MOUNT PLEASANT— Several Wando High School students arrested for the high-profile armed robbery of a Food Lion grocery store are scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday amid fears that prison time or some level of incarceration is possible. "The gist I get is that they all are afraid they are going to jail," said Charleston attorney Michael Uricchio, who represents one of the teens. The eight youths were charged for their role in the August 2006 holdup of the Mount Pleasant store, where they mostly acted as lookouts. Two others who took lead roles in the crime spree were sentenced earlier to 10 years behind bars. Charleston Circuit Court Judge Roger Young will have wide latitude in crafting their sentences. Among his choices are probation, prison or elements of both. Another option is a sentence under the state's Youthful Offender Act, where the Department of Corrections can hold inmates for up to four years the first time they are incarcerated. Inmates participate in a 10-month intensified rehabilitation, a "boot camp," and are eligible for supervised release after successfully completing the program, a spokesman said. Tuesday's sentencing could be a protracted affair as family, friends, clergy and attorneys are expected to fill a courtroom inside the county Judicial Center. Defense lawyers likely will argue that for most of the teens, getting involved in a stickup was an anomaly. "They got caught up in something they never should have been involved in," Uricchio said. The teens pleaded guilty late last year for their role in the Aug. 26, 2006, holdup of the Food Lion on South Morgan's Point Road. They acted as lookouts in cars parked near the store while a classmate wearing an orange mask went inside armed with what later was determined to be a pellet gun. He forced an employee to open a safe and left with money in a duffel bag. The group communicated by walkie-talkies purchased at a retail store, along with the mask and gun. They split the take. The lead culprits in the robbery and associated crime spree, Michael Anthony, 19, and Sean Shevlino, 17, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 10 years. The others pleaded guilty to charges that included conspiracy to commit armed robbery and accessory after the fact. Their sentencing date was put on hold while pre-sentencing reports were done on each teen and to finish education requirements. The teens are: Patrick Brown, Christopher Cousins, Michael Dawley, Max Hartwell, Sam Perez, Graham Stolte, Jackie Washington and Vincent Weiner. All those involved were between 16 and 18 at the time of their arrests and were charged as adults. At least one of the youths might not be in court Tuesday because his guilty plea was heard by a separate judge, his lawyer's office said. Young handled the other pleas. Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson did not want to comment on her sentencing recommendations until the hearing. She planned to offer different statements for each defendant based upon their involvement during the robbery and for their conduct since. Some of those affected by the crime said they will sit on the sidelines while the sentencing plays out. Mount Pleasant Police Chief Harry Sewell said he would not be attending the hearing, and his department is not taking a position on sentencing for the conspirators. They are afraid they will go to jail?,what did they think would happen,a slap on the wrist. Maybe they thought this was a game , and that just because of their age they would be let off with a warning.
I for one hope they all serve some time in jail, they commited a crime, and should have to pay for it. They were not 9 or 10 years old, they were all in High School, and knew
what they were doing was wrong,so stop the crying, pay up for your actions.

What's wrong with these white pieces of scum? Yeah, put them in jail. Your child may be next. I am sorry, but white people act like this--so organized in the execution of their crimes and then don't want to go jail.
I am being sarcastic here, but we all know the truth if the culprits were black, the comments would look just like the one above.

Please do the right thing! These children do not need to be in prison. My guess is that they have already suffered great consequences as a result of their actions. These children need to get on with their lives. Where does all the hatred come from? Why has this taken so long to move thru the courts? Where do the judging, condeming, high and mighty go when they leave this world?

Send them to jail! They knew that it was wrong from the get go! Oh and we have Scarlett Wilson prosecuting ... Oh dang! She is the one who couldnt get the black guy prosecuted for raping the 80 year old woman on James Island. Now he is free as a bird!
These guys are punks and they need to pay the price of being so stupid and immature.

They deserve to go to jail for at least 7 years. They had walkie-talkie's. Premeditation. If you rob a bank but are just the lookout they throw the book at you. No different here. Without all these lookouts, the crime may not have been committed.

They get boot camp? Bull, spread them throughout the prison system so they can not be together until released.
To stop this, show all of us what happens when a "gang" makes plans and executes the plan in a specific sequence.
If not be prepared for more to do the same thing.
Make them pay with time and make it long.

