Beard Awards This year Charleston had a fine roster of chefs nominated for James Beard Awards, which recognize the best chefs in America. Known as the "Oscars of Food," this annual event which takes place from the Lincoln Center in New York, celebrates the best in the industry. Competing in the Southeast (Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia) region, the winner was chef Robert Stehling of Hominy Grill. Congratulations are in order not only to Stehling and his operation but also fellow nominees, Sean Brock (Rising Star) and Mike Lata (Southeast). Big time Mark your calendars — On Monday Blackjack Barbecue pitmaster and caterer Jimmy Hagood will appear in a cook-off against Ed Mitchell of North Carolina cue fame on NBC's "Today" show. "Today" is hosting a three-day series on regional barbecue. Not wanting to leave the Big Apple after participating in the 6th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party and then return to NYC with the high cost of fuel, the Big Red Rig is happily parked at the 42nd Street police precinct until after the cook-off. I scream ... Circa 1886, located on the grounds of Wentworth Mansion at 149 Wentworth St., is sponsoring an ice-cream contest to determine the flavor that best says "Charleston." Submit your idea and recipe to the Charleston Choice Ice Cream Contest. The chefs at Circa 1886 will determine the winning recipe. The selected ice cream will then become a part of the restaurant's menu and be served during August. The winner earns bragging rights and dinner for four at Circa 1886 (excluding alcoholic beverages and tip). Pastry chef Scott Lovorn will oversee the contest. The winning flavor will be judged based on taste, creativity and availability of ingredients. To submit your recipe, go to www.circa1886.com. The recipe deadline is July 25. Foodie 101 Chef Aaron Deal and sommelier Brian Austin will ring the culinary school bell beginning July 16 at Tristan Restaurant. The program will run for five consecutive Wednesdays, 6-7 p.m. The cost is $45 and is limited to 20 "students." Tristan is located at 55 Market St. The graduates of last year's Foodie 101 are welcome to attend again, as no part of the program will be repeated. The featured curriculum is: July 16: soup and salad; July 23: appetizers; July 30: entrees; Aug. 6: desserts; Aug. 13: cheese. Foods and wine will be paired during each class hour.
