The Post and Courier turns a new page this week, as Editor Barbara Williams retires after 44 years with the newspaper and Charles R. Rowe assumes her duties as editorial page editor. Williams' title will change to editor emeritus, and she will remain involved writing a weekly column. Her retirement marks a milestone in a groundbreaking career that included being the first woman assigned to cover the South Carolina Legislature and to serve as editor of a daily newspaper in the state. Ivan V. "Andy" Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Evening Post Publishing, said that during Williams' 44 years in Charleston, "Barbara has done just about every newsroom job there is from reporter to top editor. Her impact on our newspaper and our community cannot be overstated." Anderson said Williams will continue to serve as a consultant as well as a columnist. Rowe, currently the newspaper's assistant editor, will assume his new role Tuesday, and he vowed to continue to provide fair-minded opinion on the editorial pages and to maintain an emphasis on growth management, land conservation and governmental accountability. In my opinion, one of the primary reasons this state remains in such a pathetic condition can be attributed to the management and editorial staff of The Post and Courier. For decades, you have not only looked away but have actually applauded those responsible for the wholesale squandering of billions of South Carolina taxpayers’ dollars. The State Ports Authority and Hunley Commission serve as prime examples.
In my opinion, newspaper managers and editors that demonstrate such a callous lack of fortitude and editorial integrity should be fired not lauded.
