Man found dead on couch

Charleston County Sheriff's Office crime-scene workers and detectives investigate a slaying at a home Monday on James Island.
Belton
To offer tips
Anyone with information in the shooting death of Reggie Belton (right) should call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
A 30-year-old man was found dead in a James Island duplex early Monday with a gunshot wound to his head, Chief Deputy Coroner Judy Koelpin said. Neighbors reported hearing gunfire at the end of a cul-de-sac off Fort Johnson Road near Camp Road. Charleston County sheriff's deputies responded at 4:15 a.m. and found the front door ajar. They discovered Reggie Belton dead on a couch. Detectives haven't identified any suspects in the apparent homicide, sheriff's Lt. Kevin Whited said. Family members who lived in the homes clustered around the dirt road and watched as deputies worked at the scene through the morning. "He looked out for his family," said cousin Jennifer Prioleau, seated with somber relatives in the shade of a giant live oak tree. "He was straightforward all the time. He spoke his mind." Another cousin who declined to give his name said Belton had two children. Belton has a criminal record dating to 1995. His convictions include assault with intent to kill, aggravated assault, possession of a stolen pistol, cocaine possession, resisting arrest, failure to stop for blue lights and driving with a suspended license.

Play with fire and you will get burnt. NAACP another young black man killed in a violent act. Still working on that flag issue though, right?
Very unfortunate.

Can't Y'all read?! The reporter wrote:
""He looked out for his family," said cousin Jennifer Prioleau, seated with somber relatives in the shade of a giant live oak tree."
Now who can argue with that? Sure the man has a record stretching halfway across the Atlantic but maybe there's a good explanation. Maybe the "assault with intent to kill" was for someone who broke into his home and the "aggravated assault" was for refusing to be carjacked with a baby in back seat. Maybe the "possession of a stolen pistol" charge was as innocent as "I didn't know it was stolen..." and the "cocaine possession" was because he just caught his nephew trying to snort it and wanted to prevent that.
As far as the other convictions, those are easy. "Resisting arrest", "failure to stop for blue lights", and "driving with a suspended license"...He had to get milk for the baby and nobody else was around. OBVIOUSLY a case of police brutality...
See, he was a family man, you naysayers, you... :)

I've noticed something with the PnC...
...when a family member of a victim of a murder speaks to the PnC, and someone says something along the lines of "S/he was family oriented.." "S/he kept to her/himself..", in the very next paragraph, they do a background check on them. Talk about grinding salt in the wound! Kinda like saying (to me) "They had a messed up record, oh well, they're no longer here to contaminate the streets.."
JMO
My condolences and prayers to the family of the deceased.

This story repeats itself over and over again, with the same background on the victim(s). It’s becoming so routine that I probably won’t read another one unless the headline grabs my attention, something like “couch found under dead man”.

I've sat and spent some time trying to figure out if there is an answer to this type of thing. I'm fond of saying "Quit bitching and start fixing" so I try and follow my own advice. It's difficult in this case. What's the answer? Do you round up ALL of the young men in high crime areas and ask "WTF?" "Why?" "What do we need to do to fix the problem?" "What do you need to get your life in order?"
My fear is that most of the answers would be simply "Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie".
It's a catch 22. I feel that the majority of these problems are due to poor parenting and you can't fix poor parenting until you develop some good parents.
Another life ruined by a life of crime. I'm sure this man had people that loved him and counted on him, in one way or another. I feel sorry for their loss. This situation just repeats itself over and over.

Are you suggesting this is improper reporting? It does show the hyprocricy (sp) in relatives peeing on our shoes and assuring us it's only raining as they comment. I don't know about sympathy for the family but I do know his criminal rap sheet has ended.

Tammie I have noticed that too. Do we have facts to show that maybe he went the right path since his record? Ever notice how that it is never in here when they do. I also wonder how many who post here do DRUGS and act al high and mighty. I know when I was young I was no angel. I did my share.
We have no facts YET that this was a drug deal gone badly. BUT some in here will ASS u ME it is.
My condolences to the family

In my personal opinion, YEP. I'm not expecting anyone who comments in this section to be sympathetic, that's not what this comment section is for. Plus, I dont doubt that dude's rap sheet was probably as long as my arm. I just think it's hypocritical. 'Tis all.

Granny (good morning btw), you hit the nail on the head. I've noticed that with a lot of people who get killed who happened to have records. Yes, they could have made better choices but you just never know that their bad choices they made in the past may have helped shape a more promising future for them. In this case, his record could date back to 1995 but he could have cleaned it up by...let's hypothetically say...2001. *shrug* You just never know. He very well may be been a man who genuinely loved his family, etc. We'll never know.

