Rep. Clyburn draws fire for earmarks
$6.2M in designations might benefit House majority leader's family, friends

The Post and Courier
Rep. Jim Clyburn
MYRTLE BEACH — South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn has earmarked millions of taxpayer dollars this decade for projects that could directly benefit his friends and family members, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach found that Clyburn has set aside at least $6.2 million for such projects.
That includes money for two projects his nephew was to help design, a community center that runs a program employing his sister-in-law and a Columbia wellness center that employs his daughter.
Clyburn is the House majority whip. He was the sole sponsor for 32 earmarks totaling $38.8 million in the current budget.
In contrast, all of South Carolina's other lawmakers combined to sole-sponsor $45.5 million in earmarks in the same budget.
Clyburn's office did not return calls seeking comment, although he has repeatedly defended the earmark process, telling reporters last year that the special provisions help provide for community needs.
'I don't see that as wasteful government spending,' he told reporters in February 2007. 'I see that as responding to the needs these people said they had.'
Citizens Against Government Waste, a nonprofit group that watches taxpayer money, calls Clyburn 'hostile' toward taxpayers because of what is termed an extravagant use of public money.
'Mr. Clyburn is notorious for questionable earmarks,' said Leslie Paige, a spokeswoman for the group.
The group once named Clyburn as its Porker of the Month because he set aside $3 million in a military spending bill for the First Tee nonprofit agency. First Tee operates a program at a Columbia golf course named for the congressman. Clyburn defended the money on the House floor, saying the money would benefit military families.
This year's budget includes at least four earmarks that could benefit people close to Clyburn.
The veteran lawmaker helped secure $784,000 for the planning and design of the International African-American Museum in Charleston. Clyburn's nephew, Derrick Ballard, is one of the lead architects on that project.
Similarly, in 2005, Clyburn earmarked $145,500 for a community center to be designed by Ballard.
He also set aside $229,000 in this year's budget to the Charles R. Drew Wellness Center in Columbia — a facility he helped construct with a 2003 earmark of $990,000. His daughter, Angela, is the marketing and membership director there.
He got $282,000 appropriated for The South Sumter Resource Center, where his sister-in- law, Gwendolyn, is housing coordinator for the center's community development division. He's secured $670,000 for the resource center in past budgets.

Oh boy. Sounds like Cyburn is going to take a fall this time. He may join the ranks of other Congressmen and US Senators who have been taken to the cleaners by the Dept of Justice.
If there is any truth to this, Cyburn and his circle is likely to end up indicted.

Earmarks for the use of state or local governments are one thing, but when it is for the express purpose of personal favors to family or friends ... time to reprimand/recall another crooked politician !

What?...Another crooked politician wasting our tax dollars?
...Say it ain't so! Nothing can be done about it...his black majority district will re-elect him until another crook comes along and promises more free stuff than he does.

I haven't noticed that blindly voting for the politician who can "appropriate" from the federal or state coffers to buy voters is a black thing moonpie. That's what politicians think taxes are for...to buy voters. And apparently the vast majority of Americans agree with them. Go to cagw.org and read the crap that our legislators think are federal priorities...and that's only at the federal level. Santee wanted a convention center, so Clyburn decided a federal "emergency evacuation center" was absolutely necessary in...Santee! He finangled $1.5 million federal tax dollars for this evacuation center, and since it won't be use very often Santee gets to use it as a convention center...

KKK is now,,,kristians? You are the most racial bigot on the board pig! No more wasting my fingers on this idiot.
Obama promises to severely cut down earmarks. He is the first one to tackle this enormous problem. ALL political figures try and earmark for their community, it's the name of the game and with Clyburn being the whip, most of his constitutes will not question him. He is brave however to bring it sooooo close to home!

And raregar, your racist remarks are noted with the usual disdain.

His actions are not an isolated incident. Many politicians, of all races, do this type of thing. These types of acts should be considered criminal in nature and the dirt bags prosecuted.

