Scott calling for election panel change

Defeated senator says push for reform soon after election isn't 'sour grapes'

State Sen. Randy Scott, R-Summerville

SUMMERVILLE — Fresh off a defeat for a re-election bid, state Sen. Randy Scott is calling for an overhaul of the Dorchester County Election Commission.

Scott lost the Republican primary for District 38 last week to former state Sen. Mike Rose.

He called a meeting of the county legislative delegation Thursday to talk about re-evaluating at least some board members whose terms have expired.

He didn't get any support from the three House members who joined him in council chambers.

"Replacing any of these people before the November election would be suicide," said Rep. Annette Young, also a Republican.

Nobody in the audience of about 50 supported the idea. Critics called it payback.

"The timing of this request is at best suspect and smells of sour grapes," Kim Logue, who lives in King's Grant, told the delegation. "The move appears to be vindictive in nature."

Scott said critics were misrepresenting what he was proposing.

"I'm not on a witch hunt," Scott said. "There are no sour grapes."

Scott said he was thinking the election commission was out of order even before this month's primary. For instance, all seven members are serving with expired terms.

He said he's also concerned that vacant positions aren't advertised and that terms aren't staggered.

Reps. Heyward Hutson, a Republican, and Patsy Knight, a Democrat, also attended the meeting. After some discussion, the lawmakers agreed to leave things as they are until the legislature reconvenes in January.

Scott got the delegation to agree to get a legal opinion before reappointing the daughter of Dorchester Water Authority Administrator Oscar Black to the water board. Linda Evans, who has served six years, is Black's daughter.

Young said she saw no problem, especially since Scott appointed one of his relatives as a county magistrate.

"OK, that was a good shot at me," Scott responded. "But this is different."

One fine afternoon in Summerville Mr. Scott was riding his Segway around getting the support of the people, and when he rode up to me all I could think of saying was "You're not drinking while driving that thing are you?" But before I could get the words out, he turned and left...like he knew!
"OK, that was a good shot at me," Scott responded. "But this is different."

Associated Press - June 19, 2008 10:55 AM ET

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The former sheriff of Robeson County will spend six years in prison for lying to a federal grand jury that was investigating corruption.

The Robesonian of Lumberton reports that U.S. District Court Judge Terrence Boyle sentenced Glenn Maynor on Thursday.

The former lawman pleaded guilty in September to one count of perjury and one count conspiracy. Prosecutors said in addition to lying to the grand jury, Maynor allowed deputies to be paid for working at his home and at an election campaign golf tournament.

Maynor faced up to 10 years in prison. He will report to start his term behind bars on Aug. 1.

The charges against Maynor stemmed from a 6-year investigation that has led to guilty pleas from 22 former Robeson County lawmen.

Randy Scott is a fool. A lame duck with a grudge. If he had "stood tall" and admitted his DUI he would have had a better chance in the primary. No one likes it when someone (especially a politician) plays the legal system to their advantage without regard for the truth. He believed that he could lie in court and that it wouldn't matter to those who were going to vote in the primary. Randy Scott is a loser, and he ought to keep his mouth shut and leave office gracefully, but it may be too late for that.

"I'm not on a witch hunt," Scott said. "There are no sour grapes."

Do you know how to tell when a politician is lying to you?
His lips are moving...

"Scott said he was thinking the election commission was out of order even before this month's primary. For instance, all seven members are serving with expired terms."

And you now have all this spare time to look into the matter?

Maybe Chris is just trying to divert our attention from the article. I believe he was a Scott supporter.

Scott really makes his supporters proud. What a cry baby. I wonder why Scott never brought this issue up before the election? And would he have brought it up if he had won in the primary.

He must have had two more glasses of wine before he came up with this one.

Man! This guy needs to grow up! He looses the election because of HIS OWN actions, blames everybody else, and now wants to overhaul the election commission! He needs to just go away.

Notafan: I agree, his supporters should be proud!

I was a supporter, but I am far from "proud". I am very disappointed.

Is it my imagination, or is almost everyone involved in the political scene in Dorchester County related?
For an example:
Scott got the delegation to agree to get a legal opinion before reappointing the daughter of Dorchester Water Authority Administrator Oscar Black to the water board. Linda Evans, who has served six years, is Black's daughter.

Young said she saw no problem, especially since Scott appointed one of his relatives as a county magistrate.

I think Scott is on to something. Dump all the elected officials in Dorchester County and start over.

Scott I was on your side and even made the mistake of voting for you... thanks for acting like a total ass and making your supporters look like idiots
