The Post and Courier
L.C. Knight
After 20 years, it appears that Dorchester County will once again have a Knight for a sheriff.
L.C. Knight, a former magistrate and a SLED agent for nearly 30 years, beat Folly Beach Public Safety Director Terry Boatwright in the Republican primary for Dorchester County sheriff. According to unofficial results, Knight had 53 percent of the vote to Boatwright’s 47 percent.
Because there is no Democrat running, Knight is virtually assured of being elected sheriff in November.
"It's been a long, hard battle. We had a lot of wonderful supporters who worked hard for us," Knight said Tuesday evening. "We're looking forward to January to take office and start implementing the changes that we need in Dorchester County."
Boatwright and Knight ran campaigns focused on improving service and restoring confidence in the beleaguered sheriff's office. Earlier this year, an audit found that more than $360,000 was missing from a jail fund over a period of seven years, money that was allegedly embezzled by a jail employee.
In April, the sheriff's office was stung by the arrest of state Sen. Randy Scott on DUI charges. Scott claimed the arrest was politically motivated.
Much consternation ensued.
Sheriff Ray Nash opted against running for re-election, listing Boatwright's interest in the job as a mitigating factor in his decision. Boatwright and Knight had challenged Nash before.
"We fought a hard fight, worked hard day and night, and we did it with honor and integrity," Boatwright said. "I'm very proud of our efforts. We made significant headway in four months. It was a typical David and Goliath scenario."
In his campaign, Knight talked about improving customer service and raising pay for deputies and other employees while getting a tighter hold on the department's budget. He talked of improving response times in a county blessed, or plagued, with explosive growth.
Knight may have been helped by his lifetime residence in the community and by his family name. His father, Carl Knight, was sheriff in Dorchester County from 1960 to 1988. Party officials suspected that some Democrats may have crossed over to vote for Knight.

To all Dorchester County citizens. You are going back in time to the days of "bubbaism". Boss Hogg 2 is going to start off where his father "Boss Hogg 1" left off..The time when if you aint kenfolk you aint S1#t..In the beginning you will see drug bust, shine bust, pot bust. The deputies will get a small raise, then nothing after that.He will change uniforms,Badges, patrol car graphics and all of this at the Dorchester County tax payers expense..If you want to see what was the Dorchester County Sheriff's office back in the day of Boss Hogg 1 when he ran it and what it will be like with Boss Hogg 2, Go the Youtube.com type in White lighting go to Only scared of 2 things.. You elected him and now you got him........

I thought the same thing SCPDBLUE. I remember the good ole boy days in Dorchester county. Nash did stop that even though he had his own issues. Dorchester County you got what you wanted good luck with that. They voted Mike Rose in too? Man you people have very short memories.

Take heart in knowing that you can start the process of unseating these people TODAY if they do not meet your expectations. It is time we demanded more from our politicians than lip service. Keep the faith, friends.

Don't say all "Dorchester County" residents because obviously "all" didn't vote for that scenario!
The PC's comments that Democrats crossed the line to vote is all too true. I watched as folks walked up to vote and when asked what party affiliation they said 'We just want to vote for LC Knight."
I'll give him his chance to prove the detractors wrong - for a while!!

And yes Moonie we voted in Rose! It was a dang site better than Scotch. Ol Scptt's character continued to show when he got the beat down too. He could do nothing but talk about and blame Nash instead of looking at himself. I guess he forgot that "the Senate ain't the best job in the world anyhow!" It was pretty said seeing Scott stoop to aligning himself with Andre Bauer to get votes in his last mailer - Andre Bauer - you gotta be kidding. Sanford wasn't about to endorse another rubber stamp Democrat in Republicans clothing in Scott!

Dorchester County circa 1975 here we come. You'll now see Capt Scooter, Lt Cooter and Sgt Bubba all rolling in to work with their 48 in waists, coffee mugs with the confederate flag and talkin about how good things are now...ATTN Randy Scott: You are now legal to drink and drive again in your newly found free time.

