Vehicle, boat trailer roll into water; no one hurt

Staff report
Friday, July 18, 2008

An unattended vehicle and boat trailer rolled down the Remley's Point boat landing in Mount Pleasant on Thursday night into about 25 feet of water, officials said.

"It was too deep to mess with," said Fire Department Battalion Chief Ron Alexander.

At about 8:30 p.m., the Charleston County dive team was en route to facilitate an effort to haul the vehicle and trailer out of the water, Alexander said. No one was trapped in the vehicle, he said.

The Coast Guard could be heard on a police scanner responding with a boom to contain a small sheen of fuel on the water in the vicinity of the sunken trailer and vehicle.

I hope the owners of the truck/boat are held financially responsible for this. You have to make more than one stupid mistake for this to happen.

Watching the action at boat landings can be interesting and entertaining. All kinds of stuff happens - this being the most extreme.

I was told a story by a boat dealer whoes business was on the water. Someone had bought a boat and took it out for a while but brought it back to dealer because the ride was rough and the boat did not excell. When the dealer lifted the boat out of the water with a boat lift,, the trailer was still attached.

That one is hard to believe jeff61, but funny as hell.

And no Tammie.. that was not my wife and I <lol>. My wife is actually very proficient at backing the trailer down the ramp, so I can just hop in the boat and handle that end while she handles the truck and trailer.

On a side note.. if you are a boater, and you're one of those people that have to back the trailer down, get out of your truck, get in your boat, back the boat off of the trailer, tie the boat to the dock (blocking the ramp), get out of the boat, get back in the truck, park the truck, get back in the boat and finally leave, all while your wife or fishing buddy stands there and watches... you suck.

Unless you are going boating alone, that should NEVER happen.

This was up in Southern MD,, It is actually a true story. They had taken picures as they were lifting it out of the water...

jeff61, I have herd that one as a joke before. Nice to know it's true...

ColdBeer, I agree with you 110%!!! I can't stand the dock hogs, as we like to call them. If you are alone, fine. My husband and I do the same thing as you and your wife only reversed. I love watching the helpless men watch ME, a woman, handle the boat while they are still tied to the dock. I always laugh a little on the inside....

One thing is for sure. These people won't do this one again!!!! Hopefully this will make them more responsible in the future. There are a lot of folks out there who just should NOT have a boat.

I agree CB that should never happen and the ones who suck are the deadbeat tagalongs. Unless the owner is like, I CAN DO IT!! I don't need anyones help. Then he too would suck!

Jeff61,

It is mostly told as a joke but there actually might be some truth to it. While Snopes.com doesn't say one way or the other, they do reference it as being possibly a true story...

...ahh, the stupidity. Gotta love it.

For sale: Water dxxxxx

NEW UPHOLSTERY!

As for the dock hogs, I get more frustrated with the people who don't know what they are doing. I'd rather the captain do the entire process himself than one person screw it up and the other fix it. It takes less time.....

It really is a true story. It was at Towne Creek Marina in S. MD about 15 years ago. It was a Middle Eastern guy that bought the boat. I just happen to be there when he pulled up to the dock and the dealer used a boat lift to bring it up out the water,,, and the trailer was still attached to the boat.
