Study ranks South Carolina 7th in obesity
The Post and Courier
Friday, July 18, 2008
South Carolina ranks seventh in the country in the number of adults who report they are obese, according to a new government survey. Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee lead the nation when it comes to obesity. Colorado was the least obese, with about 19 percent fitting the category. An estimated 28.4 percent of South Carolina adults reported being obese in 2007, compared with the national average of 25.6 percent. The findings reported Thursday were derived from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a state-based telephone survey. Nationally, more than 350,000 adults are interviewed annually. Self-reported studies offer conservative estimates because men commonly overstate their height and women often lowball their weight, health experts say.
Top 10
These 10 states have the highest levels of adult obesity, according to a 2007 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 1. Mississippi 32.0 percent 2. Alabama 30.3 3. Tennessee 30.1 4. Louisiana 29.8 5. West Virginia 29.5 6. Arkansas 28.7 7. South Carolina 28.4 8. Georgia 28.2 9. Oklahoma 28.1 10. Texas 28.1
While the numbers change little year to year, a dramatic change is visible during the past 10 to 20 years, said Patrick M. O'Neil, director of Medical University of South Carolina's Weight Management Center. In 1997, only 16.9 percent of South Carolinians reported being obese. Obesity is defined as a body mass index of 30 or above. BMI is calculated using height and weight. For example, a 5-foot-9-inch adult who weighs 203 pounds would have a BMI of 30, putting that person into the obese category. Said O'Neil: "It's not just that a few more people each year gain a couple of pounds and edge into the obese category. The entire group of people who qualify for obesity is growing numerically and so is the extent to which people are obese." Southern states have clustered at the top of the list for years, and some experts blame the traditional Southern diet — high in fat and fried food. "Let's not forget sweet tea," O'Neil said. The regional drink can contain as much sugar as a soft drink. Where the South leads, the rest of the United States is likely to follow, O'Neil said. "I don't think we're unique in diet that's high fat. We eat the same fast food," he said. Diet might be part of the answer, said Dr. William Dietz, who heads CDC's nutrition, physical activity and obesity division. The South also has a large concentration of rural residents and black women — two groups that tend to have higher obesity rates, Dietz said. Colorado, meanwhile, is a state with a reputation for exercise. It has plentiful biking and hiking trails and an elevation that causes the body to labor a bit more, Dietz said. Nationally, the proportion of adults who report they are obese increased nearly 2 percent between 2005 and 2007. The Associated Press contributed to this report. I live near two fast food places and occasionally go there. Looks like a lot of folks eat breakfast and lunch at these places just about every day and I see a lot of heavy weights in this crowd. People need to prepare more meals at home with an eye to eating healthy. It would also be cheaper.
My BMI is below 25 (high end of normal).

I used to be morbidly obese in school, I dropped 140 lbs in about 2 years. And had a growth spurt, which helped. But one thing I have noticed (just with MY family) is that even then, I was much healthier than my older brother, who weighed about 120 and he was 5'2. He had high blood pressure and mine was normal. *shrug* Just make better food choices and like Neponset said, eat at home!
I still like my men a lil thick in the waist though. :-)As long as they're over 6 feet! Lol

Good for you - I don't know much about the problem, and my solutions may be simplistic (sp?), but I think diet should be the first approach.

Neponset, mine came from REAL GOOD SOUTHERN EATING. Now I know I have to limit myself. My family is a big group of Northerners that adapted to southern living and southern cooking. Everything got cooked with lard, some kind of meat with fat, etc..lol Hell, look at Paula Deen. She is the ONLY woman I have ever seen that makes "fried macaroni". (But her food is delicious!) I just make healthier eating choices and drink LOTS of water. Lemonade occassionally and juices but water is my thing. I know after I have this baby, I am going to have to get back on the ball with my exercising. I dont think people should stop eating, just not as much, you know?

Sounds like you have a handle on the situation. I too am from the north and like a lot of the Southern foods - hell, I even like steamed okra! But moderation is important. It is ironic that black woman seem to fit big in this problem - their moms and before did all the cooking for white folks and now they seem to not cook much and get most of their meals at fast food.

Obese people are not really a problem. Obese people in skinny people clothing (spandex, short shorts, mini-skirts) IS a problem.