No kidding? Should have used that logic prior to robbing these joints! Throw the book at 'em judge and teach them a lesson, wanna act like thugs then we'll house you like a thug.
In all my teen years of doing stupid crap I never onced said hey lets go rob some places with a toy gun, that'll be fun. When ever these kids start thinking they they are responsible for what happens in their life, not societies woes, pear pressure, etc but them, we'll be much better off.

SCARLET WILSON DID NOT WANT TO COMMENT BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO PLAN A DIFFERENT STATEMENT TO EACH DEFENDANT BASED UPON THEIR INVOLEMENT IN THE CASE. THEY WERE IN IT TOGETHER, LET THEM DO THE TIME TOGETHER. SHE JUST WANTS TO FIGURE OUT WHICH PARENTS HAS THE MOST MONEY.IF THIS WERE SOME YOUNG KID OFF THE STREETS,THEY WOULD ALREADY BE GONE UP THE ROAD.
WHY DO PARENTS SEND THE MESSAGE TO KIDS TO GO OUT AND STEAL,AND SAY "DON'T WORRY WE'LL GET YOU OFF"? THEY NEED TO PAY FOR THEIR CRIME,AND MAYBE JUST MAYBE THEY WILL LEARN A LESSON,OR NEXT TIME MOMA AND DADDY WILL HAVE TO DIG DEEPER TO GET THEM OUT AGAIN!!!I HAVE KIDS AND THEY KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE THEM,BUT THEY ALSO KNOW THAT I BELEIVE IN TOUGH LOVE.TO THESE PARENTS--IT'S ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSES FAULT-RIGHT?????????

They deserve a killin'. Hangin' is too good for these worthless criminals. . .
Make an extreme example out of them and make it very public. Let the P & C do stories about how they've fared in prison. Long prison sentences will be an effective deterent to others who might think about armed robbery.

SCARLET WILSON WOULD'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT I THINK ABOUT HER.
In the case of the elderly woman, exactly how did he get out of that when witnesses saw him on top of that poor old woman? I say to her as I did Islander-if that were her mother she also would be singing a different tune(or maybe not)I still say these little thugs need to serve some time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I personally like the idea of a rehabilitative "boot camp". Ten months (a fair amount of time) being whipped into shape and broken down and rebuilt with strength and character sounds exactly like what these boys need. Any more severe punishment would be overkill. Yes, they committed a very serious crime. But the truth is that these kids can move on to become productive members of society, not young prisoners who rot in a cell on the taxpayers' dime and then when released (in 10 years) will have actually become hardened criminals.

ChasCarolinaGirl and southerngirl45 get the mensa comment awards. First of all why would anyone care what you think about the Solicitor when you spew nothing but vitriol, inaccurate to boot. The rape case was a mistrial and while I am not familiar with the details, I believe the defendant is still being held pending a retrial in the case.
On the case reported above, while we (members of the public) have the luxury of making any comments we choose, the Solicitor actually has a job to do. Inappropriate and poorly timed comments by the Solicitor could affect the outcome of the case and might be considered ethical violations. The Solicitor understands that her job is in the courtroom in this case. I don't know what she will say at sentencing, but I am sure Solicitor Wilson has considered all aspects of the case.
Despite what you think from watching My Cousin Vinny and To Kill a Mockingbird, the Solicitor is NOT the leader of your lynch mob. A tough prosecutor must prosecute based on the facts of each individual case. Things may not be as they appear to you.

Also, you're very lucky to have great kids. I know that good parenting is a factor, but we all know that good parenting does not automatically equal perfect kids. These kids clearly made horrible decisions. I'm sure that they were often overindulged and treated with "kid gloves". That doesn't mean they are awful people -- kids or parents.

By "elitist", tripsa means "liberal". And clearly all liberals hug stuff. In fact, that's why I didn't make it onto this post until 9 o'clock or so. I usually start my day by hugging each tree in my yard. I do have a good many trees, and one of them is a holly tree (ouch), so it takes some time. Now, I'll be back in a bit, I need to make my rounds hugging all of the cars on my street (in hopes to make them nore fuel efficient and enviro-friendly -- I have to hug the SUVs twice). This job as an elitist sure is demanding, but oh-so-huggy and fun!

