Boaters encouraged to be safe this holiday weekend

The Post and Courier
Thursday, July 3, 2008

To report boating violations such as reckless operation or an intoxicated boat operator contact DNR toll-free, 24 hours a day, at 1-800-922-5431.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division will conduct courtesy safety inspections at the following public boat landings this weekend from 9 a.m. to noon. The statewide list is available at the DNR Web site.

Friday: Buck Hall Landing and County Farm Landing

Saturday: Canal Lakes Resort and Wappoo Cut

Sunday: Remley's Point Landing and Folly Landing

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will conduct courtesy safety inspections at various landings this weekend.

Officials said anyone who volunteers for the inspections will not be ticketed for violations officers may find.

Thousands of boaters are expected to be out in Charleston Harbor Friday for the fireworks show.

Officers from both agencies will be patrolling the waters in force this weekend to both educate boaters and ticket anyone breaking the laws. They said their main objective is to make sure everyone has a safe holiday.

"Most importantly, use good, sober, common sense when operating in the water this weekend and every weekend," said Sgt. Angus MacBride of the Department of Natural Resources.