So is Jim Clyburn the only politician to ever do this sort of thing? It goes on all the time, that's how they build and maintain their constituencies. They provide services and monies to their home districts. How this got to be a referendum on Black politicians I have no idea.

I'd never run for office because I would pledge not to seek re-election. The longer they serve the better their Government pensions, health care and other perks that they vote for THEMSELVES.
Somewhere the voting populace has gotten the idea that the dollars spent in Washington, D.C. is equivilent to Monopoly money. Just where do you think that funding comes from for these projects? They come from our tax dollars. Lest you fall for the notion that you "deserve" to have your tax dollars come back to you in one form or another, stop and think for a second. The more that Congress spends the more they need to tax...that comes from your pocket and mine.

Lets hope Katie Couric and Bill O'Rielly have interviewers chasing him down the street to ask him about his earmarks before he ducks into his giant SUV or limo. That would be great to see. "Congressman Clyburn can you tell us about these earmarks?" "Sorry, late for a meeting gotta go!" After what they did to Trent Lott why not remove Clyburn's title as majority whip? This would send a great message to all of Congress if they can do it.

But on other article, you say:

Bottom line is favortism and conflict of interest is clearly being shown here. I doubt seriously if I called Mr. Clyburn to pull a little BBQ pork from his pig for a charity which helps the underpriveliged I would get a call back.
BTW, I'm Christian, white and help African Americans and others through a charity in which I am intimately involved. Does that put me in the KKK?

Re-read what I said. "When it goes to something tangible...then good" In other words, when it goes to something where I can see a good benefit then GOOD, as in it's fine with me.
Obviously something may be fishy here which is why I said "this needs to be cleaned up ASAP". There's no contradiction here...I care how my taxes is being spent and what my governement is doing. Which if you have been reading my posts, which you obviously have :) , you would know I have been very anti-most of the military spending our government is doing now.
Taxes ARE how governments run, but saying that doesn't absolve those in charge of that money of any wrongdoing. On the flip side complaining about EVERYTHING that is funded by taxes (as you were doing in the other article) seems at most, futile. Since you will always be taxed, and likely it always go to something you won't like or support. For example, my feelings about the Iraq war and our defense spending (one of many things).

Don't tell me I don't know. I grew up blacks and I work with blacks. I know how they are. And they will come out of the wood work to defend Cyburn. I say let them. The more people we can put in prison for corruption, the better off the majority of we tax payers become.
The more I think about it, and after reading some of the above post, the more I think Cyburn is corrupt. The good old boy system is coming to a fast end. I hope they throw the book at him and toss him under a prison.

Hmm, I always wondered about this "angry black man" thing. It seems to me that this board is filled with the exact opposite. The "angry white man syndrome" is strong within the P&C board. People who would not normally express their opinions this way to the actual person of another race get to let off "steam" on a local newspaper board that only a few people actually comment on. Now that I think of it, it is always the same people on this board constantly posting (including me) so I guess that means we're running in circles trying to explain the same principles to the same racist idiots all day.
JohnQ - I hate to be cynical about it but you aren't going to change the mind of any bigot esp not one who goes on a newspaper board to express their delusions. I don't want to tell you to give it up but a while back I decided to just use this board for entertainment purposes. I will engage in discussions but rarely have I found any intelligent conversation. It is usually the same old race baiting from users who somehow claim that P&C is doing all the race baiting. Oh, and don't forget how they will call you a racist and when you scroll up you notice that THEY are usually the one who injected race into the comment section first. WOW. I am on a roll. oh oh, and don't forget how the people who want less government conveniently agree with sterilization programs for "unfit" women or some kind of other government intrusion. Hmm. Just a tad hypocritical. I guess as baiting is concerned P&C has them hook, line and sinker.