I guess you have to ask yourself what kind of person do you want in your community in the long run. Should they be punished, of course they should. Should their lives be ruined, of course not. I hazard a guess that the hangem high crowd doesn't have kids or they have long flown the nest. As a parent of a young man, I've made my thirteen year old son read these articles and all of your comments, he should be aware of who a jury of his peers could be. The whole thing is sad, and I don't see any winners in this at all.

it is not about race and really haven't been. We are just tired of all the crime white and black and brown all the pitty pools and excuses and light sentences given to all. We are tired of reading and listening to the news EVERYDAY about scum that will not work, will not take care of their kids will not learn english will not come into this country legally but want all the benefits and our tax dollars pay the way at the same time we cant get any of this help. We are tired of hearing how good these criminals are and how we should feel sorry for them because they have had it so hard. We are tired of children (innocent ones) being molested and abused and the person that did it gets a year or two but the one that kicks a dog gets 10 years. As a whole I am just tired!!!!!!!!!

Our culture is in decline and we should put most of our efforts in strengthening the family, getting rid of the criminals in the political system and put a stop to the garbage that our pop culture in Hollywood is putting out. Movies where the bad guys are the heroes and video games where you can pick up a prostitute and kill her after your finish with her. What kind of upside down world do we live in?

The cornerstone of liberalism is placing people into compartments. It’s this effort to compartmentalize people into groups and not treat them as individuals that is bothering me on this forum. We pass judgment on people on the merits of the case and on an individual basis. Again, the alpha males got what they deserve but condemn this entire group of kids is not what our justice was founded on. Maybe in a socialist country you can do this but not here.

This State sees nothing wrong with throwing youths in adult prisons.
Sooner or later, these youths will be released into society, and let me tell you, they will be influenced by adult child molesters, adult rapists, and so forth.
Now, of course they should be punished. But let me give you all a scenario. I know at least 2 16 year olds who were thrown into adult prisons for minor crimes in this state. They were raped up the butt, and when they were released into society, they had some serious mental issues.
I know them both personally. The punishment of being thrown into an adult prison did not fit the crime.
Do you all remember what it was like to be 16? I do. I was heavily influenced by those around me, and luckily, my friends were not losers who wanted me to keep watch while they robbed someone. However, I did make a lot of mistakes.
These are kids. Let's not forget that.

For several months I've been reading the posts on this web-site. Some of you are very funny! I've been reading people rant and rave over seemingly valid cocerns,non-issues,and whatever they feel is important to them. Some express very liberal views, some very conservative views, as well as views that are tainted with overt hatred and intolerance for other races. Sadly, these seem to elicit the biggest responses. Some seem to want to throw fuel on the flames and seem to want to start a race war, while others tow the line and some seem to wait with baited breath for articles like this to further their beliefs and rhetoric, no matter how skewed or not. This morning, when I read this article, and the comments, I felt compelled to speak up, so I registered.
Greetings to all.
Now, my very first comment: If this crime was their first, then these young men deserve a second chance. I believe, I can undeniably say, that unless Jesus (Lord forgive me) is posting on this web-site, then we all have done something one time or more but just didn't get caught, that was not the smartest thing to do, brightest idea or maybe even something illegal,unsavory,unjust,etc.. that could have had devastating consequences if caught or found out. Therefore, he without sin, cast (throw) the first stone. Secondly, It doesn't matter where they reside or their socio-economic status. They made a dumb decision and I am 100% sure that they are paying for it. these young men, believe it or not, are our future and we as adult have got to ttake a proactive approach on investing in the next generation. this sudden notoriety may have prompted them grow-up and realize that life is precious and should be valued. Maybe this has made them become adamant on pursuing their education and becoming productive citizens. We need not throw them, or any youth away without giving a them a chance to see their mistakes, and hope that they get what they deserve. The 10 month boot camp is sufficient along with restitution, community service and have them visit local schools, including Wando to speak to teens and warn them about their decisions. If you talk to anyone of these teens, I assure you they are very remorseful for what they have done. Lets believe in redemption.
Thanks.

I agree the parents should be held accountable as well. Maybe community service or unpaid bagging at Food Lion. When I was growing up, it wasn't the fear of jail that kept me straight but the fear of disappointing my parents. Parents today, (rich or poor, black or white) just don't make time for their kids. If you are going to have kids you should be responsible for them, then you would make sure you knew who they are with and what they are doing. As far as the teens, I think as mentioned earlier, the Army is a good idea. We need more people in the service. Maybe they could be given the choice of X number years in jail or the same number of years in the Army. This would give them a chance to benefit society as opposed to wasting their lives in jail.

