Charges in killing dropped
Prosecutor says Morosi acted in self-defense

Morosi
When a knife-carrying, 270-pound Jason Truitt came charging at 108-pound Stephanie Morosi, "he looked crazy," she told investigators. "His eyes were wild." So she did the only thing she could think of: She grabbed her .357-caliber handgun and fired at the man who'd once been her housemate. On Tuesday, roughly 20 months after Morosi admitted to shooting Truitt dead in her College Park bedroom, prosecutors abruptly announced they were dropping the murder charge against the female escort. Self-defense, they proclaimed. The woman's legal team said "a great weight" had been lifted by the decision. Morosi, 32, had been scheduled to go on trial this week at the Berkeley County Courthouse. She cannot be prosecuted again for this shooting. In a statement announcing the murder charge dismissal, 9th Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said the facts point to Morosi being in fear for her life when Truitt came at her in September 2006. "There is no evidence to disprove Morosi's account of the shooting," the statement also said. According to Wilson's report, Morosi had known Truitt for about five years and had let him move into her brick ranch house in the College Park neighborhood of Ladson. But after several months, he moved out. Morosi had also begun eviction proceedings. Morosi and others also said Truitt was in a dangerous pattern of depression, including suicidal and homicidal thoughts. According to Wilson, on the day he was killed, Truitt came at Morosi armed with two knives, including a hunting knife on his belt. "She ran to her bedroom and tried to close the door but he forced it open," Wilson's narrative said. "Truitt came at her yelling and screaming, so Morosi grabbed her gun, which was hidden in a bed pillow," it continued. "She believed that he was going to kill her and, in response, she shot Truitt three times while the gun was still wrapped in the pillow." Morosi bought the pistol months before at a local gun shop. Morosi also indicated that Truitt had been physically violent with her at least once before, Wilson said. She also had researched ways to get help, including attending criminal domestic violence workshops at My Sister's House, Wilson reported. Wilson did not return a phone call seeking comment. But Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt said Tuesday he supported the decision to drop the murder charge and the prosecution's finding of self-defense. The case had been scheduled for trial this week after Morosi's defense lawyer in March asked for a "date-certain" trial time. Officials, however, indicated last week the case likely would not be called. Wilson's statement also listed various avenues of legal defense Morosi's actions fell under, including the "Castle Doctrine," which outlines the right to ensure someone's own safety at home by using deadly force to prevent death or great bodily injury. Morosi's attorney said Tuesday the decision to drop the case was the correct one, saying the woman remains traumatized by what happened inside her home. "This was someone that she cared about," defense attorney Paul Thurmond said. At the time of her arrest, Morosi reportedly used the Internet to run a discreet, high-priced escort service out of her home. She required a "donation" of $250 an hour to be collected at the "beginning of the date, so just hand it over," according to her Web posting offering companionship. Morosi had been free on bond in the case since December 2006. Reach Schuyler Kropf at skropf@postandcourier.com or 937-5551.

Why did it take 18 months to "decide" that they would believe Morosi's version of the story? What changed?
It seems that they have the same set of facts that they had, or should have had, 18 months ago when she was charged with murder, so why was she charged in the 1st place?

The Judges Order forced the solicitors office to drop the charges. Otherwise, Wilson's office would have never done any such thing.
All this time gone past and Wilson sat on the case and did nothing.

The shooting death of Jason Maxwell Truitt was the eleventh (11th) Berkeley County homicide case reported for the year 2006 and four (4) more homicide cases were reported before the end of the year.
If one includes Charleston County a total of sixty six (66) homicide cases occurred in the Ninth Judicial Circuit in 2006.
http://archives.postandcourier.com/archi...
Berkeley County Law Enforcement and the Solicitor’s Office are complimented for not rushing to judgment on any unsupported allegations of Morosi without doing a full investigation—a matter which of course (duh) takes some time.

I am far more interested in why in the hell Charleston County Family Court felt it was necessary to jail a quadriplegic, Dannie Johnson, Jr., on failure to pay child support—a clearly improper jailing which threw him into direct contact with his later murderer.
Dannie’s homicide occurred on August 24, 2006.
Now there’s a question of far more public concern than Madame Morosi which bloody well needs to be addressed.