If I can get a waist like seven of nine I would think twice about the borg thing. Allwoman is right, we don't move collectively. We don't have some kind of black person listserve that emails all the members (black folks) and tells them to wear red on sunday or to donate money for Al Sharpton's hair appointment.
I swear it is just crazy. The craziness that people assume black folks adhere to are the ones that ALL of the black people I know are against. We all like NAACP - I don't know any black folks who are personally a member and I know a few who are anti-NAACP (not for the reasons you think though). We all love Al Sharpton - Most black people I know dislike him and Jesse. Also, a LOT of black folks agree with Bill Cosby but a lot like me, don't really care for him. No offense, but he is a serial adulterer. Whenever he talks about morals I cringe. You are going with what YOU believe instead of what is actually true. I doubt you have ever personally asked any black folks (other than the P&C board folks) their opinions on these issues. I think you would be surprised but I know you won't do it.
Early - Seems like you posted a description of yourself just now. Don't know why. I already knew that about you.
Posted by SCdeacinNYC on June 16, 2008 at 1:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
allwoman, for a split second I had decided that my new policy would be to insert race into any article comment section when a white person did anything...you know how this was a disgrace to white people and how white people should be ashamed and get themselves together. And also, my new favorite, how white people would inevitably rally behind a leader no matter how crooked and dishonest because that's what white people do. Also, I would throw in a few other unfounded stereotypes about white people based on one or two white people i've known....or read about on P and C.
Then I realized, for obvious reasons that would be immensely exhausting and I wonder how the race baiters on p and c even have the drive to spout that much hate on EVERY article that relates to black people. Oh sure they choose to comment on some articles relating to what white people are doing wrong, but its never anything critical of white people in general. I don't understand why, because it seems to me from their logic of thinking ANYthing a person of any race does badly ..it can be attributed to the entire race. So this article about James Clyburn's wrongdoings somehow relate to how black people need to get it together. I may be wrong, but is the first semi-major event I've heard of concerning his wrongdoing. So he's let down his constituency doing things I'm sure most of them weren't aware of prior to today.
Finally, black people aren't the only people voting for crooked politicians. Just do the math...most politicians are white...there are crooked politicians from across both aisles and all across America, on average though most are White males and elected by predominantly white americans. So Thomas, when I can start talking about white people being sheep?

In the last article it seemed like your words whether intentional or not encouraged them but I am guessing it was just a misunderstanding. We can agree to disagree and move on to the real people who deserve scorn.

Awww I'm glad allwoman and Test are back to making nice again.
Allwoman, I agree. It seems black people are all over the place...we are making moves. Either we don't vote...or we always vote for black politicians (because there are so many of them..)to give us all "handouts". Wow, we've really become a shrewd race of people according to estimates on this board, but at the same time remain primitive enough to be labeled sheep. The contradictions are mind boggling!!
Oh and congrats on the new baby boy....I can't imagine how amazing that is. The biggest life change I have now is moving into a new apartment (which in NYC is a big enough headache on its own).

I'm trying to find somewhere that's not too tiny...that's relatively close to work in a nice area AND that's affordable. Especially because of their 40x the montly rent requirement at most apartments in order to even be considered. What a crazy and frustrating time I have ahead! :) I've looked at a couple of crapholes and a couple of places with $800 application fees (a rip-off) and of course co-op board approvals (also a silly process). Yeah allwoman, I definitely don't plan on buying here soon...one I can't afford it (and don't see the benefit of paying 500K for a tiny little one bedroom) and two, because the requirements are even more stringent.
So often I check the requirements, which are usually 40x, but sometimes more before I even venture into it....I was told that I could afford to pay upwards up almost 1800 a month by NYC standards of requirements, but I don't think I could ever see fit to pay that much on my own for a place, especially if the entirety of it is the size of my bedroom at my parent's house in SC!!

They tried to walk to a neighboring parish and was threatened with guns, dogs, and everything else you could think of by the POLICE. In your own country you can't even go to the next neighborhood. PICTURE THAT!!

