Charges in killing dropped, published 6/25/08

LADSON — Stephanie Morosi kept a .380-caliber pistol in a pillow on her bed because she was so scared of Jason Truitt.

Morosi had been sprucing up her childhood house, sanding and painting the shutters and cleaning the mess left after new tile was put down in the kitchen on the evening of Sept. 14, 2006. Suddenly, Truitt suddenly came through the unlocked front door of 122 Hartford Drive.

He wore a gut hook skinning knife on his leather belt. He asked for money — and to move back in with her.

'I can't live with you, you're scaring me,' she told him.

The argument escalated and Morosi went to the bathroom to calm herself. Truitt was standing there when she opened the door.

'I just kept screaming for him to leave. That's when he grabbed a knife,' she told The Post and Courier on Friday, nearly a month after prosecutors dismissed a murder charge against her.

The steak knife came from her kitchen counter. When she told Truitt she'd call the police if he didn't leave, he called her a 'bitch' and said she wasn't calling anyone.

'I ran for my dear life and I ran as hard as I could,' she said.

Morosi ran to the bedroom and around to the far side of the bed.

'He pounced up on that bed,' she said.

She remembers thinking, 'This guy's gonna kill me. This guy could kill me with his own hands, as big as he is and as tiny as I am.'

'I've got to get to that gun,' she thought.

Morosi grabbed the gun and fired, killing Truitt.

'I don't remember hearing anything. I just remember I had to get him to stop running towards me because he was coming too close. My heart just felt like it was in my throat.'

An autopsy showed Morosi shot Truitt three times, in his abdomen, neck and head. She dropped the gun and ran to a neighbor's house to call 911.

'All I remember is when I called, I got kind of dizzy. I got kind of like a red haze over my eyes,' she said.

The neighbor covered her with a blanket.

'The shock, the blood just drains from your body,' she said.

Morosi, 32 and a wispy 105 pounds, admitted shooting Truitt, a 33-year-old she met at Citadel Mall, but told Berkeley County sheriff's detectives that night that she was afraid of the 6-foot-tall, 270-pound man she dated for a brief time and once allowed to live in her house.

She never thought she would spend the next 20 months with a murder charge hanging over her head.

Prosecutors announced June 24 that they were dropping the murder charge. Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said in a statement that the facts indicated that Morosi was in fear for her life when she shot Truitt.

Morosi had purchased a Bersa Thunder .380-caliber pistol in July for protection against Truitt, whose behavior she said had become increasingly erratic and threatening.

A Berkeley County Sheriff's office report documents that Morosi admitted in August 2006 that she removed two of Truitt's handguns from the house because she was scared.

Her attorney, Paul Thurmond, said Morosi started going to courses for victims of criminal domestic violence and started developing safety plans. She

kicked Truitt out days before the shooting, Thurmond said.

Morosi expected to go home after she recounted the timeline for detectives the night of the killing, but she was arrested on a charge of murder and spent the next three months in the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner.

Morosi had been living in her childhood home. Though it belonged to her father, he was in the process of giving it to her. Morosi's sister came

from Virginia and sold the house so Morosi could make her $75,000 bail; she was released in December 2006.

She looked for jobs, but found it difficult to find work because of the notoriety of the murder charge pending against her.

At the time Morosi was arrested, her main source of income as an escort became public. She required a 'donation' of $250 an hour to be collected at the beginning of the 'date,' according to her Web posting.

Morosi

said Friday that she was looking for a male version of herself on her dates. In a time when people don't get married to have sex or even have children, she sees what she did for a living as no worse or different.

Thurmond said he doubts detectives would have been so quick to arrest Morosi had she been in a different line of work, say, a kindergarten teacher.

'I don't think a reasonable person would say she would receive less scrutiny than the teacher,' Thurmond said of the length of time that passed between Morosi's arrest and the dismissal of the charge.

After her release from jail, Morosi worked for a brief time at the IHOP on Ashley Phosphate Road, but grew nervous when it was twice robbed.

She's using what's left from the sale of the house in Ladson to attend Trident Technical College, and hopes to become a nurse.

She's living on a friend's sofa and said she's discovered that Goodwill is a great place to shop for bargains.

Such sad turns some lives take. Our world conspires to drive us to any means to have "the dream" but in the end all we really "need" is a little peace.

Lord I don't need a big house and a fine yard. I don't need a Lexus or Mercedes Benz, or fancy shoes, expensive clothes or a rolex watch. Lord all I just need a little peace.