Thomas1776 is mistaken in his comment. The judge ordered that the case be called to trial, not dropped.
I have never seen anyone care so little about being accurate with comments. Wait, I get it! He is just "baiting" us so that we will respond.

Six Hundreds days (600) is more than ample time to have investigated this very simple case.
Tulane. Go back and read the previous story reported in the P&C. The Judges Order forced the solicitors hand. If the solicitor was not prepared for trial, the court was going to dismiss the case this week. Wilson sat on this case for way to long. So the thing Wilson did to save face was to drop the charge.

Of course a proper investigation takes time.
Seems most of the investigation should have occurred prior to arresting Morosi for MURDER. After all, the "Castle Doctrine" isn't exactly a new defense, & from the beginning Morosi claimed she acted in self defense.
I wonder how much time it took to verify that she took a domestic violence workshop? How much time did it take to interview a few people who had knowledge of the parties & situation? BTW, what a novel concept--interviewing 3rd party "witnesses".
"the facts point to Morosi being in fear for her life..."
"Morosi and others...said Truitt was in a dangerous pattern of depression, including suicidal and homicidal thoughts."
Well now, it is oh-so-interesting that the solicitor's office even knows about the opinions & observations of people who knew the parties involved & refers to them as "facts" to support an action in this case.
I suppose that means they actually did do some sort of investigation into this case.
Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that Morosi has a high profile defense attorney, who just happens to be a former GOP solicitor?
"There is no evidence to disprove Morosi's account of the shooting," ...this is interesting.
I have seen this line(the all inclusive & definitive "NO EVIDENCE") used when there is an abundance of verifiable facts to support the commission of a crime.
There is a case(yes-I am mentioning it again-because it is so outrageous) where
*the female victim, who has never done anything even questionably criminal, fears for her safety & life,
*took proper steps to make this known(order of protection)
*has much evidence(including readily available police records of domestic violence calls) that there was an existing pattern of abusive behavior by the offender
*has, in addition to several 3rd party witnesses, 'official' eyewitnesses-3 different sheriff's deputies-to stalking & violation of the order of protection
& yet the solicitor's office stated that they determined there was NO EVIDENCE of stalking & that the offender's behavior was merely annoying. I remain curious as to how they determined this without doing an investigation.

I don't feel like repeating what I said about this last night, but I looked up Truitt's record, and he only had a vehicle violation. I was surprised not to find anything about past arrests for assault, since he has been portrayed as such a violent person and woman beater.
As I said last night, time has a way of taking care of things.
Ms. Morosi, aka, stephaniem, will get hers one day, as she is not the poor, little, defenseless female that she would like people to believe.

Hey Lucy! I'm wondering if she knew that her housemate had issues, why did she have him live with her, or why did she even allow him to stay with her after the first domestic incident? And if she was making so much money, why did she need a housemate in the first place? *shrug* Just a couple of thoughts.

Since when did quadriplegics become immune to child support laws. If this person is a quadriplegic they should have been on disability and which means that child should have also gotten a check from the Social Security Administration (SSA). Was not this reported to the SSA? If not then who's fault is it? It would be Dannie Johnson Jr.'s fault.
I'm sure the mother who is struggling to raise the child or children on her own may not have been fairing as well as Mr. Johnson. It would not be right for the citizens of SC to be paying for his children. That's his duty. It's a tragedy that he died but if he would have been fulfilling his duty as responsible father his life might have been spared.

A case of self defense can be determined long before you hit the two-year mark. The man she shot didn't develop a criminal background after he died, so it was there from the start. I see this case as nothing more than a Solicitor bent on proving a murder that never happened, but was instead a case of self defense.
Don't sweat it, Wilson. Smoke another one, you'll be alright.

Tammie- those are very good questions that you bring up. I certainly would not have allowed him back into my home after the first incident, but, of course, I wouldn't have ever put myself in her postion in the first place. I guess she wasn't making as much money as she said she did. Aww.

