Passersby stopped, climbed onto a car that had rolled on its side Wednesday and pulled a woman out through a shattered window after the car collided with an SUV at Rivers Avenue and Hawthorne Drive.

Passersby pull a woman from an overturned vehicle Wednesday after it collided with another on Rivers Avenue. The woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Sabrina Richards, whose GMC Jimmy landed passenger-side-down after the 2:40 p.m. collision, was released from Roper Northwoods hospital after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, North Charleston Director of Public Safety Communications Spencer Pryor said.
He said Richards was charged with failure to yield right of way.
Pryor said a red SUV was headed north on Rivers Avenue when several cars attempted to cross the highway at Hawthorne Drive. The SUV and the Jimmy collided. The driver of the SUV was not injured.
Among motorists who witnessed the wreck was Putu Johnson Gray, who lives near where the accident occurred. He pulled off the road and was the first to climb onto the passenger side of the car in an attempt to communicate with the Jimmy driver and render aid.
A second man joined Gray at the highest point of the flipped car and together they lifted Richards out through the passenger side window. After allowing her to sit momentarily on the side of the car, numerous passersby together carried Richards to a grassy area away from the wreck.
The impact of the two vehicles was heard inside nearby office buildings.
Gray said the collision seemed to be unfolding in slow motion. He was not sure at first whether his own car had been hit.
"It was like a movie, like we were watching it in slow motion," Gray said. "The first thing I thought is that she might have hit me."

This is what happens when others don't pay attention to what they are doing. I can betchya that she was on the cell phone while this occurred. I have had numerous close calls like that while driving. People don't pay attention to what they are doing while on the phones. Cells should be banned while driving. If I have a call either I will ignore it or I will pull over and talk if it is going to be a long conversation. If it requires a yes or no I give my answer then hang up. People hate it when I do that, but they know the rules. While I am driving there isn't any talking. If i need to make a call the passenger makes it for me.

A big thanks to Putu and the other good people. It's wonderful to hear of people coming together to help someone, rather than just watching and doing nothing to help.

Ok so which is it. You think they should banned while driving but yet you do it anyway. You say people don't pay attention while on the cell but you admit doing it anyways and it seems you make yourself out to be the exception.

Glad to see that good samaritans are still around.
In case they don't know it, a GMC Jimmy is also considered a SUV. Not that it makes any difference, just thought I'd point that out.

Good Job to the good samaritans.
Is it just me or is this article really hard to read? As RTC said, BOTH vehicles wre SUVs. In addition to that, the article saying the vehicle came to rest on the passenger side and then states that Puto Gray climbed ON to the passenger side.
I'm confused.

I'm glad she is ok and I am glad that people weren't just being nosey and actually stopped to help her.
I'm surprised no one at the P&C reported on the accident on River Road last night, about 8-9 hispanic dudes slammed into a tree. The tree is still intact...the Tahoe..mmm..not so much. From the trajectery (sp) of the debris, the driver had to be going at a high rate of speed.
Damn, I watch too much Forensic Files...

I'm glad everyone involved is okay. Good job to the two people that helped this lady out of her wrecked vehicle!

Jeff, wouldnt surprise me to be honest. It happened close to about 9 last night, the curve where they wrecked is known as "dead man's curve #2". My cousin died on that very same curve, driving fast car flipped over, he flew out, car landed on top of him. But the way the cops and ambulances were flying out there, you would have thought the president got hurt. AND it was a 1 car accident.

And I say that it was a good thing that there were no serious head, neck or spinal injuries that a passer-by could not possibly have known how to treat unless they are/were trained in emergency triage. Had there been a difficulty, she could very well at this moment be hospitalized with much more serious and life changing complications.

I agree with you 100% jeff61, cell phones are a major disration. I have avoided about 20 accidents in the last 2months, & guess what? it was some idiot either dialing or texting, I guess the message was more important than me & my kids life!! If you can't scratch your head & think, STAY THE HELL OFF OF THE PHONE!!!!!

Please don't try to be a hero and pull people from a wreck. Leave that to the paramedics. You never know if someone has an injury...

Since my recent car accident with a teenager, who was also talking on a cell phone. I would actually prefer that most people who do have to talk for any reason, purchase a blue tooth device. This wonderful, yet inexpensive device allows you to talk with both hands on the steering wheel, it also allows you to make, and answer calls without having to use your cell phone.
I’m glad no one was seriously hurt.

Palmetto- I'm glad no one was seriously injured. i was just saying that there have been several items in the news where passers by just watched and did nothing to help. I would assume ( I know, never a good thing ) that those people who pulled her out had spoken to her and made sure she was not hurt before pulling her out. Maybe there was a concern of the car catching on fire with her trapped inside. I don't know. But I certainly know enough not to move anyone who may be seriously injured.

I saw a wreck on Rivers recently. A red car collided at an intersection with a green truck. The driver of the red car had run the light, so it was her fault, and the whole front end of her car was destroyed.
Everybody seemed OK, but as I went over to see if I could do anything, the driver of the truck sped away. The accident wasn't even his fault, and the whole driver's side of the truck was smashed up, so I guess he had something to hide. Probably an unliscensed illegal alien...

CB, I thought the same thing. If the Jimmy was passenger-side-down, how did the rescuers climb on that side?

Cell phone or not, too many people drive crazy around here anyway.
We ALL should slow down and practice road courtesy. It's absolutely amazing how many idiots will drive downright recklessly just to get one car length ahead of you.
We ALL need to stop driving like IDIOTS!
