New laws help Native Americans return to traditions

COLUMBIA During a ceremonial bill signing this afternoon, Gov. Mark Sanford was joined by dozens of South Carolina's Native Americans, many of whom came to the Statehouse in traditional dress. One of two new laws will allow the chief or spiritual leader of a Native American Indian group perform a marriage ceremony. The second related law will allow American Indian artists to use wild turkey feathers in arts and crafts, a practice that was previously banned.