Peace where I'll have freedom from bill collector and illness and hunger, and fear. Lord I don't need new Nikes, or a new Sony flat screen tv, or an increase in my credit limit.

All I need is a little Peace!

OK the sermon is over, ya'll go on and enjoy the rest of your low country Sunday Morning.

That is some gutting knife ... then the other knife that was NOT even entered into evidence?? Sad about what happened. Prosecutors are suppose to adhere to the Constitution and laws of the US and South Carolina. Doesn't seem to me they were exactly totally fair here. But they don't care one way or another if they ruin an innocent life. After all, some prosecutors are not even humans.

Aside from that, now comes yet another opportunity for more nasty comments about this victim, that will be posted by the dysfunctional and deranged members of our society:

I know stephanie and she is the nicest person you could ever meet. I have hung with her on occasion at her friends house and have yet to feel uneasy or anything. Im glad she finally got a chance to tell her side of the story, now maybe people will leave her alone about it and let her get on with her life.

Don't you think it's odd that he grabbed a steak knife off the kitchen counter when he had a knife rather handy on his belt?

jlh61182

"get on with her life" much like "he's in a better place" hardly words that will correct the concept of "he needed killing" the lowest members of our society will continue to aspire to amaze us with their lives.

In general:

Stephanie Morosi (hooker) meets Jason Truitt (thug) and who could not have expected this or a worse outcome?

Caught up in a cycle of stupid. Morosi's life took a wrong turn the first time she took fifty bucks for sex. To her it wasn't a big thing, and even today she can't see anything wrong with it.

The tragic truth is that Stephanie will be in the news again.

Of course a prostitute is not viewed in the same light as a kindergarten teacher. duh.
You lie with dogs....

Yet again, PnC writes another "feel good" story about a person who pretty much made their own bed.

$250 an hour! whoa
Maybe he wanted his money back?

Maybe tomorrow we will see an article about Truitt and how he was such an outdoorsman and only wanted to settle down with a nice girl.

Might as well stitch together and fancy up both sow ears even though neither one comes close to resembling a silk purse.

Posted by smalltownrumor on July 20, 2008 at 8 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Please read all the Southern jokes......"he needed killing" is an acceptable defense when you have the evidence to back it up.

No matter how you make your living, if a person invades your home, refuses to leave, and threatens your life, Thank God, you still have the right to ruin this person's afternoon.

Posted by suec on July 20, 2008 at 8:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree that she had reason to shoot him.

What I take offense to is her complaint about being viewed differently than a kindergarten teacher.

She was not exactly an upstanding citizen or some innocent tiny sweet little thing. She was a prostitute. She sold her body for money. Lots of money. Tax free money I would bet.

This isn't much different than a drug deal gone bad.

'I don't think a reasonable person would say she would receive less scrutiny than the teacher,' Thurmond said ....

So, Thurmond, ex-GOP prosecutor that you are, you are acknowledging what we all already know--that justice often is determined by who you are & what you do.

Hmmm...or what lawyer you happen to have....like, say, one who belonged to the same club as his opposing counsel.

I can't say if this killing is justified or not...

What I do know though is that this woman is a fruitcake. Her rants on her websites (I've visisted 3 of her websites) and her rants when she used to post here all led me to believe that her mind is not normal and she could be dangerous.

Give everyone a pistol, train them properly, and America would be a safer place.

The stupid will take care of themselves by killing each other and we'd help the stupid when they try to enter our homes uninvited.

WHATEVER her career choice was, if she felt that her life was threatened, good for her to have had the means to do what she did...even if she is a looney...

Because of the line of work she willingly chose for herself she was begging for problems and trouble. When trouble finally did come she chose to handle it with deadly force. I don't have any good answers for the situation, but it dosen't seem to me she should walk scott free. It seems the justice system is falling down on this case. Mike Dill

She still posts here. She was on as early as Friday I think.
If people want to put things behind them why do they always seen to grant a P&C interview which only keeps the story in the publics mind. Maybe she views it as free advertisment for here service? Thomas must be her new boyfriend. Watch your back tommy boy... and remember to knock first.

CB, tripsa, and jeff, wouldn't you know the PnC would do a bleeding heart story on this professional victim? We have all read her posts, and know that she is not "right" in the head. It's a shame that Mr. Truitt can't tell his side.
CedarPosts, I think it is very odd that he grabbed a silly little steak knife, when he had a " gut hook skinning knife" right on his belt.
I'm sorry, but I could never believe anything this woman says.