if you understand what i'm saying, what is your problem?
i find no humor in kids having to be on mental medication for the rest of their lives because of what they experienced in adult prisons.
there is a reason why children should not be punished as adults.
the minds of children and teenagers are more vulnerable.
going to an adult prison as a child isn't going to "set them straight" it will scar them forever, and make them more screwed up in the head then when they went in. i speak from what i have seen. now if any of you know any teenagers who went to adult prisons and came out normal, i'd like to hear about it.

granny, I'm not so sure what they are going to get. They could be made examples of just because of where they live.
People should not be sentenced based on their socio-economic backgrounds. Crime is crime no matter where it happens.
They have left out one of the boys who continues to cause problems for others everywhere he goes. I don't know what the deal is with him, but his butt needs to get one of the harshest sentences, as he continues to get into fights and harrass others.
BTW- not that it matters, but there were 3 black boys involved in this crime. Some people have seemed to overlook this fact.
Also, most of these boys come from middle to lower class backgrounds. Not rich, spoiled brats like many seem to believe.
This is also something that should not affect their sentencing. As I previously stated, crime is crime.
One last note: Look who the judge is on this case. He has a very crappy record.

Yeah folks, lets run out and buy that book that tells us to spoil the kids put them in timeout do not spank them cause that makes them mad, dumb down the test in school or take them away cause competition makes them mad, give them space so they can think but they forget to tell you that doesn't mean get out of their lives and let them run free, of course let them disrespect all parents and teachers etc cause they need to express themselves otherwise they get mad, we need to make up at least 3 new disorders a year to explain why these kids are the way they are instead of blaming the real problem on oh my the parents and kids. Lets blame pressue from other kids so we should understand why they go out and rob stores shame on us. We all made mistakes growing up but come on there are no boundries now, anything goes and we just step back and point fingers as far away from the kids and parents. We blame, peer pressue, I have never seen one of these kids do anything they did not want to do, blame the school , I mean they are there to babysit right??? Blame the church cause lord knows you can't force values down my kid, blame the law because they only pick on my kids. And lets not forget, blame the video games because they are so bad for our little angels, but lets give them the money to go buy the game and not say a word. Wow I hope there is more then one book, no way can you read one book and not need more of this great advise.

While our legal system is not the best, it is the best that we have been able to come up with thus far. However, one fact seems to remain true, and that is the influence of money when facing criminal charges. There is little doubt in my mind that if these young men were from families that couldn't afford a 'Broad St.' defense and had to rely on the overworked and overwhelmed public defense system they would have already been in jail. I'm not making this a race related issue, because there are underpriveldged white people in the Tri-county area as well.
I called these people 'young men' because that is what they are in fact. They aren't children in the sense that they are emotionally immature and don't know right from wrong. Rather, they all seem to come from good families and I'm sure that the families are embarassed by the actions of thier sons. I'm also sure they were taught right from wrong and the 'values' of society by their family. Unfortunately, these young men made deliberate decisions to act in a certain manner and for that they must face the reality that any other would face in the same situation.
It is true that prison is full of bad people, but these young men the committed crimes of bad people. I do hope for their sake, and that of their family, that they can one day become productive members of society once they have finished their respective prison terms.

LOL- here you go- start here!
http://www.psychpage.com/learning/librar...
5 Identity vs Role Confusion 13-19 Fidelity Identity Diffusion or Fanaticism
-young adults attempt to develop identity and ideas about strengths, weaknesses, goals, occupations, sexual identity, and gender roles. Teens "try on" different identities, going through an identity crisis, and use their friends to reflect back to them. Marcia offers four resolutions: Identity Achievement (crises and commitment), Moratorium (crises and commitment later), Foreclosure (commitment without crises), and Identity Diffusion (no crises, no commitment)
-if they resolve this crisis, they develop fidelity, "the ability to sustain loyalties freely pledged in spite of the inevitable contradictions of value systems" (can be friends with very different people)
-if they fail to resolve the crisis, they develop identity diffusion; their sense of self is unstable and threatened; too little identity and they may join cults or hate groups, too much identity and they may show fanaticism

Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that any of these teens will see the walls of a jail cell. Solicitor Wilson feels she has the real culprits of this crime behind bars. Although they too were juveniles at the time of their arrests, they were not given an option of being sentenced under the Youthful Offender Act. I agree in that all defendants had different roles in this plan, however, to put 2 children in jail for 10 years to teach them a lesson and then to slap their cohorts on the wrist is as unjust as it gets.
Judge Young is very respectable and I am sure he will do the right thing.