Wait... tammie, you're brother is 5'2" and weighs 120 and that was his unhealthy?
Ouch.
I remember going to a nutritionist during the school year, and she said some pretty surprising things. Everything really is about portion size, just like you've all said. But alot of people don't understand what the portions really are. For example, the correct portion of red meat at a meal is 4-6oz. Try finding something that small on a dinner menu at any restaurant.
Eating more fruits help. They're mostly water, and will fill you up but without the fat and calories.
As far as sweet tea goes, I think I'm going downhill on that one. I like mine with vodka. And evidently a long island ice tea has 700 calories.

After visiting Colorado to see my daughter I can understand their ranking. There are biking, walking, and jogging trails everywhere. Plenty of large parks to explore and all for free.
People in SC do like their Southern cooking or good old fashioned soul food. Nothing tastes better than comfort foods like country fried steak and mac n' cheese. It is hard not to eat the foods that you were raised on.
I only allow myself to eat traditional Southern cuisine every once in awhile.
I take regular recipes at home and convert them to no, or low fat ones.
I guess SC is just a "rank" state, but I love it anyway.

Haha, sorry tripsa. that's probably not the mental image you want in the morning. But to be fair, I have to suffer through it on a regular basis at work or school. I remember wanting to go to the marble slab on campus, but as soon as I'd walk up I'd see one of those "fat people in little people's clothes" situations and immediately change my mind.

Not sure where I read this, but some random poll was done about fat kids and some parents actually said they thought french fries were good for their kids to eat, because at one point a long long time beforehand they were potatoes.

Most poor people don't eat less to save money, they eat crap instead.
No, the poor eat cheap processed foods, and fast food (McDonalds, KFC, Church's Chicken, etc..) They don't eat fruit or nuts to snack, they eat chips and candy bars. They don't eat healthy organic cheese free of Bovine Growth Hormones, they eat fake pre-slices, pre-packaged individually wrapped fake cheese. They don't eat the kind of bread that goes hard in one day, they eat the bread that will sit soft on the shelf for a week until it grows mold.
They don't drink water, they drink packaged soda that is full of sugar and carbs.
(I worked in a grocery store)
Have you all ever paid attention to what they feed children in schools? It's depressing.
Most of our society is getting fatter and poorer, thus increasing the chances of needing medical treatment for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc... and not being able to pay for it.
The healthier our society becomes, the less we will be dependent on Medicine or Doctors, and Insurance Companies, and the less it's going to cost to make us better.
That will make GOOD free health care more affordable, and less of a tax burden. If you think eating that cheap .69 cent hamburger is going to be easier on your wallet, think again. It will cost you down the road.
I always laughed at the stories I've read of these big families that pride themselves in spending so little on food per month to support their huge families, going to the grocery store just once a month sometimes. They obviously don't buy anything fresh. Not surprisingly, they are all FAT!
I read somewhere we have a pretty low life expectancy rate in this country in comparison to other countries, some of which are 2nd world. That makes me very sad. We are one of the richest countries in the world with the best technology, and yet we can't seem to live longer.
We should learn from the country that starts with J east of China (P&C won't let me type that word), that I have read live the longest.
All they eat is fish and rice.
Humanity has the ability to live to 100.

And I'm waiting for Paula Dean to OD on lard. She was on Letterman one night making FRIED MACARONI. She got day old mac and cheese, rolled it in flour, and deep fried it. In a cast iron pan. I gained 30 lbs watching her cook it.
Hell, now I want ribs too. I have to wait until tomorrow, family reunion! Gadsden, I'll save you some bread pudding and cornbread. :-) Lol

tripsa, my friend saw that picture and said he'd still hit it. I thought the picture looked oddly familiar.
It is cheaper to gain weight than lose weight, but can you fault the families with they can't afford the freshest food available? Organic markets have taken a hit since the economy has dropped and many families can't afford that anymore.
Why live to 100? Once I get to the point where I can't do everything for myself that I should, I think I'll be good to go.