I think she should be locked up. The police should have gathered more evidence to make the case stick. I would not believe anything she said based on what she posted on her websites.

I do have to agree with Stephie that what she did for a living can be viewed as not much different from some realationships. I could even find her version of these event believable although there may be some things that could be questionable. Not sure what made you nervious about IHOP. You have already shown you can handle a gun. But I am not sure why you continue to keep yourself out on the front page of the P&C if your hoping to put this behind you and move on. Seems you enjoy this public attention.

ALL the people who read this artical,PLEASE read it again!!!!Loopholes, loopholes, loopholes. Now if I may!FIRST of all a gun under her pillow!(she was afraid of Truit-not so fast!)If I were afraid of a man,the first thing I would do is have a domestic record against him!She was taking domestic violance classes! SMART-that sound like a good plan for murder. She started making "safty plans"(are you getting it yet?She ran to the bathroom because she needed to calm herself and when she opened the door he was standing there.HE grabed a kitchen knife-wasn't he wearing a big gut hook knife? Seems like that would be the one to use if you really intended harm.SO did he run back to the kitchen to get the knife(they were at the bathroom remember?)She runs for her life as fast as she could straigt to the bedroom where the gun was.Personally, while he was gone to get a "steak knife' I would have taken my scared A** out of that house as fast as I could. Now we are in the bedroom! he is running toward her and she thinks "I MUST GET TO THAT GUN",Howcould he be running towards her and he on the bed?You people who are saying "poor little thing" needto read again. Why did she have to sell her house? At 250.00 an hour she must have had a pretty good nestegg. Now with all the sympathy she is getting from everyone why don't we all just pay for her to go to "nursing school"OMG a nurse!WHAT A DRAMA QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!One last word-Scarlet Wilson needs to be in private practice because she is so great at letting murders and rapists go free!!!!!REMEMBER,READ AGAIN AND TAKE IT ALL IN!

OK southerngirl,

You make a very convincing argument, but what you are saying is Solicitor office either ignored all these facts, could not see all these inconsistencies in her story or is it she paid $50,000 to a lawyer and was given a free pass. I am all for someone being able to defend their self, but did she set him up? She claims to have called the police several times and was getting or had a restraining order. Stephie should just keep herself out of the news. None of this can be good for her business. Maybe she should hook up with Ashley Dupree. They both brought down their man.

southerngirl45, you have to be an inbred.

reread the article

I lived in a ranch style house, front and back door is on the left side of the house....bathroom and bedrooms are on the right side. My bedroom door lock was out of alignment so I was in the bathroom telling him to leave, he got quiet. I opened the door and realized he was still there and I told him I was calling the police. His smaller knife was in harder to get to as it was in a leather accesory but he was in the kitchen blocking both doorways and I would have to walk past him to flee the house. He lost his temper and grabbed the knife and I retreated to my room where I hid my gun. No one should have to retreat from their own house as he didn't live there
------------
Jason and I hadn't had sex in 3 yrs as he was an exboyfriend so there wasn't any business deal involved. He actually used coercion to keep a lot of women near him until he grew tired of them or found someone else. He was after my future inheritance by trying to force his way back into my life.
-------------------
as for my smiling in my interviews....since I didn't get a trial... a lot of the evidence that paul showed nita were evidence I got to see for the first time as paul was worried about my PTSD and I was glad that another female was seeing the pain I went through. Nita's shocked expressions showed me that my opinion to defend myself was valid and she might have done the same.

things that happen while you are on 1st degree murder charges:

1. can't operate a gun/taser...best not to be seen even with a baseball bat for the public opinion
2. might not even be able to own pepperspray...I didn't have the nerve to ask the police or pester my lawyer on that one

3. can't apply for any job requiring criminal background check
4. might not be able to live at most apartment complexes...children around
5. can't take self defense....I didn't know how to defend myself but most rednecks think of ninjas using swords or using lethal kicks/punches to fight so I didn't risk it
6. stay away from all children.....didn't want anyone thinking I could ever hurt an innocent child...I might have a temper but only towards idiots never children

Tripsa,

Based on other cases of self-defense when a home is invaded and the invader(s) are shot and killed inside the home, to include past court rulings, former SC State Attorney General 'opinions', it is salient that it was a weak case from very first day.

