Library system to collect food

The Berkeley County Library System plans to offer Food for Fines in August and September in response to the current unemployment rate and rising gasoline prices.

Each library will accept nonperishable and non-expired food items. One can/bag/box will waive the equivalent of $1 in overdue book fines.

Each branch will take collected items to the nearest food bank in their respective area.

Juvenile Justice holds tourney

The Department of Juvenile Justice in partnership with the North Charleston Parks and Recreation Department will hold its third annual Tri-County Basketball Tournament on Aug. 9 to raise money for Low Country AIDS Services.

The tournament is free and will be held at Northwood's Gym in North Charleston from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All money generated from concession sales will be donated to fight AIDS.

ABWA awards two scholarships

Rising Clemson junior Katherine Bryant and Stratford High School graduate Danielle Pope have been announced as Marshlands Chapter of the American Business Women's Association 2008 scholarship recipients.

ABWA presents two students each year with scholarships to assist with their college educations.

ABWA meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Sunfire Bar & Grill off of Sam Rittenberg Blvd.
