These images show the man accused of robbing a North Charleston S.C. State Credit Union on Monday. The image at left is from bank security video, and the second image was taken at a Sonoco convenience store moments after the suspect fled the credit union.
To offer tips
Anyone with information on the robberies should call North Charleston police at 554-5700 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
North Charleston police are seeking two suspects in separate robberies, both occurring during the lunch hour Monday. The first happened around noon at the First Franklin Financial, a loan business, on University Boulevard, Public Information Officer Spencer Pryor said. Armed with a handgun, the robber ordered employees and customers to the floor, then he grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from a drawer before fleeing, police said. No one was injured, Pryor said. Witnesses describe the suspect as a black man, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a muscular build, a short haircut, a goatee and wearing a white T-shirt, Pryor said. In a separate incident, the S.C. State Credit Union at 6750 Rivers Ave. was robbed at 12:15 p.m. A man threatened a teller with a weapon and demanded money, Pryor said. The man did not present a weapon and left with an undisclosed amount of money, police said. Witnesses described the robber as a black man wearing a baseball cap, blue shirt and blue jeans. The robbery of the credit union was the fourth bank robbery this year, Pryor said. About two miles south on Rivers Avenue, a Wachovia branch was robbed twice, in January and in February. A third robbery happened in April at the Community First Bank at Dorchester Road and Appian Way. Arrests were made in all three robberies, Pryor said. In 2007, North Charleston reported seven bank robberies, he said. Police want to speak with a customer who may have witnessed the First Franklin robbery. The witness entered the business shortly before the robbery. He is a black man with a dark complexion, stocky build and is about 5 feet 5 inches tall, Pryor said. The witness wore all black and wanted to start an account, he said.

Those two photos don't even look like the same individual to me...maybe it's the quality of the images, but the photo on the right shows a very full face, where the left-hand image looks like he's got a very narrow head...I definitely think it's the same shirt. I think that after he left the bank, he was attacked by a swarm of yellow-jackets, and being allergic, he had to make an emergency phone call, as he was at risk of going into shock, as he forgot to take his epi-pen on the bank heist. I could be wrong.

Whatever happened to bank guards? They should at least spring for some high tech cameras that can capture clearer images.

Come on man, you can't do the 100 man march in the morning and rob banks in the afternoon!
Maybe the man opening the "new account" was a lookout uh?

Lol@ SomeTruthPlease
I'm with you Early, the "potential accountholder" may have been the lookout or the diversion. I mean, it's 90 PLUS DEGREES DOWN HERE!! Why would you wear all black in this summer heat? Sounds real suspect.
Just my fashion opinion...

First Frankilin Financial is not a bank, it is a loan company. I hope everyone was ok.

Two black men rob financial businesses in North Charleston...what a surprise!

Sorry but I'm pissed today, two burglary rape and one burglary with two incidents. This is INSANE, absolutely insane. This is EVERYDAY in our paper. I see why people move away from the south and endure the frigid weather of the North and Northwest. It's to get away from this crap. it's getting to the point where I actually fear for my children.

This is becoming alarmingly more frequent. I use the drive up windows at the banks, and only go to convenience stores that are very busy in hopes of avoiding these incidents.

I never go to the bank alone, especially not the ATM's. It's sad when you can't even step outside your door for fear of someone robbing you. I hope they catch whoever did it and I am glad no one was hurt.

Hey early, hate to burst your bubble but i moved from up North (around DC) to get away from crap like this. It's even worse up there with MS13, all the gangs in SE DC and PG county MD veying for dominant drug trade and little kids getting caught in the cross fire. and lets not even mention the lock down of an entire area of DC be the DCPD . They even set up gestapo style checkpoints and if you did not live there or have a good reason to be in that area you got arrested!

tmh32, I'm pretty sure that Early was speaking of places like North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana. You don't see much of this type of crime up there. They still have their crazies, but they are far and few between.