Hi tripsa,
I've read your comments in the past. Some are funny and some I don't agree with, nevertheless, I respect your right to voice your opinion.
I am responding to your comment as follows:
"what about the victims, courts, message they are sending to other youths"
The culprits will have to write a letter of apology to each and every one of the victims and read it to them before sentencing. The letter must include:
1. They must apologize for the pain and suffering they caused them.
2. What they think the victims felt when attacked and how their lives are now, as a result of their actions.
3. Why they felt the need to commit this act.
4. How would they feel if it had been their Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother or relative that was in that Food Lion and was the victim.
5. What have they learned from this event.
and finally, the letter must include a step by step detail on how they intend on proceeding with their life.
Next, they will have to pay a monetary figure, as restitution, to the victims for pain and suffering, counseling, lost wages etc...
Also, the culprits would have to make a monetary payment to the courts for expenses.
Again, they would have to visit local schools, including Wando and speak about decision making and choices that could have a detrimental effect on lives of so many, including their own..

This is the reason God Himself has authorized the use of execution of criminals (Romans 13:4). These criminals need to be executed for the good of the community. Doesn't matter if their mommies traumatized them by making them sit in a time out corner, or if they were trying to find themselves. That is just so much liberal senseless liberal babbling.
A public execution or two would do wonders to reduce the crime rate!

With all due respect, your solution is plain silly and dangerous. The only thing that will prevent others from following their footsteps is a very public, long sentence (preferably death, but a 40 year minimum would be almost as effective). They need to be taken out of civilization long enough for them to be too old to reproduce and make more trash like themselves. The P & C then needs to do stories about how they've been violated in prison. This would be a deterrent to others.

The God of the Bible is the God of ultimate justice. If it were my child, I would feel no different. If one of my children committed a crime of this magnitude, he would deserve either the death penalty or a lengthy prison sentence.
My personal feelings are immaterial in this discussion. Emotion should never be a factor in justice. Emotion only perverts justice. Justice DEMANDS a severe punishment. Rehabilitation should never be the point of the justice system, only justice.

Murder and killing are two extremely different things. Murder is the unjust killing of an innocent person. Killing is morally right when you kill in self defense, in the execution of justice (when you execute a criminal), or in the defense of your country as a soldier. This is what Gods Holy Word (the Bible) teaches. This is the foundation of civilization and the reason our society is in the process of disitigration is because of our perversion of justice with misplaced compassion.

farfallaspeak:
My sense of justice is just fine. As for the Bible, it is the Word of God himself. God does punish ALL sin. That is why Jesus had to die on the cross (he was sinless, and as such was the only one qualified to die for the sins of others). He died to pay the eternal penalty for sin. If you choose to ignore His sacrifice, it is your choice to either repent and believe or spend eternity receiving the punishment for your sins.
On the second point, it doesn't matter whose child commits a serious crime. There must be a severe punishment for serious crimes. Execution of criminals is very effective in deterring crime, especially if you leave their bodies on display for 3 or 4 days as a warning to others. This was very effective in ending pirate raids on our town in the 1700's and would be equally as effective today.
Even when the thief on the cross repented and believed, it meant that God had forgiven him his sins and accepted him into Heaven, God didn't do anything to stop his execution for being a thief, even though Jesus was quite capable of doing so.

Please find a place in your heart to accept whatever the judges' penalty is given to them and try to move on with the rest of your lives. I know it is easy for me to say, and it may be hard for you, but please know that holding on to anger will only perpetuate this senseless act in your minds, hearts and souls over and over again, in essence robbing you of the lives you deserve.
To the young men: admit to your mistakes, your decisions may have affected the rest of your lives, but you have to live with it now. Beg the victims, the judge and God for forgiveness. No one is perfect. God loves all of you and so do I.

You are the one lacking intelligence and good common sense. It is foolish to have compassion for unrepentant criminals. The only thing they deserve is to be made a public example as a warning to others (this IS a Christian viewpoint, try reading the book of Romans chapter 13 where God talks about executing criminals to put fear in others who are tempted to do the same).
Romans 13:4 "For he (civil authorities) is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil."

This act ended the regular pirate raids on Charleston as soon as word got out.

The point I was making was not necessarily about theology. I was simply answering those who seem to think that it is wrong to execute or punish criminals. There is NOTHING MORALLY WRONG with taking a criminal out and executing them at the end of a trial, or putting them in prison until they are at least too old to commit another crime.
It is morally wrong to not severely punish criminals like these. At a minimum, they need to be incarcerated for at least the next 20 years.