I haven't read the posts yet, but here goes!
Another story about a black man dead, watch the posters come out.
Another horse to beat in the head, there will be so much to say, no doubt.
On the threads about the 3 white boys very few posts could be seen.
I am sure that this story will yield high posts; maybe 100 or somewhere between.
Yeah, sure they posted about the "red necks" and how they were so dumb.
But never did they lump a whole race together, they saw all were not represented by one.
I am sure someone will come and ask "where is the NAACP?"
When will they learn they don't "rep" all blacks and they definitely don't speak for me.
I'm sure there will be a crack at Obama and how he has lost a vote; this one always cracks me up.
Because chances are this guy wouldn't have voted anyway had his time not been up.
Then a poster will mock how the young man's family will say he was a good boy.
And they will be happy that this guy is dead, "one less criminal on the street, OH JOY!"
A family member may come on board and say stop talking you don't know him.
A poster will tell her not to read the posts and that he was far form being a victim.
Many will say that they are tired of this mess and yet will still read and post.
It seems to me the stories like this are the ones they would avoid most.
Maybe it's me, but it just seem crazy to keep running into a brick wall.
I think I need to take a break because I am so tired of y'all!
But if this story doesn't get many hits it's because everyone is on the other board.
You know the one about the 10 year sentence for murder, all I can say is "OH LORD!"
Let me go over there and see what's being said about the jacked up sentence at best.
Or maybe I won't, maybe I'll just sit and give my poor brain a rest!

Yes, this young man had a criminal record as long as anyone on here arms can reach, but he did help his family. It may have been illegal, but it wasn't welfare.
Does that make it alright, well from some of the poster on here that always complaining about people being on welfare, you should be happy that he had his own business (not paying taxes).
I guess its my time to say, I know this young man and I am not sticking up for his crimes, but his family loves him for who he is and not what he was.
My condolence to the Bolton family. May they quickly find his murder.

I could see it being extremely distasteful if they cited his parking tickets, said he smoked pot in college or if he'd been late on child support twice. But I think when someone is murdered in a such a violent way,it's relevant that they had a violent history.Afterall,he tried to kill someone before!(could be a revenge crime)This information could help to solve the crime and definitely paints a picture.Someone who "looks out for their family" does NOT act this way.His poor children couldve been in that house and killed too! Why?Because he was some competent man/father?No.He led a life of crime. It's sad but folks lets call it like it is.He led a life a crime and paid the ultimate price.Like my parents used to say...you lay with dogs, you get fleas.

SBS920, what does the death of this young man have to do with someone voting or not voting for Obama. You are so scared that a black man will be the next President of this country you will find any reason not to vote for him, hell like your boy G.W. Bush has done such an outstanding Job.... This is a sad situation that we see to much, and granted I do think the NAACP should be worried more about this then the flag. Hell you lost the war if you want to be reminded of it everyday by looking at that flag then so be it. However, more money should be spent on prevention then on making the jails and prisons larger. We as a nation need to stop all of this foolishnes. There are still way to many of us looking at color, then at what a person can do or can not do for this country, state, and city. I love my hometown even though I no longer reside there, a lot of things have changed since I left, but I see some things have not. SBS920 whomever killed this young man was wrong, and yes this young made also broke the law, but what are you doing to make the situation better, what are you doing to stop the crime, besides hiding behind some fake screen name like a coward. I am going to pray for you as well as the victim in this case..and honestly you need it a lot more then he does.

I am so tired of these ignorant, racist ass white people getting on this site posting comments of young black men death. His death has nothing to do with his criminal record. He is still someones child, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. That's why when people decide to kill ya'll trashy behinds they do it so brutally and leave the family in distress. You are the worst people in the world and I hate white people I wish that you would just fall off the cas of the earth. Yes, he was a family oriented person. How would you know were you a member of his family? NO. So you need to shut up when you don't know what you're talking about. That's why your daughters always get killed and raped, sons all get robbed and beaten because you don't know how to come out of your mouth, Karma is abitch and everything negative that has been said about this young man will come back to haunt you!

Ok so you admit why black people kill, rape, robbed and beat white people, but why do black people keep getting killed. Explain that one to me genius

dimediva01 please hate is such a harsh word. When something like this happens to anyone no matter the race it a cruel and unkind. Some of the posters are what you call cowards on this board and believe me they would not say anything to your face. They are the type of people who "throw a rock and hide their hands". But don't hate them just pray for them. Until we as people can come together this world will continue to be crazy and mixed up.

dimediva says:That's why when people decide to kill ya'll trashy behinds they do it so brutally and leave the family in distress.
Key word she said PEOPLE. Okay genius tell me how you came up with blacks killing whites from this statment. There are black on black crimes, white on white crimes. Sounds like you are the racists. You are no different from her. She just expressed herself and she is entitled. Have you ever stop to think that sometimes family members are looking at what we post and when all the post are bad mouthing a family member or friends they retaliate by saying the first thing that comes to mind.

Belton has a criminal record dating to 1995. His convictions include assault with intent to kill, aggravated assault, possession of a stolen pistol, cocaine possession, resisting arrest, failure to stop for blue lights and driving with a suspended license.
Where in this article that it states his criminal activity was from the past. It said his criminal record dates back to 1995. Why did the P&C feel the need to include this information about him in this article. Did they go out of there way to find it. Did the investigating police offer it up. I think the family should be asking that, instead blaming people for commenting on it.

I feel this behavior is created by all of us. By social programs that give enough to survive but take away all hope of getting ahead. So when kids turn to adults and find out they can have that car, gun, girl etc by selling drugs and possible getting killed over it, it is a a acceptable risk to these guys. But it's a ruff playing field with so many participants. We need to quit the social programs and give people a sense of pride again.
