Charleston police seek second suspect in Mother's Day slaying

The Post and Courier
Saturday, June 28, 2008

Charleston police detectives think a second person was involved in last month's shooting death of Jesse Meyers on Lee Street in addition to a teenager already arrested, but they have had trouble turning up clues.

Meyers, 23, had likely gone to the area on the upper end of peninsula to visit people he knows, Detective Sgt. Michael Gordon said. While he was there, on the night of May 11, two men with guns forced him to take off his clothes.

"At some point, he decided to run," Gordon said. "That's when the shooting started."

Meyers headed toward some nearby apartments for help, the detective said.

On May 16, police arrested Samuel Phillip Smiley of East Bay Street, who had just turned 17 a few days earlier. They took him into custody at Murray Hill Academy.

Witnesses described two people firing guns, leaving at least one other suspect unaccounted for.

For now, detectives have little to go on, other than that they're probably looking for a male who is between the ages of 17 and 25.
