Young earns victory

Faces 2nd newcomer in general election

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Rep. Annette Young handily defeated newcomer Tara Bussjager in the Republican primary race for Dorchester County's state House District 98 on Tuesday, receiving 65 percent of the votes with all 18 precincts reporting, according to unofficial results.

"I feel wonderful," Young said. "I'm tired, you know. It's been a lot of door-to-door, and it's been hot. I've lost 10 pounds."

She said the votes show constituents understand her loyalty to them. "I want to thank all the voters in District 98 for having the confidence in me to put me back in," said Young, who has held the office for 17 consecutive years.

She said she will continue to be there for her constituents. Her priorities are redesigning the state's education funding formula and fighting to get state funding for Dorchester County infrastructure, she said.

Young is a Summerville resident and the owner of a rental property management company.

She'll face another newcomer in the Nov. 4 election, Democrat Jeff Young, a Summerville resident and Mount Pleasant firefighter. The two candidates are not related.
