CLEMSON — DeAndre McDaniel's future in a Clemson uniform is in doubt after his weekend arrest on charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. McDaniel, a promising defensive back who played last season as a freshman, was arrested Saturday after an incident with his girlfriend at his off-campus apartment in Central. According to an incident report provided by the Central Police Department, McDaniel choked his girlfriend, struck her in the face, head and chest with a closed fist, and pushed her down a flight of stairs. The report said McDaniel's girlfriend suffered serious bodily injury, including a cervical sprain, soft tissue contusion, facial and chest contusions, and a neck sprain. She was treated at Oconee Memorial Hospital, according to the report. McDaniel, who played in all 13 games last season while totaling 33 tackles, was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond. The charge is a misdemeanor, with a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. The female's name was not included in the report. The dispute began when McDaniel's girlfriend "asked him about him exchanging his phone number with another female at a club earlier," the report stated. McDaniel's girlfriend claimed he choked her "while jerking her head up and down," then struck her in the face and head with a closed fist. The report did not name the woman, who is 19 years old, 5-1 and 107 pounds. The 20-year-old McDaniel is 6-1 and 210 pounds. Tigers coach Tommy Bowden said through a team spokesman that he's aware of the situation and is gathering facts. McDaniel figured to be a key player on Clemson's defense this season. The Tigers are short of experience at linebacker, where McDaniel saw time during the spring. Clemson's secondary also lacks depth behind starting safeties Michael Hamlin and Chris Clemons. McDaniel was a high-profile high school player in Tallahassee, Fla. He originally signed with Clemson in 2006 but did not qualify and attended Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. It's incredible that this is only a misdemeaner. Anyway, get rid of him and lock him up. I am sick of these hoods masquarading as student athletes at my school. How about a little character check before signing these people up?

A Clemson player in trouble and it's actually being reported? This can't be!
LOL--Bowden gathering facts? He should read this article--plenty of them here.
Hope the young woman is OK. Of course, IPTAY will "talk" her into dropping the charges.

10+ years for a misdemeanor? Wow.
I don't see how McDaniel will remain on the team after this. I definitely don't see him making it to fall practice. But we'll have to let the legal system do its thing first I guess.

Another career thrown away because of......what? Bad parenting? Bad choise? Heat of the moment? I don't know if there is one answer that will fit, but a combination of factors. The biggest that I feel is a lack of roll models or should I say GOOD roll models! We see the bad ones all the time, T O and PACMAN all the cool names and the fame to go with it and the criminal records as well. There is enough blame to go around for sure, but WHO is going to be the one to step up and try and put a stop to it. First(sadly which will never change is the favor we show sports talent, and the value we place on it above all else....ethics, grades, character, morals, spiritual relationship and family values and relationships. Is it too late? I think...YES. We have as a nation set aside all things that matter as family for things that relate to 'How much will I make, what can I get, How soon can I retire and do nothing. Sure I see some of the big money people do all the charity work and give $$$$ but not from the heart...it has more to do with a tax shelter or benifet. The soul of America has been sold to the highest bidder and even sader alot of churchs have gone to the highest book and trinket sales.....He is coming back! Are YOU ready. Will you ashamed, humble or indefferent? Or....on your knees in praise?

"Of course, IPTAY will "talk" her into dropping the charges." A typically classless comment from an exceedingly classless group of fans whom I trust do not represent the entire gamecock club...........uh, following in the same classless form, any truth to the rumor that spurrier has already contacted McDaniel about transferring?? Not only would McDaniel's arrest record fit right in with the program, but he'd be one of the best players on the gamecock team.
In a more serious and realistic vein,I sincerely hope the young victim of this crime recovers from wounds both physical and psychological. And I also hope Mr. McDaniel completes his education....albeit at another location (assuming all the fact thus reported are accurate).

Hold that Tiger, hold that Tiger....
whatever...sadly, it's nothing new and not really news anymore that kids are making bad choices due to all sorts of things....lack of parenting (jerryt) and poor assimilation into college life/civilized world....