Were the knives that he was allegedly armed with by his body? As far as having a knife on his belt, many men carry knives on their belts around here.
Like you said, it is her word against his, and he isn't here to defend himself.
After reading all of her past posts, one would definitely see that she is not a mentally stable person, nor does she present a person of good character.

She admitted in past posts about living with abusive men.
She claimed to be running an escort service to take care of a mother with cancer. The mother died in 2002.
4 yrs. later she is still in the business? Just too many inconsistencies in her life story.
A very confusing and questionable situation.

drp, please tell me you were being sarcastic. Fine looking woman? Gross.
The sad thing about this story is not only does a murderer walk free, but somehow the fact that she's a prostitute just seems to disappear. Perhaps she just wasn't making enough money to warrant a prostitution charge. (hahah) More than likely, this was magically forgotten about.
Like in NJ, ex-gov Spitzer goes down and the whole case seems to revolve around his use of a high-priced whore. Instead of any kind of charges being filed against the whore (I'm sure she knows prostitution is illegal), there's all this talk about how she's an aspiring singer blah blah blah. I can see it now. "I shot to stardom, and all I had to do was get paid to have sex."
You can cross out appearance as being the reason behind this. This skank is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ugly whereas the NJ whore is pretty damn hot.

RTC and all, if she had a history of living with abusive men could it be possible that this one was abusive too? Maybe he was abusive or showing signs of becoming abusive towards her and she was prepared? Many women of domestic violence never report anything until the abuse becomes extreme or they just end up dead.
I am grasping at straws too. The scenarios are endless with only one witness. And she does not seem to be of "good, moral character" at best.

Early, my thoughts exactly!! Sounds like this woman had a well thought out premeditated plan of action. Since when is it legal to run an escort service out of your home? $250.00 an hour "donations"...that must be her loop hole. I wonder if she has reported her earnings to the IRS. I don't think any woman who says she is an escort expects one to honestly believe that she doesn't sleep with these men whom she accompanies. That is totally bogus. What stupid man would pay that for that when the world is full of bars with women giving it out for free?? Must be into some real kinky stuff. GEE, and all this right in College Park. I wonder how far from the College Park Elementary school this woman's house actually is.
If you exercise your second amendment rights, and kill someone in your home, its your word against a dead person. Go figure...this sounds more and more like she had planned her actions since the first time she joined that support group because she knew their wouldn't be any witnesses when she completed her tasks, other than how helpless she was and how she tried to get so much help...and all the time she admitted that this person had problems mentally and let him MOVE IN WITH HER yet, there is not any convictions of CDV at all on this man. NOT ONE! I suspect a romantic involvement with this man, and his living and watching her "escorting" was driving him insane and that is why she evicted him when she didn't need him any longer.
The people defending her actions MUST be on her client list.
Posted by greyrider on June 25, 2008 at 9:17 a.m. (Suggest removal)
She may have bought the gun just prior to this because the danger in the situation was escalating. Newt, I've always been the one to side with the woman in these situations. Gun-toting women aren't all that common (except the few women hunters out there). And ones that actually shoot at people are even fewer. Maybe her "issues" are the result of being abused.

RTC-good point on Truit's record.
Of course, one can be dangerous without an arrest history indicating so, but the lack of a record for assault, physical violence etc. is an important piece of evidence to be considered.
Further, Morosi could have taken a domestic violence workshop for another reason aside from dealing with Truit. The fact that she, in her "line of work", took such a workshop, does not necessarily indicate that it was in reaction to a specfic situation. Perhaps she took it as part of her "job training".

if they feel like they don't have a good case against Morosi, why waste time and tax dollars on a trial.
So for the area, if you commit any crime just be sure you build yourself some nice loop holes in it and you won't worry about going to trial, so we can save tax dollars?
Now that's an interesting twist~ good cases or ples we take to trial, iffy cases, well we don't want to waste the tax payers money now do we ya'll?
Although, we do know that theory backfired with the recent mistrials and the 25 minute not guilty of murder decisions!

