State effort to allow offshore drilling

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, July 16, 2008

— Following the news earlier this week that President Bush lifted the executive ban on new offshore oil drilling, state Sen. Robert Ford is leading an effort here.

Ford, D-Charleston, is having a bill drafted that would authorize drilling off South Carolina's coast. A Congressional ban is still in place, however.

The state legislation — which could not be voted on until the Legislature reconvenes in January — adds to the mounting pressure for Congress to authorize the practice.

Exploring for oil offshore has support within the South Carolina congressional delegation, the Legislature and the Republican Party.

Read tomorrow's editions of The Post and Courier to find out whether Ford's colleagues believe his bill will be dead in the water or if South Carolina is prepared to take on the federal government.

I didn't think I would ever say this but "Go Ford go". A democrat and Robert Ford at that, leading the charge for the intelligent response to oil independence and lower oil prices.

One wonders if anybody he is related to will be involved or employed in the fruits of his labor on this issue?
