Post and Courier employees offered buyouts

Staff reports
Monday, July 21, 2008

The Post and Courier today announced a voluntary separation program that will offer incentives for employees who choose to accept a buyout.

Publisher Larry Tarleton informed staffers about the program in a letter that detailed incentives including two weeks' pay for every year of service, up to a year's pay, and enhanced pension and medical benefits for employees ages 58 and older.

"Like many other businesses, our economic outlook has changed in the last year and, accordingly, we are taking steps to reduce expenses," Tarleton said. "But while we are reducing staffing in some departments, we are increasing staff in others to position us to take advantage of new opportunities when the economy turns, as it will."

Blame this on Bush also?

That is played as much as the race card around here.

It's funny, all these die hard republicans who pulled the R levers like a band sheep are getting bitten in the A*S by Bush and his band of Flunkies who are trashing this country. SERVES YOU RIGHT!

Ron repub's didn't create this, this has been coming for over a decade by private enterprises over exaggerating their worth swelling their portfolio's to elevated levels way beyond truth to trick normal citizens into investing money into lame duck businesses/projects that could never come to fruition

as Enron fell so has every other sector one by one, it's the CEO's and the likes everywhere that are to be blamed and charged accordingly if possible... the feds are going after the banks for fraud one by one and I suspect that's only the beginning

political preferences has no power over capitalism, capitalist allowed to run free without regulations is what caused this hole we've dug

I hope the employees are able to find employment elsewhere. There's damn near nothing worse than being unemployed.

I have to ask though - What happened with the recession that Charleston isn't feeling?

Jammer....

Lets not forget an apathetic population that doesn't vote.
We are the true regulators. We just need to get some individuals in office that work as a team and have some ethics.

Can you say...VACATION!!!! I would opt for the buyout so that I could spend a little time at home. Maybe a week or two and then I would hit the pavement looking for employment elsewhere. For those that are being affected by this at the P&C along with your classifieds there are many other job listing sites out there that you can visit to help you find a job. Good luck and happy hunting.

between nafta and illegal immigration, jobs are getting more scarce.

the war was too expensive, we should get a certain portion of the oil as we destroyed iraq and are now rebuilding it with our money.

we are going into a great depression

stephanie,

I don't think we have gotten that extreme yet. Heck, we aren't even in a recession yet, although there are those that would like us to believe that. We haven't had 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth, so the whole recession thing is totally over exaggerated right now. We have have slow growth, but we don't have "no" growth.

Newspapers are in decline.

We(online users)are proof of that.

Their obit will be texted, not written.

if johnq2 thinks the P&C is a Republican paper, I have some beachfront property in Kansas I'd like to sell him.

Oh John, if Charleston needs a paper of the kind you're suggesting, what are you doing to make it happen? Or are you a typical whine & moan lib? My money's on the latter.

I'm just sayin...

Maybe they are getting the place in order to be bought out by a big conglomerate

Posted by southerngirl45 on July 21, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

But johnq2 if there were no P&C how would you "post" every day and whatever would we do without you?(just kidding)

Posted by Larz13 on July 21, 2008 at 5:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

JohnQ is reading "unbiased" newspapers like the NYT that will only print Op-Ed pieces from those whose opinions they espouse.

Posted by farfallaspeaks on July 21, 2008 at 6:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Johnq2, well stated.
I read the P&C because it is my local paper, and if I want to know what is going on locally, that is where I turn too.

However I agree. It is extremely biased. There are sooo many stories that the P&C has NOT covered.
Overall, they are very right wing, which is expected from this state.

"take our country back and clean out ALL the Bush appointees and hacks."

I CAN'T WAIT!

Lovely_One,

Have you tried to find a job in our current economic state? People would be crazy to take a buyout and try to find another job. The only jobs available are labor, i.e. welding and mechanical jobs (many of which are now paying higher than many 4 year college degree jobs, i.e. teachers, social case workers, etc.) but they do require some short schooling (nowhere near 4 years of college though).

Joker,

I search for jobs everyday of the week. Not because I need one, but because I just want to see what's out there in the event I decide to leave my current job. There are many jobs in the market and not all of them require a 4 year degree or any degree at all. They have those that will take experience and commesurate their salary.
