Utility seeks input on coal-fired plant

Staff report
Thursday, July 10, 2008

In the aftermath of a federal court ruling that struck down the Bush administration's mercury pollution rules, state health officials plan to hold a public meeting July 22 to gather comments on Santee Cooper's proposed coal-fired power plant in the Pee Dee region.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at Hannah-Pamplico High School, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control said Wednesday.

Santee Cooper officials said the utility will install new equipment that will remove more mercury pollution, but conservation groups say the plant still will dump significant amounts of mercury into an area with serious mercury problems.

I vote we trade all our coal in the US to China for some more junk to stock the shelves at Wal-Mart. That way, they can have power to run their economy, and we can sit in the dark conserving power while we celebrate out new 7 dollar shirt made by child labor in a sweat shop. Where will we get our 7 dollars? In a loan from China.

We should stop all nuke plants too, because building one now would not bring new power to the market for 5-10 years. Frankly, we could all be living a solar powered world by then, riding around in our solar powered cars and trains. That is a risk I am willing to take.

For those scared to drill offshore, I agree. After all of the oil wells in the gulf that were broken in half by the hurricanes of the 2000's.... how sad... all of that oil washing ashore, oil as far as the eye could see. Do you know what I would do if oil washed up in my yard....? I would start putting it in barrels with my bare hands, scooping it up with my hands as if they were a cup.....celebrating the great blessing that was giving to me. Free oil. If it were only true....

People, lets wake up and smell the burnt oil and coal. We have gotten by on these fossils for too long. It is time we turn off our air conditioners and start walking down I-26 to work. Let's buy those solar panels so we can power our homes in the middle fo the day long enough to run a hairdryer at noon for a few minutes while we are at work. Lets cast aside the shackles of eletric power and transportation and focus on what is important.... that we save our oil, save our coal. If we lead by example, the rest of the world will follow. They will stop using power and stop driving as well. We can all walk to work and shower in the Ashley River.

How many resources do we waste on tampons and razors? Why, only a 100 years ago women had hairy legs, armpits and other things I would rather not discuss. Imagine the plastic, paper, and steel we could save. Do you shower everyday? If so, you are wasting water. Why, a queen of England from the 1700's once said she showered once a month, even if she didn't need it (History Channel, Modern Marvels, Bathroom Tech). We are capable of living like this. We have in the past, and we will in the future.

Coal, oil, anything that burns is a blight on our great Earth. The choice is clear, we should sit back and wait for the power fairy to show up and provide for us.