Thanks Coldbeer,,I should have specified, you are correct.
I had several friends who were born and raised here, had families here and moved away because of this, they live in Iowa and vow never to come back. Their kids go to public schools, they can send them to the mall on a Friday night by themselves, waterparks etc, like the good ole days.
Anyway!

Number1, I dont think I'd stand a chance having a double barrel shotgun on my seat. :-( I was considering getting a small gun but in a few months, I am going to have a baby in the house (not that I'd leave out or loaded) but the thought scares me. It's bad when you have to think of arming yourself just to get money out of the ATM. Quite frankly, it's disgusting.

Crime is nothing like this in Va Beach. The public schools are phenomenal. I didn't know how good we had it until we moved here. Ugh.
And something else I've noticed here....blacks have a bad 'rap' here. There is so much riff-raff among the race. Blacks are upstanding citizens where I come from, well respected and RESPECTFUL. Why the difference here?
Posted by MissVAbch on June 24, 2008 at 10:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Generalizing, of course. I know that there are outstanding black citizens here.

Hmmm... I spent a summer in the Va. Beach area back in 2003. Have they improved the area that much in 5 years? Prostitution, drugs and all of the related crimes were pretty bad back then. Maybe not right on the beach, but certainly in the surrounding areas. You have to get out in the middle of nowhere to get away from crime now-a-days. Even then, you're likely to run in to the unibomber or some freaked out religious cult leader.
All cities have their good areas and bad areas. The difference is that, in some cities, management actually does what it can to try and keep the bad areas in check. North Charleston seems to be making a concerted effort in the past few months. They have a long way to go though. Even if North Charleston were to get its act together, we’ll still deal with crime until riley is voted out of office and someone steps in that cares about such things.

MissVa, you aint seen anything yet as far as blacks getting a bad rap. Wait til you read some of the comments posted by some people, which leads to a lot of generalizations. All of us aren't uneducated welfare recipients with several baby mamas or baby daddies living in public housing driving Caprices with 28's on them who sell dope and rob people. I've been taught not to see color but people. Everyone doesnt think like me. JMO
I miss VA!! Lol I have family in Norfolk.

Then crime must be under-reported there because you sure don't read about crime like it is here. It seems so out of control here. I lived there from 1996 until a year ago. Read the paper every day. Very different. What area are you referring to, CB?
Tammie...I miss VA too..hence the name:) I want to go to a real mall! Northwoods and Citadel the best there is here?? *sigh*

MissVAbch, I was actually staying in Portsmouth. I realize that the people in VA. Beach would absolutely KILL me for saying that they are the same area, but in reality, they are. The Norfolk area is just like the Charleston area (and just like most other cities). You got good areas and bad areas. The Norfolk "area" has it's fair share of crime. I lived in Va. Beach when I was younger, but I was too young to care about crime.
I'll admit that things are bad in this area right now. They seem to be getting worse on a daily basis too. It may very well be true that we have more crime problems than the Norfolk area (which is sad considering Norfolk is a real city, size wise).
I like the traffic here better though. It can be bad, but the Norfolk area can be down right crazy.

I work in the North Charleston area and I've never feared for my safety until the last couple of years. It seems like every day anymore there is an article in the paper where "North Charleston" and "crime" are in the same sentence. There are businesses bolting from this area faster than Ted Kennedy at Chappaquidck. You think it's a coincidence?
Being so close to Hanahan in the Remount Road area sure as hell doesn't help. I'm sick and tired of seeing bums walking around here panhandling. The old Sam's building on Rivers Avenue has been abandoned for about 3 or 4 years now. Is it any wonder why no business has gone there? This area sucks. That's all there is to it.
And I want you all to know that I have nothing but the highest respect for the police and law enforcement yet where in the hell are they when you need them? Maybe if one of these robbers get speeding tickets they'll be able to get these punks off the street. Otherwise we'll have to keep putting up with this crap because the people can't do this alone. The North Charleston police need to do their job.