I can see there is a very intelligent conversation going on over here in regards to this article. I will add that while the economy has taken a plunge, the cold beer companies are still profiting, because alcohol is addictive and destructive and makes you fat and violent, and some poor people are depressed to be so poor, so they just drink more.
tisk tisk tisk.
When I worked at the grocery store on Folly, I would get there at 7 in the morning, and most of the poor people coming in were alcoholics buying beer and cigarettes.
Those same people were well known at the store for beating their wives
I just thought I would share that with you, especially since some of you don't know which substances are dangerous and which are not, as you have clearly shown your ignorance in many articles.

I usually go to the Ye Olde Fashioned once a week for a Salad, and it kills me to see some obese family of 4, none of whom's butts fit on the seat, but drape over it, and they are all eating the double mega bacon cheeseburgers with large orders of chilli cheese fries and large cokes.

gadsden, I'm a little heart broken over the InBev sale, but I can't blame A-B. I'd sell alot of things for $50B+. But InBev is going to have a hard time continuing with A-B, alot of it due to how poorly they've done in the market recently. And now that Bud will no longer be "the great american lager" it'll make things much harder for them.
I'd like to point out that while we all love our food/drink that will eventually kill us, it's all about moderation and personal choice. Too much of anything is bad for you. And it seems like most people here have either been working very hard to monitor their health or have actually lost alot of weight. But people will do what they want.

FYI, in my opinion, the problem with your stance is that you don't want "drugs" legalized.. you only want the drugs that you want to use legalized. Kind of self-centered isn't it?
The bottom line, as I pointed out in another article, is that drugs are illegal. If you want the law changed, work to get it changed. Break the law and then you can expect to pay the price.
Learn to post like an intelligent person and then people will respond to you in the same manner.

POSTED BY WILLIE08: "That will make GOOD free health care more affordable, and less of a tax burden."
This has got to be the most IDIOTIC statement I have EVER heard in my life. I hope to god you wear a helmet at all times and never reproduce.
Answer me this: If something is free, how could it be made more affordable? Also, if it is free there are no tax burdens so you could not lessen them.
I would bet you are referring to UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, right? It is funded by tax dollars, so it is not free. Maybe it is free to you because you do not work and live off of others. If this is the case, I hope you enjoy your place in life. You would be a parasite living off your host, if something happens to this host (cut programs, etc.) you would be on your own. That must be terrifying to you. You could not possibly exist without the gov't taking care of you.
I have a dog. This dog relies on me for everything. Food, water, shelter, vet trips, etc. If I stop doing these things, this dog will die. He is subservient to me, a SLAVE if you will. I have ultimate control over him because he has relied on me since his birth and will until he dies.
Sounds a lot like the welfare system, no? I have to go now and take my dog out. Going to the bathroom in the house is against the rules. If he breaks the rules, he will get punished.

I heard stella was pretty good, but I can't get into import beers. Not sure why, probably because heineken ruined it for me.
single malt scotch sounds a little intimidating. I used to love long island ice teas until I heard they had 700 calories per drink, and since I drink it by the pitcher... yeah.

Get a 16 ounce bowl of cool whip and some fresh fruit (I love strawberries) put them in a blender and of course blend it together and put it in the freezer and you got yourself some fat free ice cream.....I love me some oreo cookies and sour patch kids but I still maintain my weight...
I lost 50 pounds from Atkins about 2 years ago and I have been healthier & happier ever since.
I do not eat late at night like I use to and I do not eat out a lot either.

girleygirl- that sounds so good right now. I've been eating the fatfree plain yogurt with blue berries and granola lately, and that's a pretty taste alternative to ice cream as well.
and tripsa- you should want to, haha. The only problem I've had lately is that my tolerance has gone up. It's still low comparatively; i'm a little above five feet tall, my body can only handle so much.

I stick with Bud Light... liquor and I don't get along well.
Gadsden, my views on drugs are different from yours. I base that mainly on the fact that I have never met an adult that is using drugs past the teen/young adult experimentation stage that has his/her act together. There "may" be some out there, but I've never met one. In my experience, people that continue to smoke pot past those early years are usually losers. They have below average jobs, change jobs frequently, have poor relationships that don't last and they cannot be relied upon if you need their help with anything. I have no tolerance for alcoholics or people that drink irresponsibly either. The difference is that I have met MANY adults that drink beer or liquor responsibly that DO have their acts together. I'm one of them. Contrary to my name on here, beer is not my life. I do enjoy a cold beer with friends though.
As I said, there may be some drugs users out there that are not losers, I just personally have not met any of them yet. The majority of the drug supporters on here post in such a way that leads me to believe that they too are losers. You're an exception as you always try and make your point with some level of intelligence.
OK... back to the obese chat… I wasn’t trying to hijack the thread.