By reading these comments, I guess he has already been convicted of this crime. Just like the Duke lacrosse players were guilty....oh wait. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? If its true, then he should be kicked out of school, but perhaps we should let him defend himself first...just a thought though.

ashleyriver , that was touching! All gamecock fans are now classless. A tiger player chokes, beats ,and pushes her down the stairs . Yep , that makes gamecocks classless.
When c. vincent got his dui , the tiger nation blamed the highway patrol . Then we learned he had assaulted his girlfriend. Yep more classless gamecocks .
The brawl at the ymca is another "classless gamecock subject". Tell us what you know about it. It took TWO years for the truth too come out about it.
Ashley, I do understand your pain. when brad scott was at sc i wanted to believe he ran a clean christian program . When he left , the truth was revealed. the truth will be revealed when tommy leaves.

Oh he's innocent -- she just fell down the stairs. You can add up all the gamecocks' minor arrests in the last 5 years and they don't come close to this assault on a female or even the DUI by the other bum. You tiggers are hypocrits--you throw rocks from a glass house and have your own problems as do all teams. Danny Ford would be proud -- looks like the thugs have been protected by Iptay for far too long. Where are you now BigRiver -- don't let your babies grow up to be tigers, right. And ashley river, you are a moron--way to spin it but no one buys it--he's your player, moron.

Sounds like this young man needs to go out to the curb in front of his apartment on Sunday and wait for the Clemson Student van (at taxpayers cost) and pick him up and take him to Tommy's choice of house of worship. He ain't spiritual enough!!

kick him off the team!!! we don't need this garbge at clemson. Bowden needs to go too. I have said this from day one.

Gadsden -- that is touching commentary. You have researched it well and are obvioulsy unbiased. I have never seen a drunk or obnoxious tigger fan in overalls, they just don't exist. Clemson is the jewel of goodness, blah, blah, blah. I guess when you play in the All Cupcake Conference, you can't expect the fans to do too much but eat cheese and drink wine; except for most tigger fans, we all know they are exceptionally red and rude. Those orange overalls say it all--leave the cowtipping and goat sex out of it, just those overalls tells me all I need to know about tigger fans on gameday.

Just a quick true story for all my fellow Gamecock fans out there:
After the USC-Clemson game in 2005 (I believe that was the year...it was in Columbia), I was packing up the tailgate with my friends when some Clemson fans decided to talk trash. One of them got hostile and busted my friend's eye for defending the Gamecocks.
That is when my other friend, who is 6 foot 3, stepped up and broke his hand. On the Clemson fan's face.
He could not have been prouder to wear that cast for the next 4 weeks.
What does this have to do with the Clemson douchebag in the article? Not a whole lot of anything. But at least it was guys getting into it, and defenseless women were left out of it.

Wow, why are so many athletes abusive towards women? Don't they work out their frustrations on the field?
It really is a shame that so many of them get free rides to college and then blow it because of their behavior.
Throw them all out. There are too many kids that would love to go to college but don't have the athletic abilities to get a scholarship. All brawn and no brains.

Gadsden,
Good job bringing up the winless season. That is recent news. Oh, wait - no, that was 9 years ago. That's right - it was back in the 1900's. Since then, has USC lost games? Of course. But who have they beaten? Let's get a roll call:
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Clemson
Ohio State (back-to-back in bowl games)
Houston (another bowl win)
So since 1999, USC has beaten the elite of the SEC, has beaten your beloved Tigers, and has notched 3 bowl wins. Like I said, they certainly have lost their share of games since 1999, but what is the point of bringing up a winless season from 9 years ago?
Last I checked, this article was about an idiot from Clemson beating up his girlfriend. Let's place the blame where it belongs, shall we?

There should be ZERO tolerance for this kind of behavior. If he is guilty, and based on the condition of his girlfriend, I would say he is, he should be kicked off the team premanantly. I would hope he spends a good amount of time in jail too.
Coaches need to tell recruits that there is a zero tolerance for using women as punching bags and off the team they go forever, if they choose to do so.

