State's fledgling film industry has champion

The Post and Courier
Monday, June 30, 2008

— One of the state's first filmmakers to win a production grant explained Monday how the money helped serve as a springboard for his career.

Brad Jayne of West Ashley, creative director for Creative Forge Productions, a Daniel Island-based independent feature film production company, said the $100,000 awarded to him from the S.C. Film Commission was priceless.

Jayne used the money to make "Song of Pumpkin Brown," a 30-minute independent, narrative short film set in the early 1960s about a boy at Jenkins Orphanage. That film was entered in film festivals across the country, and took home some awards.

"Having the grant opened up a lot of doors," Jayne said.

He is working on two other films, which are helping to create a foundation for the state's efforts to establish the industry here.

Meanwhile, the state Department of Commerce has just announced the production of two new films to be shot in South Carolina.