Boatright says he fought w/ honor and integrity. Let's see if he can walk the walk now and step down as Folly director of public safety. The concensus on folly is that WE do not want someone who choses to look for another job while being empolyed here. Campaigning while on the job with our vehicle and driving back and forth from St George. FOLLY DESERVES A FULLTIME COMMITTMENT FROM OUR CHIEF OF POLICE! We have several excellent men such as Jimmy Couch to replace this appointee from Mayor Beckman.(Thxs for the 2nd handsmoke)Don't let the bridge hit you on the way out! Show some class Boatright or are you gonna hang around until retirement? Integrity what would Jesus do Terry?

Dorchester County has been set back 20 years. I guess I need to put one of those "Elect LC Knight" stickers on my car so I can benefit from our new sheriff.
And we wonder why everyone views us as dumb rednecks. Last noghts vote only goes to validate this view. God help us.

I would like to thank all of the Dorchester County people who voted for LC. Through all of the lies and mud slinging, truth prevailed. For those of you who did not vote for him why not give him a chance to prove himself before you start bashing him. LC is a very kind, caring and honest man. A great move for DCSO!!!

raregar67 - I hope we got it right too. I'm not sure what you meant by the Randy Scott comment. I'm sure that case will go back to trial. Regarding Ray Nash, I think he made some very poor decisions on who he hired and trusted. But don't be surprised if in Scotts re-trial you see some calls made the evening of his arrest from DCSD to one Mike Rose. We'll see...

Yeah, Nash was SOOOO GREAT! My car was stolen, I called the Sheriff's office and waited - 2 hours; I called back and waited ANOTHER hour. Finally, a deputy CALLED me to take a report over the phone and to tell me pick up the report in 3 days.
Thanks for making me feel safe!
That really made me want to vote for one of his buddies.

Here we go again Dorchester County.....a few years ago when Stanley Tucker was voted out I thought we were going to start to see the light. But of course, there are alot of new Summerville residents that haven't been around during his father's "reign". And with Mike Rose over Randy Scott, I guess that one was the lesser of two evils. But like someone posted, R. Scott has someone else to call (besides his wife) when he gets popped again.

I don't live in Dorchester County, so I did not take part in this particular vote. I did, however, see one of the polling places on the TV news. The booths appeared to be spaced at about the same distance apart as most other voting booths. I don't think the balloting was any closer than any where else.

There are a few bad apples in most barrels, so don't condemn them all. Dorchester County Sherriff's office has alot of work to do with the amount of growth in the area. The amount of new young delinquents (bad apples) in the neighborhood (that I have already seen walking the streets late at night while they are being unsupervised by their parents) when before the growth explosion there used to be none; will soon be keeping them busy. When are parents going to realize that 10 pm at night is not a good time for your 14 or 15 yr old son or daughter to go over to someones house to visit? Even in the summertime, other people still have to work. Have some common sense! As far as delinguents coming onto my property...
I HAVE ROTTWEILERS. COME IN AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Coldbeer its called sarcasm. Look up the definition if necessary.
charlene- I think it is funny that a town named after the new sheriff's family is in such disarray. Probably just a view of things to come for the entire county.
Where can I get one of those stickers on my car. I need to reap the benefits of last nights results eventhough my last name is not Knight.
Posted by forget on June 11, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)
charlene - Meth is a NATIONWIDE problem, not just Dorchester Cnty, the nation on a whole can't get a grip on it, Haven Oaks has been a cesspool since WAY before Nash was in office, and the racetrack area has been in need of a "clean up" for over 20 years. The people that live near the old racetrack need to want to clean up their neighborhoods themselves. Nash inherited problems from the previous "tenants" of the Sheriff's office. Then add that to the uncontrolled growth of the area, very limited funds, etc., and the "good ol' boys" left on the council that want one of their own in the office. You then get Dorchester County 2008.

Instead you get personal; BRILLIANT!

charlene - law enforcement can only do so much. The residents have to do their share. The property owners have to do their share. Then law enforcement can do their's. Also, what happens after these people are arrested? They're let right back out again. How many times have we read about someone out on bond committing another crime? So, most of time law enforcement is stuck in a vicious circle of arresting then rearresting the same offenders. In the same places. Then not let us get started on the "no snitch" crap we have right now. That goes right back to residents doing their share. Basically, there isn't a sheriff or police chief around that is allowed to do their job effectivly. And not to open a whole new can of worms, they now have to deal with illegals that they're basically not "allowed" to do anything with. They're arrested under one name today, let go, and arrested under a different name next month. All in all, it's a pretty thankless job.

