A fast-moving thunderstorm swept through the Charleston area Monday night, dropping hail and knocking down trees and power lines in West Ashley and on Johns and James islands. Nearly 4,000 electricity customers in Charleston County were without power late into the night. Many of them live in West Ashley and on the islands. The storm about 8 p.m. snapped a power pole on the Lee Westbury Bridge on the side leading into Folly Beach from James Island. The top of the pole was leaning over the bridge, and officers rerouted traffic on one lane coming from Folly Beach. SCE&G had a crew working at the bridge scene late Tuesday. Police said there were strong winds and pea-sized hail near the bridge when the storm passed through the area. Trees, limbs and power lines were down in several areas on James and Johns islands. Lightning struck a house in the Headquarters Plantation community, but the house did not catch fire. Reach Nadine Parks at 937-5573 or nparks@post andcourier.com.
