Collins gets go-ahead as candidate

Dorchester County GOP protests petition numbers

The Post and Courier

Bill Collins

The State Election Commission said Bill Collins has enough signatures to put his name on the November ballot as an independent Senate candidate in District 38.

The commission ruled Friday that Collins collected 4,038 valid signature out of the 4,696 he turned in. He needed 3,197 to qualify as a candidate.

"I am obviously very happy with the Election Commission's decision and feel that it is proof that the grass roots effort was successful and that people want another choice on the ballot for District 38," Collins said.

As soon as the Election Commission certified the count, the Dorchester County Republican Party filed a protest, as Chairman Arthur Bryngelson had suggested it might do.

In a letter to the Dorchester County Board of Elections and Registration, Bryngelson took issue with the numbering on the petition, claiming "there appears to be several instances where signatures cannot be read, many of the signatures are in the same handwriting, signatures at wrong locations on the petitions, names crossed, power of attorney claimed, some signatures are duplicates or triplicates or no signature at all."

Collins said the protest takes away the rights of the people who signed his petition.

"I'm really not surprised that Arthur Bryngelson and Mike Rose are going to protest it," Collins said.

Collins started his petition drive in June, shortly after former state Sen. Mike Rose defeated Sen. Randy Scott in the Republican primary. The Democrats did not field a candidate.

This is good news for the voters who were put to the test on June 10th of voting for a sitting Senator facing a DUI charge or an ousted former Senator with lots of baggage. No one could have predicted the DUI & its effect on the primary which was won by only 500+votes out of 13000 cast. With no democrat on the ballot, this gives voters the opportunity to have a choice. Now voters can choose between a former ousted Senator or a new face to politics.

As a 21 year resident of Metro Ladson, I'm pleased to have another choice.

If he collect that many valid signatures I would guess those same people would vote for him. Not sure what the exact totals were during the primary but looks like this guy has a very good chance.

I'm not on the list of signatures but I will surely vote for him.

This is the guy whom picked up the audiotapes of Randy Scott in Jail from Ray Nash as well as the PNC (possibly Terry joyce) and Released Them Before the Judge gave an opinion....

Scott's DUI case takes another turn Solicitor from Spartanburg called in Published on 05/08/08 BY DAVE MUNDAY The Post and Courier Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash said he asked 1st Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe to handle the case because of the volatile nature of the charges on both sides. "It goes back to ensuring everybody gets a fair trial," Nash said Wednesday. Scott, a longtime critic of Nash, is claiming that the arrest was a politically motivated set-up to derail his re-election bid in the Republican primary June 10. Scott is facing Mike Rose for his District 38 Senate seat. The winner of the primary will take office because there is no Democratic opposition. It also was "unprecedented" for a judge to turn over a recording from a jail telephone to the media before a trial, Joye said. Nash gave a recording of a phone call Scott made to his wife from the jail to The Post and Courier after the newspaper requested it under the Freedom of Information Act. Jock Stender, a Mount Pleasant fraud examiner, also requested and received the tapes for his own information, he said Wednesday. Circuit Judge James Williams granted Joye's motion Friday to order the newspaper and Stender not to publish the recordings until after he considered it. Over the weekend the tapes were published on two Web sites, and Williams ruled on Tuesday that the newspaper could publish the tapes because they were already public. Senator Arrested for DUI by Andy Paras PNC.Rose also questioned Scott's behavior while he was behind bars. "My greatest concern is whether he demanded special treatment to get out of jail early," Rose said. Rose later said everyone is innocent until proven guilty and that Scott will have his day in court

Rose subpoenaed for Scott's trial Primary opponent says he has 'no knowledge' of DUI arrest, case Published on 05/28/08 BY ROBERT BEHRE The Post and Courier Former state Sen. Mike Rose has been subpoenaed in the DUI trial of his June 10 primary opponent, state Sen. Randy Scott, but Rose said Tuesday that he hopes to quash the subpoena because he knows nothing about the case. "I have absolutely no knowledge, none, of the circumstances of his arrest or his guilt or innocence other than what's been in the newspapers or on television," Rose said. "This is a political ploy on Scott's part to associate me with something I'm not associated with. His campaign is based on sympathy and untruths, while mine is based on substance and truth."

So what are you saying Chris, Rose picked up these tapes..or are you saying Nash freely handed them over to the P&C. Not sure what you mean with your posts or zoomru.
Could you explain?

Posted by Johnq2 on July 27, 2008 at 5:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't know ChrisPia, once a journalist has the scoop it shouldn't be held against them for releasing it, unless it's national security or a life and death situation. I agree it was rotten the way the tapes were released though.

Just goes to show that just because someone claims to be a god fearing moral man doesn't necessarily mean it's so. Of course Nash already blew that when he let the citizens of Dorchester get ripped off to benefit his cronies and church.

He probably figured he didn't have much to lose anyway since he destroyed his political and probably his business career too. I mean who wants someone to teach about good character when they have proved repeatedly that they have none?

Maybe his double dealing will give someone the motivation when the new sheriff comes in to go through all his records with a fine tooth comb. Probably lots more dirty dealing if they look hard enough. Paybacks a mutha.

