SUMMERVILLE — A promise to curb growth around Summerville was central in two Dorchester County Council races but brought home a victory in only one of them. Incumbent Richard Rosebrock, a supporter of the county's moratorium on residential developments, held his District 5 seat against Buzzy Charpia, a contractor who also challenged Rosebrock in 2004. Rosebrock, who has been on council since 1992, won the Republican primary and has no Democratic opposition in the Nov. 4 election. He got 62 percent of the votes in unofficial results, with all precincts and absentee ballots counted. "Growth is still the big problem in Dorchester County," Rosebrock said. "I think most people want to manage the growth." But Fred Luxmore, an engineering support-group manager at Bosch who also ran on a platform of controlling growth, lost his chance for the District 6 seat to former County Council Chairman Bill Hearn. Hearn, a real estate attorney who was on council from 1995 to 2002, called the moratorium "a formula for disaster." He got almost 62 percent of the votes in the unofficial tally. "Growth is important, and it's still something we have to deal with," Hearn said Tuesday night. "But people are starting to feel concerned about jobs." No Mr. Rosebrock. Most people want their county council to take their issues seriously.
South Carolina does love its career politicians.

Typical. The general election battle will be between two people who BOTH have ties to the real estate industry. I just have to shake my head at all this.

I'm glad to see that Bill Hearn has championed in this run-off. He was a tremendous asset to our county during his previous term and I'm looking forward to good things to come!
In response to Native_Ink's post; I have no issue with real estate professionals holding public office in my county. After all - if there weren't any NEED for that profession, it wouldn't exist. Realtors are employed by the citizens of our county to represent them in purchasing and selling property. Furthermore, the majority of Realtors in our region have nothing to do with unbridled growth - their main focus is resales rather than new construction. No, I'm not a Realtor!

I have no problem with realtors, per se. I have a couple of friends who are realtors, but let's be honest. When more than half the people running for public office are real estate, then something is up. These people have a dog in the fight when it comes to growth. It's that simple. I might like hanging out with my realtor friends, but would I want them deciding whether or not a new condo complex goes up in my neighborhood. Hell no!

I do agree that there should never be a majority on any public office. That's part of the reason I did not want Luxmore in that seat. Having 3 councilman working at the same company brought up a lot of concern with me.