Tripsa:
Our Constitution IS based on English law. Our legal system has roots going all the way back to the Magna Carta.
You see proof of this even when you get a will made. It is still called your "Last Will and Testament". This is a redundancy that goes back to the time after the Norman Conquest of 1066 when England was invaded by William the Conqueror from France. This was a foreign occupation which lasted about 200 years, and the terms "will" and "testament" were redundancies from a time when both English and French was used in legal documents (legal documents at that time were bi-lingual). Over that 200 year period, the English language developed from Old English into Middle English.
Our legal system and Constitution was simply a continuation of the English legal system. Our forefathers were not trying to divorce this country from the former system, they were building upon it as their foundation.

Liberals are always in favor of supressing free speach and viepoints that are different than their own. In Canada and Europe liberals have had laws passed which has resulted in pastors being arrested for preaching the truth about homosexuality. In Philadelphia a man was arrested for protesting (legal free speach) against immorality recently. A liberal pacifist Prime Minister in England tried to pacify Hitler in 1938 which allowed Hitler to gain enough power to start WW2 in Europe.
The liberals prior to the Civil War were the same people who were in favor of slavery (remember that the Democratic Party was the party that supported slavery).
In a nutshell, libralism is a poison that leads to the eventual destruction of any society that embraces it.

Plans for 2 actual robbers - 8 look-outs - thought & planning put into this crime down to walkie-talkie communication devices. Perhaps I missed it, but has anyone heard from the parents?
"Lead Culprits" sounds like an oxymoron - it seems each individual in this crime had their designated role - and my opinion would be each should be equally sentenced. If there were no robbers -there wouldn't be any need for look-outs.

The reason for separation of church and state is vividly illustrated by The Mouth. He perverts the word to fit his views. No different from any other zealot or sociopath with an agenda. He takes snippets of bible verses that suit his rationalizations of killing. homosexuality, tithing or whatever rant and plugs them in to his views. Never mind the rest of the bible. Kill 'em all, justify discrimination, marginalize others because you don't fit my point of view. Gotta love tolerance and the bastardization of the bible by some. Then again I just love that old time religion mentality. If ya beat 'em regular then ya won't have any problems. Don't think just beat 'em down.
Romans 13:4 is "bringing down the wrath of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer" It's the Christian view of justice to the the Romans for persecuting them. Christians know that God will have the final say so. The preceding and following verses are telling followers of Jesus to follow the Roman laws to prevent the ire of the Roman authorities to give the Christians moral authority through the use of non-violent protest. Nowhere in Romans Ch 13 is executing some one for stealing or murder mentioned. Read it in context, not from a fundamentalist point of view. Non-violent protest doesn't do a lot for churches that preach fire and brimstone. It's just not that appealing because it requires some thinking and non-violent protests wouldn't be good for the church coffers either.
The message of Jesus was peace through justice(Love) not the Roman thinking of peace through victory which requires a constant victory(war, death and more war/death) to attain peace. It was a radical thought process for the times. That's my take. Duh Mouth likes death and killing. It's a cycle of peace through victory. You kill one then another, then another. Where does it end? Humans have no mechanism to stop themselves from killing each other to extinction as most animals do. The idea of peace through justice(love) would add that mechanism. Not a bad idea and pretty radical.
Punish the kids but killing is a bit OTT.
The death penalty deters nothing. How many innocents are on death row or have been exonerated by evidence withheld? Yes there are no crooked cops/lawyers and the legal system is just splendidly perfect as long as you have money. Duh Mouth has no problem with a person being executed for stealing a piece of candy then? It's stealing right? Or can your far right wing neo-con fire and brimstone PNAC theology make the tie in?
I can see it now:
"Sorry ma'am your 10 year old son stole 2 packs of bubble gum and his friend was looking out. You can claim his body after the hangin' at dawn" "Oh and you can catch the highlights on Live 5 news"
It's no wonder things are the way they are.

stephaniem:
Why would you burden the military with criminals like these? The job of training soldiers and sailors is tough enough when you have willing and disciplined recruits. Giving someone who was involved in armed robbery a firearm is simply insane. You can't have true boot camp training without giving the recruit a firearm. Just imagine that they are given automatic weapons and the training to use it. as soon as they are out of boot camp (which lasts only 2 or 3 months), they will have their government issued weapons available and lots of gas stations and convenience stores within walking distance of base.
Besides, where is the deterent for others? Other like minded criminals will just be saying to themselves "Well, why not rob a gas station, all they're going to do to me is take my drivers license. Big, fat hairy deal!". There has to be a severe, life changing (or ending) price to be paid for committing a crime for effective deterence.

