of live performance, Julian Wiles' theater company staged a rousing success as well as a historic first. Actors' Equity member John O. Fennell starred as Tevye, that unforgettable Jewish milkman who talks to God and his wife in equal measure. Trying to uphold tradition against ever-encroaching changes, Tevye observes life as he participates in it in 1905 Russia. As tender as he is overbearing, Fennell nails this complex character and, directed by Marybeth Clark, is surrounded by talent. Golda is wonderfully played and sung by Susie Hallatt, while Terry Schildcrout steals every scene in which matchmaker Yente appears. Jan Gilbert plays daughter Tzeitel with as much grace as she shows comic timing when she plays Grandma. Resident acting company members add immeasurably to the professionalism of the production, especially Patrick Tierney as the dear, brave tailor Motel and Nicole Nicastro as Chava. Autumn Seavey is lovely daughter Hodel, determined to be with the rebellious Perchik (Charlie Retzlaff). As impressive as Musical Director Wendell Smith are Ralph Prentice Daniel as Yussel and the ensemble members who sustained a high level of animation. Authentic costuming, special lighting and exemplary singing and dancing make this show a joy.