Aside from that, you are stepping into the area of double jeopardy.

tripster, I will try not to feed the troll.

thomas, double jeopardy, good point.

I think that if I were in her shoes, not only would they be to tight, but I would want the innocent until proven guilty treatment. that is the way it should be.

All in all, the young woman has been through enough hell as it is. She has been cleared and the records will be expunged as if this all never happened to her. She has lost everything she had. So why continue to beat up on her? Are you people so hateful that you actually find pleasure in it?

Leave her alone. Let her get on with her life. Besides, I think a book deal and possible movie may come out of this at some point and she will become an instant millionaire. And I hope it does.

Some people just need a break in life sometimes. Some people are just not as fortunate as others and born with silver spoons in their mouths.

I don't know the woman in the least except what I have read, regardless of her posting and so forth, I still wish her well and all the best. She has come out of this a winner. Now the hardest part lays ahead; rebuilding a life that was destroyed by overzealous police and prosecutors.

EvilGenius,

She should have been treated fair and like our Constitution and laws prescribe. Yet sad to say, our justice system and many who work in it are pretentious.

thomas1776, it will be a beotch, rebuilding her life here, after all the attention in the media. I think I would have to move.

POSTERS-Thank goodness! There for a while I was scared she might become a nurse!!!THE MORE THIS MORAN opens her mouth the higher her **** piles up.Keep talking stephaniem, and the truth might come out accidently!!!!!!!!!You have already contradicted yourself once here by saying you are afraid of big men ---Sure sounds like Truit was a big guy himself, yet you slept with him for HOW LONG WAS IT? What kind of woman picks up a man at Citadal Mall? Let me tell you people,NOT one worth $250.00 an hour.I'd say if the truth be known this poor guy just ran out of money!I'm much smarter than you "scared little girl",so do't try to debate me-you'll loose!!!!!!!!!Gotta go ,I'll be back tonight though!

southerngirl45, you seem pretty angry, relax, go to the Citadal Mall.

I agree with thomas1776 on this one! LEAVE HER ALONE and let her try to rebuild her life back! All of you are saying that yall dont know her except, for what yall read about her through here. Try talking to somebody who really does know her! None of yall knows what shes like in real life and yall still just keep insulting her for something that the jury dropped charges on. Why cant people just stop judging people?

Stephaniem - I'm still waiting for a response to my post regarding the contrasting statements. You have chosen to post here, so I'm just calling you out for an explanation.

tripsa, yes, the websites are still up.

http://www.stephaniemorosi.com/

http://www.angelfire.com/home/stephaniem...

She has a myspace website too, but she hasn't updated since she killed this dude:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fus...

Reading her blogs is like watching a slow motion train wreck. This girl has serious issues. I knew someone like her. She is very insecure about her own self being. Her entire life is a made up fantasy designed to get attention. She's one of those women that doesn't feel attractive unless a man is screweing her. I doubt she was even a real whore. Again, I think that whole fantasy is an attention getter for her. Look at her... she has photos of herself all over the web... not one of them screams $250 worth of sex. It's sad... interesting to read... but sad.

She supposedly hates SC.. I'll be glad when she moves. She'll kill again..

I think it's funny. At least this chick charges upfront. How many of you women that are condemning her gave it up for a nice house, a car and other creature comforts? At least this chick was honest. As for those who are sure they know better than all the LE people who decided way too late to let her go, what can you expect??

Posted by willbillbedamned on July 20, 2008 at 2:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

People like southerngirl, who can't spell and tripsa, who evidently can't think, are always quick to condemn. No compassion ever graces their entries, just virulent spewing.

Presently, I am more concerned over how authorities handled this case than w/ what sort of person Morosi is.

I don't know the "truth" about this woman or situation, but I do question how this case has been handled from beginning to end.

I am curious as to what prompted her arrest in the 1st place. They either had valid probable cause or they did not.

An investigation should have occurred prior to arresting Morosi for MURDER. After all, the "Castle Doctrine" isn't exactly a new defense, & from the beginning Morosi claimed she acted in self defense.

I am curious as to why the "powers that be" ended up "deciding" to believe Morosi's version of the story. What changed? What did they discover that they did not know in the weeks prior to arresting her?

Quoting from the statement given in a prior article:
"..the facts point to Morosi being in fear for her life..."
"Morosi and others...said Truitt was in a dangerous pattern of depression, including suicidal and homicidal thoughts."

What facts? What facts came to light that were not known prior to arresting this woman?

