Millis wins Golden Pen award for June

Sunday, July 13, 2008

J.M. Millis of Mount Pleasant has won The Post and Courier's Golden Pen award for June for her letter to the editor titled "Need bike racks."

Ms. Millis' letter pointed out that rising gas prices affect "every aspect of our lives," and that the number of bicycle paths in our community is also rising. But, as she wrote:

"There is a big problem with riding your bicycle around town. When you ride to the grocery store, pharmacy or wherever, what do you do with your bicycle when you get there? We all know that you cannot simply park it and leave it. When you come out of the store, it will not be there."

Ms. Millis' letter concluded: "If more businesses would place bicycle racks in a central place so that you could safely lock your bicycle, I believe that more folks would ride to save gas. I know that I would."

Golden Pen winners are invited to an annual luncheon with the editorial staff.
