Jesse Meyers

To help

To provide information about the shooting, call Charleston police at 577-7434. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 554-1111 or www.5541111.com. Texters can send Crime Stoppers tips to CRIMES, or 274637, and mark the beginning of the message as "tip213."

Charleston police detectives think a second person was involved in last month's shooting death of Jesse Meyers on Lee Street but have had trouble turning up clues.

A teenager already has been arrested in the case.

Meyers, 23, likely had gone to the area on the upper end of the peninsula to visit friends, Detective Sgt. Michael Gordon said. While there on the night of May 11, two men with guns forced him to take off his clothes.

"At some point, he decided to run," Gordon said. "That's when the shooting started."

Gordon said Meyers headed toward some nearby apartments for help.

Police received an anonymous complaint about the shooting and found Meyers lying face down in an upstairs bedroom, according to previous reports. Authorities said he died at Medical University Hospital.

On May 16, police arrested Samuel Phillip Smiley of East Bay Street; he had turned 17 a few days earlier. They took him into custody at Murray Hill Academy.

Smiley remained at the Charleston County jail Friday, but Gordon said he had not cooperated with detectives.

Witnesses reported at least two people firing guns.

Meyers appeared to have been the intended target, Gordon said, because the gunmen never approached other people in the area: "We really don't know at this time what relationship, if any, he had with the people who shot him."

For now, detectives have little to go on, other than that they're probably looking for a male between the ages of 17 and 25.

Meyers lived with his parents in North Charleston and worked for a trucking company off Remount Road, the family said. He played in a basketball league on Charleston's East Side and was the father of a 2-year-old girl.

His death is one of six homicides in the city this year as of Friday. Two others remain unsolved: the June 14 shooting of Earl Rogers at America and Amherst streets and the Jan. 8 shooting of Omar Hamilton on Drake Street near Cooper Street.

ms_lady2u, your god is not the only one that can pass judgment. As a matter of fact, I've already passed judgment on him (or is your god a her? An it? I don't know you religious affiliation, so I won't make any assumptions that your beliefs are the same as mine) and deemed him/her/it not worthy of my time. You should have stuck with your first comment, stay on topic...

I've made this comment before - you are "judged" everyday of your lives. You are judged by your performance in school, your job, when you go to make a purchase you are judged by your credit history, etc. My mother used to drum this saying in my head "you are judged by the company you keep". The fear of being judged a useless human being keeps me from doing unspeakable acts. (as well as the punishment). So go ahead and judge me as a person. I lead my life everyday the way I would like to be judged.