It is interesting that the solicitor's office refers to un-sworn opinions & observations as "facts" to support an action in this case.

Would the solicitor's office have dismissed the charges if Morosi had no lawyer or a different one?

I don't buy the "lack of evidence" reasoning. Evidence or lack of it hasn't seemed to be a factor of consistency in how the solicitor's office proceeds w/ various cases.

Further, it seems that if there was such a lack of evidence the woman should not have been arrested at all.

If they had probable cause, then have a trial & present a case for a jury to consider.

Another quote from prior article:
"There is no evidence to disprove Morosi's account of the shooting," ...this is interesting. I thought that juries were supposed to determine what the evidence, or lack of it, proved & disproved.

preachlove, I shouldn't go for the bait but this is common knowledge

I worked in the mall around 2000 when I met jason. I dated him for a month in 2000. He started gaining a lot of weight. I didn't feel attracted to him b/c the man who raped me in college was obese. I told him we could part as friends. I didn't talk to him until after my mom died in 2002 when he offered his sympathy. We never even kissed at that point. We went dutch to the movies and to dinner as I hated my own cooking and I hated eating alone...nothing is more depressing than eating alone when you are used to eating with someone your entire life. He needed a place to stay and I didn't want him there but I felt guilty b/c I had a better life than him. I told him it was temporary. He did move out as my father didn't want him there b/c he pulled some stunts and my father gets the final word. He thought he could move back in and I would hide him from my father. I wouldn't. When my father confronted me about my profession, I told him the truth. I try to tell the truth as much as I can to everyone I know. That is why I never use false names or handles. I have better things to do than read all the idiots on this board

I am amazed that it took the prosecutor up until the trial date to make up their mind. I guess that is where the money needs to flow to get anything to happen. I don’t care what she did for a living, the law is the law and everyone should be treated equal.

If she was making so much money in the escort business, why the hell did she live in Ladson. Looks like business wasn't so good after all for her. If I'm willing to sell my body, I better at least live on the IOP:)

Stephanie - I wasn't trying to bait you as I haven't followed this story. I just saw what I thought was an inconsistency. Thank you for your response and good luck to you in the future.

Disco...maybe business in Ladson is better than IOP. I would have gladly hired her as an escort.

I think she's got a screw loose and if she keeps running her mouth she's going to get the noose.

I've dug around and I'll dish the dirt I've turned up over at the blog later when I've got more time.

things that happen while you are on 1st degree murder charges:
3. can't apply for any job requiring criminal background check

I thought you had a job making 250. an hour??

5. can't take self defense....I didn't know how to defend myself but most rednecks think of ninjas using swords or using lethal kicks/punches to fight so I didn't risk it

You worked as an ESCORT..going to meet complete strangers for one on one 'companionship'..you mean you never thought about self defense before??
BTW-who are your referring to as being rednecks?
I'm sorry if I offended you I just could never imagine meeting complete strangers and doing a type of job that is considered immoral and dangerous physically and not knowing how to defend yourself but I'm not here to judge only God has that right which I see you could care less since your atheist..well GOD BLESS YOU, I hope things get better in your life ..

I'm just wondering why she didn't call the cops immediately in the beginning? Or have some type of order of protection put on Truitt..?

Very good questions. Did any of these get answered in this interview? If not then why? I would think this would be the reason for doing the interview. She is not being charged so it is not like she needs to prove her innocents. If I had to spend three months in jail and $50 grand on a lawyer I would want almost all of these questions answered. Is she due anything from the county for the time and money spent? I tried to watch part of the interview and I could not get through it. It was almost like watching on of those HBO specials, Hookers on the Point and other “Escort” documentaries.

I still say her mouth is too small for a hooker!
As I posted in the past, she had time to grab the pillow, point the gun, aim and shoot and this guy was right across the bed? Yea right!
Six foot and 270, he was a fat-ass.

archdude, you're correct. My post was out of line and I apologize to Ms. Morosi. I still think she is a nutcase, and a dangerous one, but I speculated on things that I know nothing about. It was a rough Sunday. Stayed up too late Saturday night and there was no Sprint Cup race to enjoy this weekend. The good news is that I only had to drive over a couple of streets to buy beer on Sunday :)

I knew this girl in high school she was a constant victim even then. Always ranting and raving about someone doing her wrong. She may have been justified in this shooting, for now that is what we have to assume, but I strongly believe that we will be hearing her name again. For now if she wants to remain free, my advise to her would be shut up!!
