North Charleston police said dirty, rusty clothing helped them connect two men to the theft Monday of $4,000 worth of rusty scrap metal from an iron works storage area.

Anthony Terry Wright, 46, of Norwood Street, and Terry May Danner, 51, of English Street, both in North Charleston, were being held Tuesday at the Charleston County Detention Center on grand larceny charges.

The owner of Cooper Iron Works at 2341 Spruill Ave. reported the theft of at least 50 pieces of solid iron plates and other scrap metal at 8:30 a.m. A witness told the owner he had seen two men loading the metal into a green minivan a couple of hours earlier.

The officer who took that report was looking for the van and checking recycling locations when he heard another officer leave the jail after booking two men caught stealing aluminum and loading it into a green Plymouth Voyager minivan.

The aluminum, worth $100, was stolen from a construction site at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center on the former Charleston Naval Base, a report stated.

A witness to the theft called Homeland Security, which detained the men for North Charleston police.

There was no scrap metal in the van, but officers said they found the Cooper Iron Works metal outside Wright's apartment building.

Wright, who had been released from jail on the aluminum theft, was standing nearby, a report stated.

Police arrested Wright again and returned him to the county jail, where Danner was still being held because he was wanted on an unrelated warrant, a report said.

Both men were rust-covered and dirty, police said.

There is another way to earn money from scrap metal.

There are a couple of people I see with pick-up trucks or trailers who ride around the neighborhoods the day before trash pick up & collect the metal trash people have put at the road side.

As long as they don't spread my trash pile out all over my yard or the street while they are looking for the metal, I am happy for them to take what they can use productively or turn into extra cash for themselves.

Of course, collecting metal for scrap this way takes more time & effort than stealing it from a recycle or metal business.

"Both men were rust-covered and dirty, police said."

I don't know why that tickled me...lol

But damn they're stupid. I've seen people around my way do the same thing you speak of abitskeptical. Hell, that helps ME out!

The theft was reported at 8:30 am. and the witness saw them load the scrap two hours earlier, at 6:30 am. when most law abiding people are GOING TO WORK AT AN HONEST JOB!
These guys like scrap metal, let's give them some leg irons and a sling blade and give them some honest work cleaning out ditches. BRING BACK THE CHAIN GANGS!

Heavy metal takes it's toll again.

Maybe they need the money to buy soap. It is so expensive these days. (rolling eyes)
Seriously, people are going to steal most anything they can get their hands on if they are that type.
My nephew lives way out in the boonies, and someone came when he was at work and stole hundreds of dollars of scrap copper.

Sunday is "shopping day" downtown for trash peddlars. I just wish they would take paint so that I wouldn't have to take it to the dump on Bees Ferry Rd.

It gets even more interesting when the college kids are leaving at the end of June and are discarding large amounts of furniture.

Wonder if they've been to Walmart on Rivers lately. They had to shut down their meat section because someone stole the copper tubing for the cooling system.

Bums instead of working like everyone else these jokers want to steal copper wow.

Damn, are you serious BigSarge? One of our clinics had to shut down for a week because some fools stole the entire unit, took the copper tubing and brought the unit back.

Even tho both of these losers need to be strung up, the folks at the scrap yards that buy from these two are just as guilty, there is no way they dont know when someone brings in this type of scrap that it is not stolen, same as copper from ac units etc. The cops need to step up and start stinging these scrapfolks, stealing copper pipes from one house can cost untold money and nothing is done except your wallet gets lighter and your insurance goes up. Not to mention what the water damage does to a house.

abitskeptical,

The same thing happens in my neighborhood and, for the most part, I say more power to them! However, just like everything else, there are a few that try to ruin it for the rest of the scavengers. There are a few simple rules that these folks need to understand:

1) If you have to spread the trash out in order to retrieve the parts you deem of value, re-stack the refuse (on the same property that it came from) when you are finished.

2) If you remove an appliance from a curb so you can strip the valuables at your leisure, YOU now own that appliance! Don't expect to grab the goodies and then return the hulk to the original property the day after trash day so that it sits there for another week on my curb. I take pictures and call the police when you do that to me! It's called illegal dumping! The fine sort of negates the few dollars you got for stripping out that copper wire/motor now doesn't it?

3) Don't ever again pound on my door asking about missing parts from something I have placed at the curb as trash. It is trash, not a yard sale!

That is all I ask.

auger "It is trash, not a yard sale." OMG that is so funny. I almost fell backwards out of the chair. Of course this chair needs to be sitting on the curb anyway.

drp7773 While I agree about these 2, I disagree about the obviousness of the scrap being stolen. My grandfather salvaged all kinds of metal every day but sunday. Not because of Jesus, but SPORTS. LOL. This is after retiring from the US Navy and then the shipyard. When they tore down the old Navy hospital tons of that stuff was dropped off to him to be stripped and sold for scrap. So not all scrappers are thieves.

Siri, This has happened to me TWICE in the last three years! Once they wanted the carburators for a cracked outboard motor powerhead I was throwing away, and the second time another person wanted the rings for a pair of useless split rim wheels I placed at the curb! That's why they were there! I didn't have the split rings! I love the idea of recycling, just don't be an idiot (or burden) in the process!
