Contrary to his campaign slogan, Charleston County Council candidate Joey Douan didn’t “Git-R-Done” Tuesday.
Newcomer Mark Peper defeated him with 64 percent of the vote in the Republican primary race for the District 7 County Council seat.
Peper will face incumbent Colleen Condon, who is a Democrat, in the November election.
Peper said this marked his first political run and he’s “humbled by the support everybody has shown."
“It just goes to show you that if you work hard, you can get great results,” he said.
Peper, 29, a local attorney and former Charleston County Park and Recreation Commissioner, said he is adamantly against raising county taxes.
Key issues for him include alleviating traffic on West Ashley’s congested arteries, controlling growth and completing the controversial Mark Clark Expressway project.
Douan couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday night.
In the Republican primary race for the District 6 seat, incumbent Curtis Bostic brought in 59 percent of the vote and beat Nancy Cook, who’s a member of the Charleston County School Board.
Bostic will now face Democrat Vic Rawl in the November election.
Bostic said Tuesday he was thankful for the win. “The people of Charleston are a gracious lot,” he said.
If Bostic wins in November, it will mark his third term on County Council.
He said he will continue to fight against raising taxes and to make sure county budgets reflect county government running efficiently.
He said he’d continue pushing for economic development, heightened public safety, more collaborative tri-county waste disposal initiatives, controlled growth and preservation of Charleston’s natural beauty.
"we have to start dealing with traffic congestion and infrastructure needs” such as on-ramps and road-widening projects, he said.
Cook said she simply wanted to congratulate her opponent and thank her supporters.
She also said she’s not planning another run for her school board seat.