GG that's because they were looting, raping, and shooting each other often enough that the police needed to contain people until they could sort it out... no need for that in Iowa because those people are much more civilized...
and btw I was here for hurricane Hugo, lost power for weeks, had 3 trees come through my roof and no one came running from the govt to help me either... nor did I ask, I took care of things myself as I will do if/when we get hit again
JohnQ I agree, the repub's sold us all out... I really have no clue who I'll vote for this time if at all
McInsane doesn't represent me, neither does Obonga
Gayham is a traitor as well
we need one primary all on the same day so the person that "the people" really want can be elected... this crap of long drawn out contest until we weed the poorer people out is total BS and is no representation of our desires for leadership
this very well may be the first time I don't vote

30% of The population of New Orleans during Katrina were convicted felons.
Not sure of the percentage in Iowa but my guess is it would be substatially less. JohnQ fails to mention (as is normally the case with elitist liberals who blame their problems on others) that the mayor and governor at the time were democrats. These were the same people who either did not ask for federal help or refused it (subject to arguement, depending on whom you believe most). How many hurricanes hit FL that year and the year preceeding it? No mention of any looting or riots. It is also quite diverse in FL so the race argument does not hold there.

I guess there are a few black people living in Iowa now, I stand corrected...

now I know why they call you JohnNoIQ
68 yr old white man gets caught stealing says "ok I give"
43 yr old black man gets caught stealing pulls a knife and threatens an entire family over a few material things...
fortunately the white man had enough testicular fortitude to knock the sh*t out of him with a shovel and end an otherwise tragic situation
1/1 right? so what's the population percentage?

Silly me, thinking I could log on today to read some intelligent debates.
Clyburn is a dishonest crook, as are the majority of politicians.
I once took my young son to a Folly Beach town council meeting. The mayor asked me if I was grooming him for a political career. My response was, "Lord No! I hope he does something more respectable with his life. I just brought him here so he could see what clowns look like when they aren't wearing make-up."

Who gives a rat's ass what race he is?
All you morons (and you know who you are)should be concerned with is that here is another low life dishonest politician, who along with his friends and families are profiting off your tax dollars. It is definitly not a new concept, especially in South Carolina. As far as I can figure out the white guys are pretty good at that stuff also. Hell Clyburn probably learned it from a white politician in the first place and that is why he is so good at it. At any rate no matter their color they should all be charged, arrested, thrown in jail, then tried. After the trial they should all be drawn and quartered with their heads stuck on the flag pole at the capitol in Columbia so all the other lying thieving cutthroats up there can see what the public thinks about the abuse of their trust as well as their tax dollars. I am so sick of these sobs it is not even funny anymore, it is like my head is going to explode. oh no not again

JohnQ I won, the white guy that was ALMOST robbed didn't lose a thing... lol
Clyburn's OK, he told us all he was doing this ahead of time... and even removed himself from votes on much of it so it did't look like he was pulling favoritism
short memories people have
so what if the rural areas finally got some attention, they are in bad need of a lot more IMHO

Jammer- so because SOME poeple were looting, everyone was called a refugee and that is the reason they could not walk into neighboring parishes? Your ideas are still twisted. You make it sound like everything that happened to the poeple of New orleans, or Missisissippi is their fault. I don't think Charleston was under water like New Orleans was, were they? New Orleans was playing politics with those people lives and still are today. How would you feel to be stranded in a house and then when help comes they dropped you off at a bridge to go inside a coliseum that had human waste, dead people, and all that around. You can not compare Hugo, or a flood to Hurrican Katrina and the devestation it brought. New Orleans is still not up to par and we don't know if it ever will be. How would you feel that you have to pay property taxes, police tax, city tax, school tax and there is no school you could send your children too and no police and no home, and no city?
You ask for the differences find out how Charleston city DID come to the aid of people that needed help compared to New Orleans. I can say Charleston was worried about people lives and New Orleans did not care. As far as the tvs and crap goes, that is ridiculous and I would never understand why people were looting things like that when there was no electricity but people were also stealing food, diapers, baby food and medical supplies to survice while the government sat around and Bush flew in a plane above watching everything days later and his mama thought "Dem Nigras had it good sleeping in a gym on a cot." Yep Jammer all those folks in New Orleans got exactly what they deserve. (yeah right) You cannot compare the two disasters and when YOU compare them all you see is black and white. I'm looking at it and I don't see color because black and white was affected by the storm, I see our goverment playing politics with these folks and it's sad.
Are you a person that sit there and watch the news to hear something bad and when you see it was a white person you say "Damn, why did he had to do something like that?" or when you see a black person on Tv you say " He got what he deserves." or if you see a Latino you say" must be illegal."
Why does everything have to be in black and white with you? Then you and John arguing about the first looter's race....c'mon now
We can find something else to argue about without introducing race.