Charlene68,I told you before and I will tell you again, and NO i'am not a bad cop and I'am not a bad citizen, just someone who has see what putting Good ole boys in office where they have power, the sheriffs office is the worst. I agree with you that LC would know where the Drugs and moonshine stills are at in Dorchester county, just like his daddy "Boss Hogg" Knight would just happen to find pot fields and shine just before re-election,then after winning re-election non were to be found, until next election.HHHhhhmmmmm,Makes one wonder doesnt it.AGAIN Just go to Youtube.com Type in White Lighting,LOOK FOR: Only scared of 2 things. watch it and then ask yourself do we want this type of LE back in Dorchester County. The return of "This is my county boy".No thanks....I feel sorry for the deputies who want to serve but will have to do the PC thing because LC knows everybody and they will have to be careful who they pull over and deal with ,or they will be in J.C. Thomas's sorry I mean L.C.Knights office. But there is something good about this election,The deputies will get to wear mirror sungasses and they can put the rebel flag plates back on their patrol cars and a token for the black deputies they can patrol the RIDGE and other areas out of sight. But must call the sheriff before they go on the property of a Knight,Limehouse,Tucker or Sweat and must be careful around the areas of the Edisto and Givens.

Can you take down all those damned signs now?!
Posted by ColdBeer on June 11, 2008 at 2:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Actually ForPnC, you can't. You can get in trouble. The candidate is responsible for ensuring they are taken down no later than 15 days after the date of the election (Berkeley County. I haven't researched the other counties but would imagine Dorchester has similar controls). I used to pull the signs down at the entrance to my subdivision because they may the area look trashy. When I finally got around to reading the Berkeley County Sign Control ordinance, I found I it was not legal for me to pull them down.
http://www.co.berkeley.sc.us/departments...
Most of the non-political signs that you see do not meet the ordinance requirements, and therefore are illegal, but we, as citizens, still can't take them down. I sent an e-mail to the Berkeley County Council asking why the ordinance was not enforced and if it could be changed, allowing citizens to take down illegal signs... no answer. It's been about 4 months.
Although I no longer take the signs down, others in my subdivision picked up where I left off. We actually made it through this entire primary season with no signs at our entrance :)

Good for L.C! Nash did not resign from the race the truth until the truth about the missing money came to light. He called it a witch hunt. Then suddenly he discovers he has enough time in as a state employee to retire. Nice Ray, nice. It's just too bad a little more truth didn't come to light. Equal rights. Justice for all. More people have learned to plead the fifth because you chose to turn your head away from the slanderous lies you allowed certain employees to get away with. Many lawyers backed Knight just for that reason. If more people had cared to learn about L.C. Knight himself instead of comparing him to past generations it would have been a landslide victory! Show them what truth is L.C. Congratulations!

Charlene68,Come on show all of us the proof and not any hearsay.I think you are just blowing smoke.
What grounds do you have to call Nash sissified? If you knew him,you would know different.Nash is in great condition, physically and mental. He has several black belts and many other awards in martial arts.If you only knew how many crimnals he has personally chased and tackled them down instead of using a fast gun.Can you say that LC could chase anyone down?I don't think so.Wonder how Knight will pass the physical testing that he will have to go through now that he is the elected sheriff.Or,does he have enough clout to bypass the Police academy testing that is equired?
Another thought, only those that voted have the real right to complain now.

