Former Olympic and professional basketball great Katrina McClain has been traveling all over the country and into Canada for the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA summer camps, so Tuesday's stop at the College of Charleston was extra special. "Of course, it's always special being home," said McClain, a Charleston native. "For me, it's great not having to travel. The traveling really is what takes a lot out of you. But once you get there and see the kids and their reactions, it's wonderful. It's such a great opportunity to help these kids and teach them something. Whether it's just to tell them don't give up or pat them on the back. It feels good to give something back." Approximately 280 kids ranging in age from 6 to 14 turned out for Tuesday's camp at John Kresse Arena. In addition to McClain, the campers received instruction from NBA Hall of Famers Bob Lanier and Dominique Wilkins as well as Teresa Edwards, a teammate of McClain's at the University of Georgia and in the Olympics. The camps focus on more than just developing basketball skills. "The NBA and the WNBA has a grassroots approach in putting on these camps for kids," McClain said. "Basically, we teach them about teamwork, positive attitude and respect. We kind of do a little bit on fitness and nutrition in the afternoon. Basically, we teach them a little bit of life skills while they're exercising." In fact, the full name of the camp is The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Pledge To Be A S.T.A.R. Summer Camp, with the letters in the word star standing for sportsmanship, teamwork, attitude and respect. McClain participated in nine camps last year, and this year has pledged to work 10. Again, she's glad to give back, not only to the game, but her community. "We didn't have that when I was growing up, the opportunity to be taught by people like Bob Lanier," she said. "For these kids to have this opportunity, it's nice to see so many taking full advantage of it."