Face it, Spurrier only agreed to coach at USC so he could get his Augusta National membership. He'll be gone soon. Bowden is waiting on daddy to retire so he can go to FSU. When either team becomes prominent & a national contender, talk your trash. Until then, back to the story at hand.....
What happened here is a case of a young man, thrust into the spotlight (could have been at any college), and who developed a "God complex". With an alumni & athletic association to stand behind him, as well as a large student body, I'm sure homeboy thought he was invincible. Let's hope he's not. Dude needs to cool his heels in jail.
I'm just sayin...

ed52---quite apparently reading comprehension is not one of your strongpoints...for that previous gamecock poster to suggest that someone, ANYONE from IPTAY would approach the victim of this crime to have her drop charges (which she can't do by the way) is, and I'll repeat it, CLASSLESS!!!! And I also wrote I hoped he wasn't representative of the gamecock club..... but please continue twisting the handful of instances of bad behavior at Clemson over the last few years....compared to the mind-boggling litany of arrests, jailings and convictions of athletes at usc over the past 6 or 8 years, it is indeed a short conversation.
The nature of the arrest of DeAndre McDaniel is very, very serious and if convicted, I trust he will be required to do more than just the pti scores of gamecock athletes have been subject to after their arrests. One thing is for sure, Mr. McDaniel will be quickly suspended from all team activities and should the coaching staff be convinced of his guilt, he will be immediately dismissed from the team. Conviction of the crimes will earn him dismissal from the university with no opportunity to become a repeat offender.
I'd suggest that rather than trying to overblow the handful of occasions of criminal behavior at Clemson in the last few years, gamecock fans would be much better served addressing the weighty tome that is the police blotter in Richland County over-filled with the arrests of usc athletes.

again , you confuse the laid back atmostphere of the clemson law enforcement with the anti usc attitude around columbia. I will agree you only have a handful of occasions that make the news. it usually takes 2 years or a third offence for a crime to come to light. Instead of slamming the gamecocks ,you need to be thankful of the control iptay has in the upstate.
One thing you are right about, iptay will not approach her. they would be crazy to fool with this one.

I would rather see Joe Morrison smoke all day long than see Tommy Bowden picking his nose and slinging the "GD" words and Danny Ford hocking up lugeys out of his throat and nose like he used to do. Nothing grosser than that.

I don't care who this guy is, it's hard to believe this assault is a misdemeanor. If he is convicted, let's see if Bowden will be the man this creep will never be and kick him to the curb.
P.S. I'm not a Gamecock fan, so that has nothing to do with this.

I hope we kick him off the team , unlike some schools who keep giving their players chance after chance. I dont want to see us regress and become like that joke of a school up the road in Columbia.
Posted by notafan on June 25, 2008 at 8:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)
youmanyo- funny you fail to mention the kid who got a DUI and Tommy completely overlooked because he needed that kid to play in the bowl game. Selective memory must be a wonderful thing.
Posted by youmanyo on June 25, 2008 at 9:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)
He was not convicted and now he is off the team notaclue. Worry about own thugs and being the offical bitch of Clemson and the rest of the SEC (which is a great conference, but not because of you ).
Posted by notafan on June 25, 2008 at 10:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Like I said avoid the DUI charge just to let him play in the bowl game.
The bitch of the SEC much like Clemson is the bitch of BC?? And what are Clemson's contributions to the ACC? Basketball team how did they do? Baseball did they even make the regionals? Given Carolina's and Clemson's contributions to their respective conferences here of late the two schools have more in common than I thought.

Yes Bc ownes us and so does VT as of late , but you are everyones bitch even Vanderbilts . Your baseball team is top notch but thats all you have except bragging about being in the SEC .Basetball we did great overall i am sure you would have loved to have switched places with us , what did you guys do this year , destroy another great coach . Poor odom went from hero to zero like so many poor other fools who have gone to usuk .
