Two men accused of breaking in are now wanted for breaking out of the Charleston County Detention Center, while another man is considered an escapee for not returning after his work release shift. David Earl Evans, 39, and David James Speight, 30, were missing Saturday after working a shift in the main detention center's kitchen, said Chief Deputy Mitch Lucas, the county jail administrator. Evans and Speight, both being held on separate second-degree burglary charges, left the main kitchen with 24 other inmates around 10:30 p.m. Saturday to return to the detention center's work camp building where they were housed. About 90 minutes later during a routine count at the camp, jailers noticed that Evans and Speight were gone. Lucas suspects that the men escaped after the short trip between the main campus and the work camp building. Evans and Speight were accounted for as they left the main building with nine other inmates in one van. A second van took 15 other inmates on the same trip. While the buildings are secure, the pathways between buildings on the campus are not. Evans and Speight's escape is the detention center's second since 1994, Lucas said. In both cases, human error was to blame. Lucas said officers failed to follow at least three policies Saturday, which led to the men's escape. Lucas declined to describe the policies or exactly how the men got away for security reasons. An internal investigation and security review is being conducted, Lucas said, and the officers involved could be punished if warranted. "At this point we don't believe that this is anything other than human error," he said. Lucas said the officers were good employees. "It's just we hire humans and sometimes humans make mistakes," he said. A third man, Julius Clinton Barfield, 35, also is considered an escapee because he left the work release facility Saturday and did not return after a shift at an area auto paint shop. Lucas said there was nothing indicating that Barfield's absence and the escape of the other two men were related. Barfield had been living at the work release facility since October 2007 on a contempt of court charge because he failed to pay child support, a civil matter. Escape is considered a crime. Escapes from the work release facility are more common because the inmates come and go on their own, Lucas said. If found guilty of escape, each man could serve up to 10 years in prison. Evans is described as a white male standing 6 feet tall. Speight is described as a white male standing 6 feet 2 inches tall. Barfield of North Charleston is described as a white male standing 5 feet 8 inches tall. Anyone with information on the men should call CrimeStoppers at 554-1111.

considering that the jail has three times as many inmates as it was built to house, that budget cuts make it hard to obtain and maintain adequate staff, that working in a jail is a thankless job, I am suprised this has not happened before. I would not want to work in that environment

G. Gordon Liddy and other very high profile people who have served prison time maintain correctional officers are really at the bottom of the pecking order when it comes to I.Q. and awareness. Who else would CHOOSE to spend 8 hours a day (minimum) behind barbed wire, with inmates desperate to get out. Watch Lockup on MSNBC sometime and listen to the guards talk, their either on an ego trip or revealing their main goal is to go home alive at the end of their shifts. Great vocational goals heh?

It is such a pleasant thought to know that these savory looking characters are on the loose.
What idiots! Now, they can look forward to many more years behind bars. (hopefully)

Thomas -
I don't think they allow child molesters and rapists in the work camp. Nor do I think there were cuffs and chains involved. These guys are basically "trustees". They trust them to come back everyday after they are finished working. They allow them to work so that they can continue to benefit society and their families. Otherwise we (taxpayers) have to support their families while they sit in jail. Charleston County is fortunate to have very few problems with people dipping out from the work release program.
I don't care for the work release program myself. I think jail should be jail. You sit and do your time. Someone should come by your cell once a day and remind you exactly why you are there :)
ps: You usually make pretty good points, but why do you come across as so anti-government and anti-law enforcement?

"Larry, Moe and Curly!"
Could not have said it better myself! However, for those of you who want to condemn the guards and officers, remember these men are "trustees". They are in a minimal risk facility. All these 3 guys did was broadcast there on mentality level!

"According to the Post and Courier report on the jail, people are packed like sardines and have to sit, stand, and sleep in body waste."
Well I guess if you don't want to experience that kind of environment, don't break the law.

ysillyme,
Your assertion that officer are the lowest IQ and on power trips is ridiculous. I have worked in that same jail and there are a substantial number of people that work there that are very intelligent. They choose to be there for a multitude of reasons of which you may or may not understand. Some use that as a stepping stone into law enforcement others use it as a way to get great benefits and police retirement. I really enjoyed the team atmosphere and the camaraderie that goes with working in that environment. Unless you have been there please do NOT make assertions about power trips, ego, or blanket intelligence of those under appreciated people. As for going home alive...isn't that the goal for everyone?

People like this also make me realize that perhaps mandatory sterilization programs aren't such a bad idea.

Site advisors~
there was no call for granny to lower the bar on the story. Seems if she has 6 grand she would know better, apparently not. Smut is smut, if granny is male/female it added nothing.