I'm still trying to figure out why after the first incident, she let him stay? Did he not have other family or friends? *shrug* I'm not picking her apart but I'm just curious. grey - yep, a lot of women who pursue the “oldest” profession have experienced abuse prior to their becoming prostitutes and most will continue to experience abuse because of their profession.
My bad about the male statements, cause some of the females on these posts are extreme to the highest point! Women tend to not have any compassion when the see another woman that made stupid choices and put themselves in harm way (which prostitution always does). Their normal nurturing state morphs into hyper-critical to the point of hysteria.

I feel bad for prostitutes. You have to have an incredibly low self-esteem to treat yourself that way. Same goes for women that sleep around. Perhaps Truitt was blackmailing Morosi. He may have known something about her that he was holding over her head and had threatened to go to authorities. This may have driven her over the edge.
Given light that she was running an escort service, she could have had him 'dress up' for her for some kinky role play...thus, the knives (premeditated). I know...women are usually the ones to play dress up, ie., nurse, Little Bo Peep...lol. Afterall she was a 'sweet thang' !
I suppose she could have been acting in self-defense. No one will ever know this because Truitt is no longer around to tell his side of the story.
I do agree, however, that this harlot is one scary looking woman.

Unfortunately women of domestic violence do not always leave alive. They don't always report their abusers either. You know, I hit a door, I fell down, ....All of the stories and so-called statistics say they stay and think the men will change when they say sorry. I know someone right now who married the guy even after he roughed her up a little bit. It is a pattern with her.
Don't know if this woman was being abused or not but it is always a possibility. It's also a possibility she just wanted to kill him. Who knows????
Posted by Newt on June 25, 2008 at 10:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Grey – I agree! Unfortunately not a few women associate sex with love and continually search out the “knight in shining armor”. Then they find out he is a user and they start a downward spiral of self hate and manic”this will be the one, he will truly love me”. Then the loop keeps looping and the self hate becomes part of the person.
Prostitution can be even more insidious….the money can become all consuming. Drugs play a large part in prostitution for self-medicating to make life bearable.
Yet, I will say that prostitution should be legal to assure the health of johns and prostitute and to cut down on abuse and underage prostitution.

I also love the fact that a lot of the comments are making fun of her situation and a man’s death! Most of the posters are ones that scream about pro-life and Christian beliefs, but a hooker that kills her john is funny………?

Newt, my spaghetti loving friend, I'd like to think we all sympathize definitely with the victim. His death was senseless. A lot of us have a lot of theories, which are pretty good. I dont think what she did was funny at all, just a lot of unanswered questions as to why this all happened. JMO Enjoy your spaghetti my friend. :-)

Lillycollette,
I wasn't here in 2006 and only the latter part of 2007. Thanks for posting that link. It's very thought provoking. Just looking at the list really made me think--most of the victims were young and the offenders were young, as well (Younger than I realized anyway).

I don't think this is funny at all. IMHO, this is a blatant disregard for the justice system. I'm inclined to agree with Early. Her story is packed full of bs.

I have to add more to that comment, pardon me.
I was surprised by the number of young people who were murdered here in the lowcountry. Not that I anticipated that murder victims would be old, but I was shocked that there were so many victims under the age of say, 25.
I also realized how many of our local murders involved family members; i.e, children of the victims, spouses, etc.
I am also interested in knowing how many of those with "no suspect" ended up being solved.

Sounds like justice is served to me ... Case Closed. Regardless of her past actions, if he was intending bodily harm in her house she was justified. But I can see a hard case, since it is only her word.

IF he really was abusive, and she acted in self defense because she truly feared for her life....then I would have done the same thing if I were in her shoes. HOWEVER, as mentally unstable as she obviously was, who can honestly believe her story? Like Early said, how on earth could she have run into that room and had time to reach under a pillow, grab a gun, take aim and fire, but not have 2 seconds to slam the door shut behind her??? Just doesn't add up.
Thank God I have never been in an abusive relationship. I have no clue how I would react. It's easy to say why don't you just leave, but I suppose it's totally different if you are living like that and lack the confidence and self esteem to remove yourself from that kind of life.