Nash had already stated he handed over the tapes under FOIA to jock stender and the Pnc..These tapes make it to the blogs before a judge can release them....wHo contacted Jock stender and why would he be informed of these tapes befre the public?
And Mike Rose did Not Know? LOok at the dates of the articles and statement. My Greatest concer statementwas in an article a day after the arrest...

Zoomru there is more on Mr.rose but I'm pressed for time now.

Sen. Rose, Miles' wife profit in phone network PYRAMID PLAN: Excel Telecommunications sales agents recruit people, offering discount phone rates. The new recruits pay a $195 fee to join, and they in turn recruit people, and so on.
Published on 08/05/95
BY ARLIE PORTER and JIM PARKER
The Post and Courier
Excel Telecommunications, a pyramid money-making plan spreading rapidly across the state, could make millionaires out of two people who promote it: state Sen. Mike Rose and Betty Miles, the wife of Secretary of State Jim Miles.

Brought to the state by a University of South Carolina basketball coach, promoted by Mrs. Miles, and spread by lawmakers and their built-in networks, Excel now reaches almost every county.

As much as one-third of the state's senators also have joined

the long-distance telephone service.

For Rose, R-Summerville, the business has become so lucrative that he no longer practices law. He travels around the country speaking at Excel recruitment training seminars.

"Rose is going to become a millionaire off of it. I'm convinced of that," said state Sen. Ernie Passailaigue, D-Charleston, who is among nearly a dozen other lawmakers Rose recruited.

Even more successful than Rose, however, is Mrs. Miles. She was recruited by Steve Newton, the former University of South Carolina basketball coach, who was her neighbor. Newton brought the service from Kentucky, where it was spread among college and high school coaches.

Mrs. Miles now makes about $17,000 a month selling Excel, and her and her husband's names are often invoked at training sessions across the state as an example of how successful someone can be selling the service.

Sales agents recruit people, offering discount phone rates. The new recruits pay a $195 fee to join, and they in turn recruit people. Then those recruits also recruit people, and so on.

A percentage of the discounts of all recruits go up to the original recruiter, called an uplink.

Miles said that at first he was against his wife signing up with Excel. But he thoroughly investigated the company, including running criminal background checks on its officers.

"Before she got into it, I looked into the question of whether my office would have oversight," he said.

"There's no doubt it is multi-level marketing (but) it's customer driven," Miles said. "It's like a general agent in the insurance business. Amway has been doing this for 35 years."

Mrs. Miles is open in her praise of Excel. "This changes people's lives," she said. She estimated there are several thousand Excel sales agents in South Carolina.

In Mrs. Miles' case, she collects 2 percent of the long-distance charges rung up by her recruits, plus 0.25 of a percent of the bills of customers lined up by the sales representatives she's recruited, and "leadership" bonuses for building up the business.

"It's a pyramid; it's not an illegal pyramid," she said.

Rose said Excel has changed his life. He was $200,000 in debt from an unsuccessful run for Congress. He faced the daily pressures and stress of running a law practice when a friend of his wife's recruited him to Excel.

That was 10 months ago. Last month he made more than $8,500, and people drive hundreds of miles to hear him speak around the country, Rose said.

"I feel it to be very rewarding personally as well as financially," he said in a telephone interview from Buffalo, N.Y., where he was conducting a seminar. "My wife says it's a gift from God."

Rose said he has recruited more than 400 people, including more than two dozen accountants, doctors, lawyers, seven state senators, school teachers, "and ordinary everyday people."

Among his recruits are Passailaigue; Sen. Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston; Sen. McKinley Washington, D-Charleston; Sen. Glen Reese, D-Spartanburg; Rep. Bill Mescher, R-Pinopolis; and Rep. Lynn Seithel, R-Charleston.

McConnell and Passailaigue said they've broken even with the service but were too busy to recruit people.

"It is an exciting opportunity but it's like any opportunity: You're not going to get rich or anything unless you work and work and work at it," McConnell said.

According to state regulators, Excel is one of more than 100 inter-exchange companies that buy long-distance time from the major suppliers and resell it to individuals and businesses.

The companies typically buy time in bulk at a reduced price, then resell it at a slightly higher rate to make a profit, said Gary E. Walsh, deputy executive director of the S.C. Public Service Commission, which regulates utilities.

What distances Excel is its multi-level marketing technique, Walsh said. The sales people are unabashed about who they solicit.

"I've been approached by friends of mine, even though they know where I work," he said.

Walsh said he gets more inquiries about Excel than any other long-distance service, from reporters and customers.

"Basically, I've been getting calls from individuals about becoming an Excel partner and whether it's legitimate," he said. "I tell them basically, from a PSC standpoint, they are certificated long-distance carriers in the state of South Carolina."

This is How they Touted excel in 1995....Now they say it's not a Pyramid...Millions were lost in Excel by Lower level people.

So cutting through all the B.S and cut and pasting what you guys are saying is here is a man who is basically selling phone cards like the kind you can get at convince store (without paying $195)and is using this as corporate experience to run for the State Senate?

By the way doesn't Vonage offer the same thing for 14.95 and it cost nothing to sign up.