I agree with you that the Portsmouth side of town (P-town..adopted slang name by the Portsmouth residents) is probably much like N Charleston. Charleston similar to Norfolk, but VA Beach and Chesapeake seem much more safe.
I'll disagree on the traffic. With a population much larger than this area, the traffic runs much smoother and has an infrastructure that works. They also are always improving roads. I have never seen so many potholes in my life than since I moved here, and where are all the road signs? Lost in the weeds and twisted on the corner.

MissVAbch:
SC drivers are dyslexic, too. They stop at green lights, go through red lights, and FLOOR IT through yellow lights. And, no offense here, but has anyone noticed that the worst drivers in this area are the ones with the religious signs on the cars? Anytime I see a car with one of those fish I just think to myself "Give this driver some divine intervention!"
You're right about the potholes, too. Also, apparently there is a Charleston traffic rule I wasn't aware of called "left turn on red." I see this happening every day at Rivers Avenue by the red light near the McDonald's and Popeye's. I've heard of "right turn on red" but when did "left turn on red" become legal? I must have missed a meeting I guess.

Wanna know where North Charleston's Finest can be found ?
Just take a ride to the old Naval Shipyard. . .
3 - 5 NC Police Squad cars and policemen each making about $20 an hour (off duty of course) protecting and monitoring the filming of "Army Wives"
Don't believe me? Go see it for yourself, I see it everyday.

Early,
allwoman was booted off. She has been suspended for 30 days because of "off topic" posts and because she said that she was going to see if she could shut the board down just to piss that dude (can't recall his name right now) off. She will not be returning once the suspension is lifted.

carlosthedwarf, You are correct about SC drivers. The intersection that you are referring to is at Rivers and Aviation and I see it all the time. The light for those of us on Rivers will turn green and cars continue to make left turns, and they are clearly going right through the intersection after their light has turned red. Oh yeah, and they have the nerve to give you a hand gesture or nasty look if you blow your horn at them. I guess they must have passed a new law that I'm not aware of in that people who run red lights have the right-of-way. Rivers & Aviation is a prime example of why we need red light cameras.
At the exits onto Aviation off I-26 people are also obviously not aware that there is a little upside-down triangle sign in red that says "yield" Rather than fly right through it and cause oncoming traffic to slam on brakes, as though they are daring you to hit them, they are supposed to slow down and check to make sure nothing is coming. If cars are coming, they're supposed to stop and wait for an opening. I don't understand why these simple concepts are so difficult for some people. Oh well, I guess I'm reaching for the stars.
Getting back on the issue of the bank robbery, I believe that there is a way we could make better identifications of people who do this. Just like we have fingerprints that are unique, retinal scans that are unique, our bodies also generate heat waves that are unique and show up on infrafred camera. Here's my idea: When someone is arrested for a violent offense, take an infrared scan as well as retinal and fingerprint. Install specialized equipment that can read infrared in places like banks and convenience stores. If a robber comes in, the camera would get an id on them regardless of how many clothes they're wearing to disguse themselves.

Crime is everywhere. It's only a matter of time before it visits an area near you. You hear it all the time: That never happens in my neighborhood. Well, sooner or later it will come to your neighborhood. Be it burglary, drugs, domestic violence, unruly teens, crime has no boundaries.
I lived in Va. Beach and Norfolk, the only difference is that they don't advertise their crime as much as Charleston. How do I know that? I worked in the criminal division of Norfolk Cirucit Court.

Missvabeach - I have been bogged down in traffic in Norfolk and Va. Beach many, many times and I have run through many potholes in Norfolk. I love my 15-20 minute commute here in Charleston. My 1 hour commute to the Naval Base which was only a few more miles than my Charleston commute sucked. I'm glad gas wasn't as high then. Furthermore, when there was an accident, you had the same sightseers as you have here in Charleston, which caused traffic to back up even more.