Carl Knight was considered a progressive Sheriff for his time. After all, his predecessor (Jessen) was the KKK's candidate. Once Carl Knight became Sheriff, there was never another lynching in Dorchester County.
Yes, Carl Knight was from the old school, but he brought Dorchester County into the 20th Century 60 years "too late." He hired the first black law enforcement officer in 20th Century Dorchester County (Major Ernest Moultrie). Did Carl Knight help his friends from time to time? You bet he did. But no more so than any other Sheriff in the South in the 1960s and 70s. Was he the boss of Dorchester County? You bet he was. But, he was a "benevolent dictator" who truly loved his community and was a friend to every one who did not cross him.
Has Dorchester County changed a lot since the Carl Knight era? A whole lot, some for the good, some for the worse. But here's the thing: L.C. Knight is not Carl Knight. He is a highly trained professional light-years more qualified to be Sheriff than any of his three predecessors (Woodberry, Southerland, Nash) were at the the time they took office.
It is a new day in Dorchester County. No more religious cults (Bill Gothard, The Way, etc.). No more for-profit national and international consulting on "character training" - as if you could possibly teach someone to be of good character. Instead, just "home-grown" professional law enforcement.
SCPDBlue and other nay-sayers: Get over yourselves. Your candidate lost. He can stop pretending to live in St. George now. He can start looking for a job now because he is about to be shown the door in Folly Beach where the Mayor and City Council were "praying" he would win.

Knightsville,I know LC won and terry lost its not about that its about the Goodol boy politics. The only reason major Moultrie was hired was becouse of his race, also he knows everybody in the black community of Dorchester county and that means votes for boss hogg,Major Moultrie is a fine man, know him myself, fine officer but he knew what it took to be employed with boss hogg,Bumper stickers instead of tickets, ride home for drunk councel members instead of the drunk tank in Summerville.Which shine maker was going to "take one for the team" during election time,Whos pot field was go to be found of and of Course no one knew whos it was.Yes,Carl Knight was a good friend to everyone whos name was Limehouse,Tucker,Grooms,Sweat and of course Knight. You are right Dorchester has changed since Carl's era.I also agree that some good and some bad. But the people of Dorchester County who knew Boss Hogg do not want to be reminded that again in 2008 that THIS IS MY COUNTY BOY.The people of the county deserve better if not Boatright then someelse besides J.C. Thomas,sorry,L.C. Knight. To the deputies of the DCSO when L.C. does his first inspection of the troops Make sure you have two things on you (1) Mirror Sunglasses & (2) L.C. Knight bumper stickers,Ticket book is optional.Good Luck your going to need it.

It's J.C. Connors not J.C. Thomas,Sheriff of Bogan County,Arkansas. "I'm the law,I don't know you, but I've got my eye on you,This my county,Boy"...The past comes back to Dorchester County again...

To SCPDBLUE. Please stop typing and start packing. You must feel great in your attempt to degrade Carl Knight. So lets tell the Dorchester county citizens about this so call Boss Hog. Facts not the nonsense you write about. Carl Knight was elected sheriff and re-elected 6 times by the citizens of Dorchester county. He was never accused of any wrong doings, never had a audit that indicated funds were missing. Had a open door policy and would meet with any citizen that needed his help. Unlike you what I have wrote is true. You should wash off that yellow stripe down the middle of your back and tell the good citizens of Dorchester county what you have done for this county. I'm sure 1 second won't interfere with your crying or complainting.

It truly scares me to see how many people believe that Nash doesn't work on the good ole boy system. I see he has been handing out the free coolaid to more then just his employees. It is obvious that Dorchester County is looking for positive change and that would be why LC Knight will become sheriff in January. For those of you who are not Knight supporters, I would hope that you would know it is not nice to be a sore looser. If you truly feel that the county is in danger then may I suggest relocation.

True he was elected and re-elected 6 times by the citizens of Dorchester county. true he was never accused of any wrong doings because he was Boss Hogg and had enuff on just about everybody that was somebody in Dorchester county.True he never had an audit because he knew everyone on county counsel and they knew him and he had a blocker in Columbia. The fox(Carl) controling the hen house(County Counsel).True Carl had a open door policy,But what can I do for you was followed by what can you do for me? And to be so blind about the pot fields and shine stills before election and handing out bumper stickers by patrol deputies on duty, come on get a grip. By your handle you must be a knight so you would have an interest in this and would not want to bring any of the past to the future.Like I said before I'am not for or against Nash but I see the DCSO going back in time to a day when things were kept quiet because of fear not respect. We will see if L.C. can make the DDSO better. We'll be on the inside looking out, sayin Yes sirrr Sheriff sirrrr,Mighty hot out side sirrr.Yes I did get my mirror sunglasses sir,Thank you kindly sirrr, they mighty nice boss....So we will see if L.C. can turn the DCSO from the past and move it into the future.A future of respect not fear.
