Calling all artists

The BB&T Charleston Food + Wine Festival and its partner Charleston magazine present the third annual official poster competition.

The rules are "Artists who are 18 years or older and residents of the tri-county area (Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester) may submit original works of art for consideration in the design contest of the 2009 festival poster. Artists' designs should illustrate Charleston's unique culinary culture and flourishing food scene, while exhibiting characteristics that would appropriately represent the festival.

Keeping with the theme of the past two years, artists are required to incorporate into the design the signature wine stain (available with the application)."

The artist selected as the winning poster designer will receive a $1,000 cash prize, recognition as the official poster artist, and 12 posters and various retail items that feature the design.

The winning design will be featured at this food and wine event and on all retail merchandise associated with Food + Wine 2009. Deadline for submissions is Aug. 22. Entry is free. Log on to www.charlestonmag.com to download an application.

The 2009 judges include Melina Smith Monk (Charleston magazine), Grandee Ray (Grande Ideas), chef Sean Brock (McCrady's), Amy Reed (Helium), Jason Fletcher (2008 competition winner, The Post and Courier) and Angel Postell (Charleston Food + Wine Festival).

Hard hat area

Fish Restaurant and the American Theater on King Street are closing this month to undergo expansion and remodeling projects. The original designer of Fish, Reggie Gibson returns for the renovations at the restaurant. The existing bar will triple in size, and a new dining room will be expanded into the space at 440 King St.

The Art-Deco-inspired American Theater will also undergo a revamping. The second theater and concession area will become a ballroom. It will then be available for private parties and corporate events. Glenn Keyes Architects will oversee this project.

The art-deco style will remain.

The front theater, as well as Star's Bar, will remain unchanged. A completion date has not been set for the renovation and reopening.

Order online

Laura Alberts, Tasteful Options, located at 891 Island Park Drive on Daniel Island (881-5711), will provide its diners the option of going online to order and pay for their lunches. This service will expedite corporate orders and facilitate the carry-out business for other diners as well.

Look for the link on its Web site, www.lauraalberts.com.

In season

Since "eating local" seems to be the current climate of the food world, the folks at McCrady's are harvesting their first crop of early summer vegetables.

Growing their own also allows Beard-nominated chef Sean Brock a steady supply of micro greens and "baby" vegetables for his menu. Now harvesting peas, radishes, tomatoes, zucchini and beets.

"Growing your own" is a growing movement within the restaurant industry. Good news for farmers and eaters as well. McCrady's is located at 2 Unity Alley. For more info, call 577-0025 or click www.mccradys.com.

Carolina's, 10 Exchange St., also is part of this garden-to-plate initiative. Kensington Plantation, 60 miles north of Charleston provides executive chef Jeremiah Bacon and his team with locally grown produce.