Dear crew and others:
After viewing comments the gals have left regarding allwoman's suspention you seem to continually make excuses and and say she was removed for "off topic" comments. Actually she was banned because her's and other's "off topic" comments were XXX in nature. Grannyofsex, I mean grannyofsix, finally got it right when she suggested that you find another site to "have fun" - its too bad things got to this point before this was realized.
The fact is that this is a public site that people's kids and grandkids visit. There is no disclaimer that this is an adult site with graphic adult content and beleive it or not, some folks even, get this - come to talk about news and local events.
Grannyofsex, I mean, grannyofsix - you should know better than anyone; would you want your grandkids reading some of the junk you and the gals have posted? Everyone's comments are available to view - why don't you peruse through some of yours and see if you'd like to read them to your grandkids?
Because of my actions in contacting a moderator to view the threads, I was booted as well for my vulgar and hateful comments - I was pretty sure this would happen as my words spoke for themselves just as your posts spoke for themselves. I am actually sorry and ashamed for some of the stuff I posted in anger and would hope to God no one's kids or grandkids read them -- I suppose I'm the only one since you all feel you did nothing wrong to begin with evidently.
Once my suspention is over I may come back to comment, but if I do I will watch what I say and always remember this is a public site with rules and choose my words more carefully.
So keep on thinking you did nothing wrong by hijacking nearly every forum you were on by posting your personal XXX thoughts and stories. Again, it was not just "off topic" comments that got folks banned, it was the content of those "off topic" comments - try to remember that.
It does look like since allwoman is allgone the XXX content has toned way, way down which is a good thing. Again, I am ashamed of some of the comments I made in anger and apologize, but I just couldn't get the point across to you all that the P&C site is a news site, not your personal sex blog and that peoples kids and grandkids have read your comments - maybe your own kids and grandkids. Several commenter have agreed with me and thanked me for stopping your nonsense.
If you want to discuss XXX topics using sexually explicit language, there are literally hundreds of websites designed just for that - unfortuneately the P&C website is not one. I love sex and sexuality, but just because I love sex doesn't mean I think its ok to screw in the middle of WalMart.
Have a good day.
Jonsey

While I agree with some of what Jonsey has said, I think the rules should be no different than what you would here on the John Boy and Billy show, the Imus show or even the Howard Stern show. I didn't see where it crossed that line but I left fairly EARLY. I doubt few kids read the comments section and if they are computer literate, I believe they are flooded with much more expressive information than the post here.

Hey MissPriss.....it has nothing to do with the comments you made because since the PC started letting people post, not everyone stays on topic. From what I know it was due to someone posting "shut down the board again."

Early- I wonder if dude knew she had a gun in her pillowcase. Then he is pretty stupid for running behind someone he knew that had a gun, or better yet he was trying to catch her before she grabbed the gun. I don't know. I think the only mistake jonsey made was not naming Stephanie Morosi the leader of the "hooker crew". After all she earned that spot, the hardway. I think Stephanie explained why her mug shot was not so glamerous and why she looked wacked out. I would put her posts out there with Elisebth's. I only hope anyone posting here would find themselves in a situation where they needed to use deadly force to protect themselves from an unwanted house guess. Was their not a situation a few months back when a guy that was staying at house starting abusing his GF, got thrown out, broke back in minutes later and was shot and killed?

You made a good point about the logistics behind the whole event. Seriously, who would have time to do all that she was able to do with her abuser in hot persuit like that? If it was self-defense, good for her. If it was murder, then she will have to deal with that for the rest of her days.

Chiming in on another poster's question which went something like "Does it seem that a lot of people committing crimes are getting off with no consequences?"
Well, it does seem that many cases involving acts of violence against another person & other behaviors which often precede violence(yes, I mean stalking) are not getting the care & attention they should get.
I would like to trust that cases are handled with an eye for justice & the truth. However, it does seem that more & more, the prosecutors are handling cases based on a guess about which way a jury will go--in a way taking over the function of a jury.
In reference to the man who killed his wife & kids-he is not going to be allowed to go free. There is a "little" point of law which requires that a person be mentally competent to stand trial..just in case he/she wants to exercise his/her constitutional right to testify on his/her own behalf.
We have the right not to incriminate ourselves, but we also have the right to participate in our own defense.
We can't even execute a person who was sane & competent at trial & sentencing but becomes incompetent or insane while on death row.