Thomas 1776 - Sweetie I love being black, negro, african american, southern, american and esp a woman. I am not filled with hate or bitterness but I have read some of your posts so I doubt if anyone would blame me if I were. You, however seem to be the hatemonger on this site. I don't have any stepbrothers or stepsisters either but I do have a pure talent of recognizing an ignoramus when I read his/her hate filled speech online. You have been identified as such.
Early - you get NOTHING

The people who were hardest hit by katrina were the cajuns living in the swamps. The had their lives back together in months, not years. They didn't get any help at all from the government, they just did it.
People in NO were on the roofs of 3 and 4 story apartment complexes with signs saying they had no food or water the day after the hurricane. entire apartment buildings, no one had stored food, filled the tub with water, done a darned thing to prepare other than buy beer for the hurricane party.
I live near orangeburg but I've got enough canned goods stocked and well water bottled for a couple of weeks at all times, and I don't even have a hurricane bearing down on me or children to take care of.
If katrina became political it's because the residents were so reliant on government that they never even bothered to take care of themselves.

People are talking about Obama here. Which is funny, because he isn't mentioned in the article.
But as we're on the subject, don't look for Obama to be fiscally conservative. He has already openly stated he is going to be raising your taxes. Plus, He has been brought up on kickback Chicago politics. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets indicted this year by Patrick Fitzgerald. His buddy Blagojevich is about to be impeached, and Fitzgerald just convicted his real-estate fairy Rezko. If Obama gets elected he'll have to use the new taxes he put on you to pay for this guy's silence. Oh wait, he could pardon him, but still, Obama gets by on bribes. How do you think he got the super delegates to pick him over Clinton? Problem for the tax payer will be paying for a government that has to bribe everyone to function.
Earmarks? That's nothing compared to what Obama's got planned for you to pay for.

More Congressional dishonesty. It makes absolutely no difference what race this Congressional member is...wrong and dishonest is wrong and dishonest...period. Nothing excuses this kind of behavior and it should be promptly and effectively dealt with. If Representative William Jefferson of New Orleans is any example, however, don't hold your breath. IMO, doing things like this with your "power" for family members or yourself are the most reprehensible of crimes against the position you have been elected to by the "people". He is there to perform for the betterment of the whole, not of his family members at the expense of the whole (us)...it's disgusting.

I am extremely disappointed with the comments in response to this article. Have any of you bothered to research the facts? Obviously not.Instead, you mouth off in ignorance just like the editors at the Myrtle Beach Sun News. If you care to find out the truth behind the earmarks, visit Congressman Clyburn's website http://clyburn.house.gov. I don't think after reading the press release in its entirety you will feel the same way.
He only supports what the community leaders within his district ask him to support. Do you really think he spends his time thinking up ideas to spend money on? Please. There is an extensive process by which these requests must go through in order to get funded. Wake up and educate yourself!
The COMMUNITIES where these projects are came to his office to REQUEST his help to finance these things. Let look at the program to curb obesity in young children at the Drew Wellness Center. Have you seen the health reports for Columbia's children? Do you even know where Drew is located? Obviously not. It would have been a slap in the face of the people in that community if he had not helped them.
The State newspaper had a short blurb clarifying their previous report, however, that didn't make TV news. One relative just works in the same building, so how is that person receiving favors? I too work hard to pay taxes and don't want my money wasted either, but don't pick on just one member of Congress. Do some research to see what others have done. Go to www.fedspending.org, click on the contracts tab to the left. There's a drop down menu for all members of Congress. Do a comparison to see who has secured money for ALL South Carolinians, not just big corps. or the businesses of their friends.
