2 groups oppose nuclear permit
Friday, July 25, 2008
COLUMBIA — Two environmental groups have asked South Carolina utility regulators to withdraw approval for Duke Energy Corp. to begin work at a proposed nuclear power plant. In petitions filed Thursday, Friends of the Earth and NC Warn said the reactor design Duke plans to use in Cherokee County has not been approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They said the plan creates uncertainty about Duke's construction timetable and costs. NRC spokeswoman Ivonne Couret said Westinghouse Electric Co.'s original design for the reactor has been certified, but revisions are still being reviewed.

RW: I don't like these environmentalists either but, in this case, you may want to consider the fact that if this particular plan is approved, our electric rates will go up immediately and keep going up every year until the facility is completed. Totaling 36%.

How much of that 36% are costs do to beuracracy, unreasonable "studies" of impact on anything and everything that ever existed and on and on...

We have to have energy and the excuses keep getting lamer and lamer why we should not move forward. For those who wish to live in the third world..move to Mexico! Otherwise start drilling and proceed w/Nuclear Power as well. Who gives a flying rats #@& WHAT ENVIRONMENTALISTS THINK!! They are commies!

How much are electricity rates going to go up when there isn't enough electricity? The increase will make the rise in the price of oil/gas seem paltry. 36% is a bargain comparatively.
These enviro whackos drive up the cost of everything. They are at war with us. Nuclear is the cleanest form of energy and they are against that too.

They whine about drilling for oil and now they are whining about this. How are we going to keep up with energy demands if we don't do something? Ignore the "environmentalists".
How will building a nuclear power plant make our rates go up?
Question: What's the difference between a developer and an environmentalist? Answer: a developer wants to build a house in the woods...an environmentalist ALREADY has a house in the woods!!
Here's a great bumper sticker I saw and should apply to all "environmentalists" since they are sooo concerned for the planet.
It said, "Save the planet, kill yourself!"
I swear that seems to be what environmentalists believe.

Politicians and judges need to start giving some of these environmental groups the middle finger. I don’t want contaminated air and water either. Commons sense environmental policies are good for everyone, but that’s the key, common sense.
Nuclear power is the cleanest energy technology out there. Oil prices are sky high. Energy costs are climbing. Nuclear power is the best alternative we have right now. The religion of environmental extremists have made the nuclear power plants the Bogeyman for no factual reason whatsoever. If we want to lower energy costs we need to be practical and stop limiting ourselves because of medieval myths.

I'm an environmentalist and I'm even a member of the Sierra Club, Ocean Conservancy and the Surfrider Foundation; and I don't oppose drilling for more oil.
With offshore drilling I would prefer that we drill on land first. We know that Alaska has oil and from what I hear North Dakota does too. By drilling on land we can run the oil directly into a pipeline. If more oil is produced at home then it reduces the amount that has to be brought in by ship. In doing so this would reduce the statistical likelihood of an oil spill, it would lessen the burden placed on our seaports in terms of traffic, and it would reduce the trade imbalance. Seems very logical to me. Yes, oil is finite and drilling is only a temporary solution, but why not expand our own capacity for energy while we work to develop alternatives?
Nuclear power isn't a perfect solution, but it is a better solution than using coal. Persoanlly I wish that we could put solar panels on our roofs. Living in the sun belt we have an enormous untapped resource sitting right above us.

ICEMAN1978,
I am shocked..a Sierra Club memeber who isnt a marxist! Solar panelled cars are decades away and we need energy now.We can drill in ANWAR now and offshore. The Chinese and Russians are doing it now.The Russians are making a move at the North Pole. One thing is for certain there will come a time when the populace will no longer care what the left thinks. We have the resources and we are going to obtain them! We have no plans to live like the third world and wont be doing so. Also since fuel is hovering around $4.00 a gallon patience is running thin. The liberals who run these environmental groups could care less about what the consumer wants. All they want to do is attack capitalism and redistribute America's wealth. Nancy Pelosi refuses votes on this right now because of the defections within her party. Over 75% people surveyed want to drill. This is staggering. The democrats can no longer hide their disdain at what the population wants!

RW, I'm an environmentalist but I'm also an economist. Unlike most of my counterparts however, I believe that the two can go hand in hand. I also believe that free enterprise is the best thing for the environment in that it leads to better technology, efficiency and a more prosperous society which will have the ambition and the necessary capital to have a clean environment. The United States has the technological know-how and the ability to develop better solutions and to implement ones based on existing technology. Like you said though, it takes time, and we're facing an energy situation that requires our attention now.
They're turning it into a political issue. They know that drilling would bring prices down. The Alaska pipeline was built relatively quickly so I doubt that drilling in ANWR would take 17 years to produce results. In all likelihood it would bring prices down in less than six months since speculations would change.

Why in the ^$#^ are you a Sierra Club member? You make sense and are not a radical. You are saying what cool heads already know! Can you use your influence to get the actual Marxists the democrats, to allow us to drill? We need the resources and have outstanding technology. The platforms in the gulf never missed a beat even through two hurricanes. As an Economist they may just listen to you..being a club member as well. Everyone loves the planet...we can have our standard of living and resoureces at the same time! Thanks for your input!

RW, I like some of the other causes that they work for so it's why I still support them. The Surfrider Foundation works to improve water quality, beach access and beach preservation. Even though I disagree with them on oil drilling, to which they are aware, I agree with the other parts of what they do. I've been in contact with the upper mgmt of the Sierra Club in the past few months on this issue.
It's going to come though. We started drilling in the early 70's in a response to the embargo and they flooded the market so that drilling would no longer be profitable. This time they don't have that option as they are producing near to capacity. Oil prices will go down later in the year, but will still remain highly profitable which means the incentive to increase domestic production will remain. Our technology is also light years ahead from where it was a generation ago. I'm not the least bit concerned about oil drilling being a problem for the environment. I've lived in Norway long enough to know that when it's done properly it will work.

Aye captain..guide the Enterprize past the RomulanLibDems into the KlingonCommie empire. We'll have add warp speed to penetrate the hulls of our enemies. With you at command though I think we can pull it off. However dump Mr Sulu..I think he just married a male Klingon! Cant have such disregard for Federation protocol. He could jeopardize the whole crew with a nasty case of backdoor diplomacy and StarTrekAids. Bones's surgical skills would not be able to remove the infection!

Bone's may not be able to remove the infection; BUT by god DATA can CURE it with "ONE" vote!!

The Cherokee project was designed to deliver 2,200 Megawatts to the grid. I don't know any specs on the other project, but these anti-everything freaks can't demonstrate a better solution, they just want to deny everyone else any prospect to obtain efficient, reliable energy.
Bunch of nobodys trying to convince themselves that they're important.

rollo,
It's actually worse than that! They despise capitalism and this country. They want us to live like native tribes along the Amazon...except them of course. They would be free to live in their mansions!
