Bryan Powell shows off the new state record African pompano caught June 16th.

Pompano record falls twice in one month

A Mount Pleasant angler set a new state record for African pompano June 16, just 13 days after the former record was trumped.

Bryan Powell caught the 43-pound, 8-ounce African pompano near the Comanche reef, in about 100 feet of water off Charleston. The former record had been beaten by angler Steve Bagnall of Vancouver, Wa., on June 3. Both anglers were on charter fishing trips with local captains.

Powell, 38, headed offshore with Capt. David Yates of Yates Sea Charters (charlestonfunfishing.com), on his twin-engine 31-foot Contender center console. Powell landed the pompano in about 20 minutes. He was using a 7-foot Star rod paired with a Baitrunner Shimano reel. The big fish hit a menhaden.

Cerveza wins again in Charleston tourney

Cerveza, a 62-foot sportfisherman homeported at Pirate’s Cove, N.C., captured its second straight win in the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina Billfish Tournament in late June.

Owned by Tom Russell and captained by Butch Davis, Cerveza was once again making a Charleston stop on its way back from the Bahamas Billfish Championship, a series Cerveza won this year.

Cerveza released 11 sailfish over two days of fishing out of Charleston. Rascal, owned by Norman Pulliam of Spartanburg, released nine sailfish and one white marlin. Both Cerveza and Rascal got an assist from Mother Nature when small craft warnings forced the cancelation of the final day of fishing and left them with the points lead.

Cerveza won $82,740 from a tournament payout of $22,990. Rascal won $49,061. The final two Governor’s Cup tournaments are the HMY-Viking MegaDock Billfishing Tournament out of the Charleston City Marina July 9-12 and the Bohicket Marina Invitational Fishing Tournamenton July 23-26.

Charleston boat wins big bucks at Big Rock

Owner John Darby and the crew of Artemis gave Charleston its second straight win in the 50th Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, held out of Morehead City, N.C., in June.

Those onboard during the battle included Darby, Capt. Bucky Copleston, angler Darryl Reyna, J.C. Darby, Eric Burn, Robbie Freeman, Jim Bryan and Michael Provow.

This was the second straight year a Charleston boat has prevailed in the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. Last year, BakBar, owned by Neal Baker and Billy Barnwell, earned $800,839 for a 613-pound blue marlin.
