WATCHDOG INVESTIGATES: Dock roof permits

A James Island resident e-mailed Watchdog to protest a decision by S.C. Ocean and Coastal Resource Management granting a permit for a dock roof to be built in Charleston Harbor near the James Island Yacht Club off Clearwater Drive.
As a rule, OCRM has denied dock roof requests along that stretch of water with its views of the bridge, the peninsula and White Point Gardens.
But OCRM communications director Dan Burger said there’s a precedent for the permit. A dock nearby also has a roof. That roofed dock dates to 1988, before regulation restricting dock roofs went into effect.
“Since 1993, dock roofs have been permitted on a case by case basis, based in part on the presence of other docks with similar roofs in the area,” Burger wrote in an e-mail explanation to Watchdog.