No we aren't very tolerant of poor old Mouth's point of views. Apologies(right) if some of us think that killing and giving distorted views of the bible is so much horse manure. It's much like a few posters on here that label anyone objecting or having a different point of view as liberals and intolerant though JohnQ is a DU bot.

As for your silly suppositions, in the end there is NO question as to their guilt. On a rare occasion, an innocent person is convicted and executed. The solution to this is to make the with holding of evidence or lying under oath a capital crime. This worked well for centuries and was very effective in getting accurate testimony in court.

Mouth,
I am in your corner. My family and I have been victims of crime. It isn't fun. The system blatanly favors the accused. You work hard and some little peice of human filth thinks he has a right to steal your belongings or assault you. My mother was beaten severely by some little thug. I arrived five there 5 minutes after the fact. {I an Ex College Wrestler} would have beaten this little dillweed to oatmeal. We later learned that he had "a drug problem"..boo hoo. Some of these sanctimonious people need the wonderful experience of being a crime victim. Guess what... their tones would change. What if someone pointed a gun in your son's or daughter's faces? I guarantee your average liberal would not settle for them taking diversity or sensitivity training. No... liberals become quite hateful and vindictive if something happens to them. We do not hold grudges but we will not forget this either. These little punks will learn a valuable lesson. My hope is they fly right after this. If..however they decide to continue a life of crime, swift and severe punishment will be all that's needed. I am a parent and I know that the accused's parents did not raise them to do this. But guess what..it's irrelevant. You have to make them pay just like any lother little street thug!

By the way, you have my respect for taking the time to raise your teenagers the right way. That is a tough enough job when there are two parents (My wife and I are raising 3 teenage boys at the moment).

Someone once said that a conservative is simply a liberal who became the victim of a violent crime.
I hope your mom is doing OK and this piece of filth you referred to is safely behind bars for a very long time.

If you believe in loving discipline and are involved with your kids (and I suspect you are), your kids should turn out fine. One of the things that we have always done is to realize that our kids are not perfect and for us to resist getting the "not my child" mentality. Back when I was a teen, the kids that I knew that got into trouble ALL had parents that had the viewpoint that their kids could do no wrong, covered for them and over time their bad behavior escalated into robbery and other crimes. The kids that turned out OK were the ones whose parents were involved in their lives and weren't afraid to discipline them when necessary.

Mouth,
Great Posts! Any time the far left gets a chance to step in crap they do! It is amazing how utterly empty-headed the left really is. Absolutely no empirical thinking skills. Some of these marxist also blast the Good Book! Bet they would not blast the Koran! They would not have the nads to. You see it's the freedom HERE in paradise that hate filled little people to have the right to post on a public forum. This would be available in Cuba where dissenters are SHOT for armed robbery! Liberals always air on the side of the accused. That's why the ACLU is here. They want as many criminals to go free as possible. Someone mentioned the Middle East...well my brother is a missionary in the Middle East. They have an entirely different way of looking at crime/criminals. If you know it's wrong do not do it. If you elect to do it anyway..here are the consequences. You see it's really quite easy. Hence their crime rates are not even 1/1 of 1% of ours. Sex offender's lives are really not worth much. Crimes against children..yikes..Judist Priest! It would be nice if the ACLU would try and open shop over there. They would be seen as defending human scum! Some of these radicals are just frustrated that there is free speech over here!

Did this one get sentenced already?
Perez? Who is Deaton? Was there 10, 11, how many in total?
Posted by ThinkAboutThis on July 13, 2008 at 6:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)
It is doubtful Perez will receive the statutory maximums. His sentencing was put off indefinitely until a report on his background and post-arrest conduct is done for the sentencing judge.
???? is this one off the hook already?

I know that I haven't followed this case like many but due to their ages, I would take away their driver's liscence and give them several years of community service. Drug test them and take away alcohol privileges until 25.
If you put these teens in jail, they will harden more.
To bad they couldn't get thier case dropped like yours,, hun stephenie. By the way you back in business are we???

