The Loop Pizza Grill
Rob Young
A bit of trivia: Name three Charleston area chain restaurants with roots in Jacksonville, Fla. No. 1: Firehouse Subs. The deuce: Larry's Giant Subs. And three: The Loop Pizza Grill. Just what're they cooking up in J-action-ville, anyway? The Loop opened its first South Carolina restaurant two years ago in the Shoppes at Park West in Mount Pleasant. How's the food? We're pleased as punch to say it's pretty good — from the pizza, wraps, hand-pattied burgers, to the soups, salads, fish and chicken sandwiches, and shakes. We tried the artichoke and smoked bacon pizza, one of the Loop's specialty pies, served on fluffy, buttery crust. It's chock-full of warm, toasty garlic cloves, roma tomatoes, portabello mushroom wedges, calamata olives, and of course, artichokes and bacon. An individual 8-inch pizza costs $7.99; a 12-inch medium $13.99; a large 16-inch $19.99. Choose from 21 ingredients to create your own pizza ($4.79-$12.99), either deep dish Chicago-style or thin crust. The crunchy broccoli salad ($7.49) is a Loop favorite with toasted walnuts and tomatoes in a sweet red wine vinaigrette. Same goes for the gorgonzola walnut salad ($7.49) in balsamic vinaigrette. One of our favorites is the tomato bisque soup (cup, $2.19; bowl, $4.19) with baked asiago cheese croutons, surprisingly good in 100-degree climes. And laurels for the Loop's ice, too - soft and crunchy pellets, just like Sonic. You can take home a bag for $1.79.