Tripsa said, "Mostly though, single malt Scotch is my preffered drink of choice!" Ditto here! I have several bottles I sip from when I'm in the mood for just lounging and having a drink. The Glenlivet 18 year is my favorite....closely followed by Oban 14 year (really does smell like straight gasoline). I happen to traitor though. Knappogue is a VERY tasty IRISH single malt.
When I'm out, I drink JD and diet. I absolutely hate beer though. On a very rare occasion, I'll drink Guiness, but that's it. Then again, Guiness doesn't taste a whole lot like regular beer.

I can't do the Hefe Weizen. I tried, just not my thing. But that's a popular beer, and definitely shows some brew-knowledge.
Guinesses is the milkshake of beers, but actually no worse calorie wise than most light beers.

If you enjoy a single malt scotch, you should try something from The Balvenie. They still do it all old school, growing their own barley, making their own barrels and even have their own copper smith to maintain the stills. Good stuff.

Ever since Medicare determined that obesity is a disease, I could not help but notice the number of worker in hospitals, nursing homes and some doctors offices who are obviously sick.
When the best we can do is have the sick taking care of the sick we are in a heap of trouble. When my wife was at Roper I remember one woman who was so large there is no way she could have quickly gotten to a patient with a problem. And there were more than a few obese nurses there. And nurses aids.
Rule should be any licensed worker in the health field cannot be obese and cannot smoke. Should apply to doctors, nurses, aids, technicians, etc.
How well I remember the trim nurses of yesteryear in their starched white uniforms like angels of mercy who seem to always drop by whether you called them or not.
Now nurses more often wear multi-colored clothes that conceal the fact their kid they dropped off at a child care center or took to the doctor had barfed on them and they hastily wiped it off and dash in to take care of patients. And they all use the "paperwork" defense as an excuse for staying in the nurse station fortress as much as possible.
And they wonder why hospital and institution infections are epidemic.
Almost makes you wonder what kind of idiots are running our health care system these days?

The world must be coming to a end because I also agree with Gadsden on at legalizing least pot (verdict is still out on hard drugs). I feel that the war on drugs is a farce and that it causes more problems that it solves (prohibition anyone). Besides, if someone wants to get high after work, it is there own business. I don't think that it is any worse than alcohol. The key is the moderation!
I don't use it now (I did in college) because I have responsibilities that require me not too, but if it was legal, I don't feel that a joint after work to be a bad, again if it is done in moderation.

You have brought up several issues that I can relate to:
1. I miss the good looking nurses in starched white uniforms - I though they where hot!
2. The current crop of care givers have weight issues and do not look very good in their sloppy multi colored scrubs.

Posted by ColdBeer on July 18, 2008 at 12:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)
One hole I can see in the "legalize drug" argument is that they WERE legal, for the most part, until the Korean War... addiction, loss of productivity and crime were the reasons why the federal government stepped in a started controlling drugs. Even with pot... if you go back to the hippie days of San Fran, no one was stopping that crowd from smoking pot. They did it willingly and openly. They burnt themselves out and many went on to become addicted to other, more dangerous drugs. The entire hippie movement ended on its own... due to drug use. Again... loss of productivity and addiction.
Alcohol can be abused, I agree, but controlled substances have proven, more than one time throughout history, to be much more dangerous.

Glenfiddich 12 year old single malt is very smooth.
The Glenlivet 12 year old (and that is 12 year old scotch, just in case there is any confusion) for me, cant afford that 18 year old stuff.
And if its Irish, its jameson whisky.
all of them always neat.
For a good blended scotch, i go with Johnny Walker black label.
anyway, that was a long trip of topic...but, if you drink enough of it you will get fatty liver! lol

A good friend of mine is a teacher in the Dorchester County School District, and had a child whose name was "One-twenty". When the child's father came in for a teacher parent conference, she asked the father, in a very polite way, how exactly he came to name his son One-Twenty. The father stated that before the child was conceived, he was in a really bad place with drugs and alcohol, and when he found out he was going to be a father, he did a complete 120.. ha! too funny! poor kid!