Some of you must be very lonely people
You crazy evangelical christian extremists really scare me, and you are doing missionary work in the middle east? I heard about you freaks. I think you should just go live in the middle east, where your sense of justice will blend in just fine. Go live in Iran or China, where they have the highest rate of executions in the world. I bet you think women are inferior too, satanic, cursed by the sin of Eve.
I believe in the separation of church and state, so don't go preaching your bull sh*672t bible when discussing the law in my country. Here, the constitution is the law the governs our land, not your holy bible, which is just as much lies as the Koran. You are really no different than the Muslim extremists who believe Islam will rule the world, and the law of the Koran is the only law that exists.
Murder and killing is wrong, and I don't need some loser who wrote a book to tell me that. You cannot justify taking the life of a human being EVER. Even if you think that person is the devil, it is not your place to take the life of another. Perhaps if you carried a life inside of you for nine months and squeezed that 7 or 8 pound life out of your genitals, only to have it nurse off the sweet nectar that your body naturally provides as nurishment for the next year, you might actually appreciate this wonderful gift from God, called life.
If you call yourself a Christian, you will know that Christ taught FORGIVENESS. Do any of you know what Forgiveness is? It's people like you who make people like me really hate Christianity, or any religion at all for that matter. You all take a perfectly good thing that is meant to help people and ruin it.
Scaring kids into doing right is not the way to go. A person should not do the right thing because they are afraid of the consequences. They should do right because they feel it in their heart. Because they get a warm fuzzy feeling when they know they did the right thing. Why does a child cry when he sees an animal hurting? That's called having a heart. Teach children goodness, and they will do good. Some of you Insane Christian Conservativees have so much hatred in your hearts, that you forgot what God is all about, LOVE!
I will pray for your children.

I hope they get probation like the black kids from gadsen green. Both situations are exactly the same, 2 robberies, both commited with a pellet gun. The only difference, the kids from Gadsen green discharged their weapon.
I just can't believe the difference in sentences for same crimes. One group goes to jail the other probation.
Don't get me wrong the kids certianly deserve jail time, I just can't believe the one group doesn't get any, and this group does.
That should be the story.

farfalla -- I see NO anger in your post. I do see -- IMO --
logic and rational thought. I do also realize that those who vehemently disagree with you will call you angry for your arguments. Although, I might be more inclined to think the person calling for the public execution of teenage lookouts somewhat is ever-so-slightly angry (although it's hardly noticeable).

Abortion is a whole other topic.
Nobody "SUPPORTS" abortion. People support the choice, thus we call them PRO CHOICE.
If I had a choice, no I wouldn't have one, but each situation is different.

Mouth of the South, you make a good arguement against my post. I just think that prison time in an adult facility will cause more damage as the rape statistics are high. I do think they should be in a separate facility...even minimum security where they go home to sleep there but work outside would benefit them more. Taking away privileges from many for crimes should help. We already take away gun and voting rights for felongs, we could take away driving rights and alcohol for a couple years for violent misdeamnors.
Jeff61, anyone has the right to defend their property and I had to pay out 50,000 even though the guy I shot beat up several women in the past. I even asked for a restraining order against him while evicting him and no one came to my help.
Look at the poor elderly woman who was raped and the man gets acquitted. Women are still inferior to men and the double standard still applies that a man can rape/molest a woman and you have to prove it but if a woman shows has topless photos of her and soberly charges what most women give away drunk....she is of low morale character and deserves to die. We are high on the list for criminal domestic violence and juries still have more trouble convicting rapists than leisure activities. Gambling is another activity that should be legalized.

Mouth do you have anything else to add to tripsa's comments besides an LOL? He needs help. When you can't refute the facts or post an LOL works wonders for some. Mouth, silly suppositions? When you can't refute or answer the facts call things names. I and a few others have plenty of empirical thinking skills. It's obvious you and a few others have learned to beat others opinions down around her using the bible as your back up. I'm glad the founding fathers thought of the idea for a separated church and state. You and your type are dangerous.
Yes make lying a capital crime so we rid ourselves of ourselves. Man has no in-built mechanism to prevent self annihilation but it must be a science issue. You as a probable fundamentalist have no need for science. Hence talking with you is useless. You'll dismiss the idea as mere supposition and heresy. Probably not worthy of discussion. The Spanish Inquisition and the burning of witches did wonders now didn't it for curing lying?
Some one else said it around here, when you think the left is wacko it really doesn't take long for our friends on the far right to answer back with equal lunacy.
