To offer tips
The Highway Patrol is asking the person driving the car that hit Tyler Capers to surrender by calling troopers at 953-6010 or by going to the trooper office at 8740 North Park Blvd., North Charleston, near Rivers Avenue and Otranto Road. In Tyler's death, troopers are seeking tips about either a dark Dodge Neon sedan or a GMC Jimmy with front-end damage. In the case of two brothers struck by a truck near Cottageville, troopers are looking for a red Ford pickup truck with the tailgate hanging loose. The driver is described as a white man about age 50 with gray hair and heavily tattooed arms. To provide information about either case, call the S.C. Highway Patrol at 953-6010 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
COTTAGEVILLE — For the second time in a week, a Lowcountry motorist struck a child in the street and kept on going. The most recent incident happened Saturday afternoon near Cottageville, where two brothers on bicycles were hit by a red Ford pickup truck that was making a getaway after a police chase, authorities said. Fortunately, the brothers did not appear to be seriously injured. No arrest was made by Saturday in the death of 9-year-old Tyler Capers, who was struck and killed by an automobile Wednesday night on Ladson Road. State troopers are now looking for two vehicles wanted in the unrelated accidents. Cottageville police set up a driver's license checkpoint about noon Saturday on Pierce Road. When a pickup truck got to the check point, it suddenly took off, said Cottageville Police Chief Paul Haase. An officer chased the truck to Adams Road, which is paved but eventually becomes a dirt road. Haase said that when the chase reached Van Dyke Road, the officer couldn't see because of the dust kicked up by the truck, and he crashed into a wooded area. He was uninjured. "My officer lost them in the dust," the chief said. Shortly after, the pickup truck was traveling nearby along Adams Road when it struck from behind two brothers who were riding their bicycles, Colleton County Fire Rescue Chief Barry McRoy said. He said the impact knocked both boys off their bikes and into the woods. S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said the brothers were ages 11 and 13. They suffered cuts and bruises. Their injuries did not appear to be life threatening, but they were taken to Colleton Regional Medical Center in Walterboro to be checked, McRoy said. The pickup was a red, older-model Ford with the tailgate hanging loose. The driver was described as white, about 50 years old with gray hair and heavily tattooed arms, Beres said. Meanwhile, troopers continued Saturday to investigate leads called into Crime Stoppers about Capers death, Beres said. The vehicle in that accident also did not stop. Capers was an A and B honor roll student at Oakbrook Elementary School. He died of a cervical spine fracture. In that case, troopers are asking people to look for a dark Dodge Neon sedan or a GMC Jimmy with front-end damage.

Absolutely no comparison except both were a hit and run.
One shouldn't have been out at 10pm but that doesn't mean he had to die by a hit and run coward.
I just hope they find these criminals in both cases and bring them to a swift harsh justice. Maybe they can leave the culprits with the family for about 20 minutes. That'll be long enough for swift justice.

I am just relieved that these 2 boys were not killed.
Now on to finding the menacing jerk that hit them.

I'm still confused as to how no one knows what car struck and killed the Capers boy.If he was with friends, did NO ONE see the car that hit him? This is so weird to me.I would understand if they couldnt tell whether it was a blue or black neon. But a big SUV or a neon.So many unanswered questions here.I hope they find both drivers soon.

I think there many difference between the two stories. These children 11 & 13 where on an isolated dirt road in the middle of the day and the other 9 yr old child was along a 4 lane highway at 10 something at night. At least the vehicle and the person was identified here where no one seems to have a clue in the Capers hit and run. I too hope but drivers are caught. Seems there may be more chance of success with this one.

Glad the two boys are okay, a scary thing to have happen. Was the police chase worth this? Just asking. Sometimes I think the police chases are not worth the price paid.

Suzie,
I doubt the officers knew two kids would be riding bikes on this dirt road. Second, this guy took off for reason, and these check point are set up for just this reason. Would it have been best if the police did nothing at all? Maybe more police in action is needed? They may even run across the veichle that struck the 9 years old. This could have been that very same vehicle since no one seems to realy know what kind of vehicle struck that child..

When Police follow suit usually adrinalin takes over and then carelessness. Atleast the 2 kids are alright.
