COLUMBIA A group studying ways South Carolina can save consumers money on energy costs, reduce emissions and promote economic opportunities is preparing to report its findings. The Climate, Energy and Commerce Advisory Committee is due to submit its report for public feedback before the end of the month. Created by Gov. Mark Sanford's executive order, the group has been developing a list of 50 recommendations since February 2007. If all the recommendations are put in place, the state would be able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 to below 1990 levels. "I think that's a strong step," said outgoing state Rep. Ben Hagood, R-Sullivan's Island, who serves as committee chairman. "The governor asked us to look carefully at how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in South Carolina and at the same time increase opportunities for growing our economy and also to have a sound energy plan." A draft version of the report is posted at the committee's Web site, www.scclimatechange.us. For more information on the story, read The Post and Courier on Saturday.