I can't sit here and shake my finger at you Granny, I love my own cooking too. When me and Lil Mama's dad first started dating, he was 185. My cooking and his eating got him up to 285. He's shrunk back down to 200 but I aint going through my fluffy phase again. If I had on a white dress, I'd look like a stretch Escalade.

Granny, when you are truly ready to do something about your weight, you will. It took me a while to get to that point, but I woke up one day and said this is the day. I quit drinking diet coke, now drink only water or tea with splenda, and have made major lifstyle changes. I have lost 2 sizes, and am feeling so much better, healthwise. I still have a way to go, but am working on it one day at a time.

I've been trying to gain weight for 25 years...
One underway on the submarine was 97 days. I took some weight gain supplement with me and took that every day along with three (sometimes four) meals. I was taking in over 10,000 calories a day for three months. I gained 1 pound. I actually went to the Navy docs and asked them to run some test or something to make sure I wasn't messed up. They thought I was crazy and they never really checked anything beyond basic blood work.
I finally did put on about 15 pounds when I increased my beer intake :)

I have heard of a veggie and fruit diet where all you eat for two weeks is that, some of the veggies can be a protein as well but no potato. The third week you eat the same, and add a lean meat, chicken fish, and lean pork. No beef. Then fourth week repeat. I thought I would check it out with my doctor when I get the nerve to go again (every time I go he puts me in the hospital) so will see. I do wan to lose at least 80 pounds .yes people I am in doctors term obese by 100 pounds over weight I do wan to see my great granddaughter marry Lord willing or who ever is in charge of that

He hasn't gained a thing. I have also been trying to gaine weight and I have lost 5 pounds in the past 2 weeks. Go figure.

Just dont make me drink beer. I'd faint like an old woman in church from having a flashback. Sweet Minty Jeebus cant take it.

We're actually a "garage neighborhood" Tammie. On our street, if your garage door is open, it means you're accepting visitors. My garage is pretty well hooked up at this point. I do a lot of woodworking, and all of my stuff was getting covered in saw dust, so I took out the work bench and shelves and installed kitchen cabinets along two walls, base and wall cabinets. Now, my stuff, being in the cabinets, stays dust free. For Christmas, my wife got me a flat screen TV for the garage. We then installed a low cut grey carpet and a waist high fridge (kept full of Bud Light and Dr. Pepper). I made a coffee table (engraved with a largemouth bass jumping from the water) and we moved our comfy screen porch chairs to the garage. Oh, I also made a screen door for the garage to keep the bugs out. All this and I can still get my car and my wife's truck in the garage if a bad storm threatens. The neighbors all congregate in one of the garages almost nightly. We're not much on going to bars and I don't drink and drive, so the garages work out nicely.

Gadsden- nice.... Boy, thats kinda gross! Tell ya what, when your doctor tells you that you have diabetes, and you have to cut out pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, and sugary stuff, you'll start to loose weight pretty good. That's what I'm dealing with. It was hard at first, but now I don't really miss anything.

. My children thank god have their fathers genes the never gain weight. I didn’t either, till I was 23. I was expecting my last child and the found I had worms YES people worms. I had been malnourished when I left NY (bad things there my parent bought whiskey and beer before food) and I didn’t know it till I got very sick in my 6 month. After the baby was born they took care of it and the rest is heavy history. Hmm wonder if I can find that little fellow again O/J

Gadseden- that's how I felt. But since that is one of the things that really sends my sugar up, I don't have it very often. When my sugar goes up, it makes me feel so bad.

I bet the majority of you who try and rule this site and post all day long sitting on your butts are fat as sin. Take a walk between posts--maybe it will give you some common sense as well. I don't tolerate obesity. If you are fat, you should not give an opinion because you have no credibility or self-control.

At 48, I'm 5 feet 2 and 108 pounds. I run & lift weights daily, and luckily don't like sweets. But I've been on vegetables, soy, egg whites and whole grains for so long, if I eat fried chicken I double over. And I LOVE fried chicken. Oh, well... my dr. says I'll live to be 90. I hope my last meal is from KFC!!
