Betances extends Hickory's misery

The Post and Courier
Saturday, July 26, 2008

Dellin Betances held the Hickory Crawdads in check for seven innings and his teammates took care of the rest.

The Charleston RiverDogs defeated Hickory for the ninth straight time this season, 8-1, in front of 6,311 fans at Riley Park on Friday as Betances allowed only one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven.

"I was just trying to command my fastball and get first pitch strikes. I thought I did that the whole game," said Betances, who improved to 6-3.

Charleston (16-16 second half, 61-41 overall) staked Betances to a quick lead on Austin Romine's one-run single in the first inning, and Justin Snyder hit a one-run double in the fourth. Otherwise, Betances had to work without a lot of run support for most of his time on the mound.

"It definitely helps me to stay focused," he said.

The RiverDogs opened up the game with two out in the sixth when they loaded the bases on three walks. David Williams drove in a run after getting hit by a pitch, and Austin Krum singled up the middle for two-run double.

In the seventh, Jesus Montero nearly took the pitcher's head off with a line drive up the middle that brought in another run, and Brandon Laird added a two-run double for an 8-1 lead.

Michael Felix (4-4) lasted five innings for Hickory (11-23, 41-63) and gave up two runs on four hits and two walks.

Coming up

The RiverDogs will try to defeat the Crawdads for the 10th straight time with a 7:05 p.m. game today at Riley Park. The scheduled starters are Charleston right-hander Noel Castillo (7-5, 3.35 ERA) and Hickory righty Rafael De Los Santos (2-7, 5.22).

The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Larry Doby Newark Eagles replica jersey as part of Negro League Baseball Night. Larry LaGrande, a former member of the Indianapolis Clowns and a catcher for Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige, will be on hand to greet the public and sign autographs. So will former New York Black Yankees pitcher Clifford Layton.
