Tiger Toes, Chief Rusty and Quantico

Sporting notes compiled while counting the toes on Clemson's Tiger paw:

--Tiger Woods has stress fractures in his left leg. We all know what would happen to him if he were a thoroughbred racehorse.

--Some golf fans with tickets to the 2008 Ryder Cup in Louisville want their money back because Tiger Woods has pulled out for the season. Now they know how Family Circle tennis fans feel when the top seeds withdraw.

--Charlie Hawkins, wife of USC's legendary running back Alex Hawkins, recently exclaimed that she was tired of seeing all those "Tiger Toes" on cars driven by Clemson fans.

--Jane Brewer of Walterboro, in addition to her duties as associate dean for academic affairs at USC-Salkehatchie, has been named athletic director for the two-year school, making her one of only two female college ADs in the state. The other is Kim Abbott of USC-Beaufort.

Two Terps

--What about that other college baseball job? Not much attention is being paid to the opening at Charleston Southern since coach Jason Murray resigned earlier this month.

--What are the odds that the College of Charleston and The Citadel would hire new athletic directors within a year and both came from the University of Maryland?

--Charleston Southern's basketball team will play early-season road games this season at Iowa, at Cincinnati and at Florida State before hosting Virginia Tech at the North Charleston Coliseum on Dec. 29.

--Ed Dear of Seabrook Island recently hosted a group of "Quantico Marine Athletes" at Patriots Point. These guys not only fought for our country, they played football for our country as well. One notable name in attendance was King Dixon, former running back and athletic director at USC.

Formerly speaking

--Former College of Charleston baseball coach John Pawlowski's new job at Auburn won't take him much farther away from his 13-year-old daughter Mary-Louise, who is successfully battling cancer in North Augusta. The trip from Charleston was 184 miles. From Auburn it's 214 miles.

--Former Charleston Fire Chief Rusty Thomas has been asked to throw some batting practice next week for the Charleston RiverDogs.

--Stan Hurteau, after 17 years as the executive director of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, will retire Monday.

--The ever-so-popular Fred Daniels, who has served in various administrative and athletic roles for more than 40 years at the College of Charleston, retired last week.

--Former College of Charleston athletic director Jerry Baker has taken a temporary position with his former archrival, working with The Citadel Foundation on club seating and suites at the revitalized Johnson Hagood Stadium.
