North Charleston area ranked in nation's Top 10 cottage communities

For more information about the top 10 cottage communities, visit Cottage Living's Web site.

The 3,000-acre footprint around the old Navy base in North Charleston has been named a Top 10 cottage community in the nation by Cottage Living magazine for its adaptive reuse of existing buildings and in-fill development.

The magazine said North Charleston's historic core had mounting problems in the 1990s that included deteriorating prefab-home neighborhoods, run-down public housing projects, outdated utilities and a decommissioned Navy base.

"Today, those 3,000 acres — dubbed Noisette, after an 18th-century botanist — are being reshaped in a massive effort that may indeed result in a model new city, where sustainability and quality of life are the top priorities," the magazine said of the city's No. 9 ranking.

The magazine gives its annual Top 10 ranking to the communities that "make us feel deep-down good."

Major redeveloping areas included within the 3,000-acre site are the new Oak Terrace Preserve subdivision near Park Circle, Garco Village near Olde North Charleston, the old Navy base, I'On's new Mixson Avenue project and Horizon Village.

Criteria include styles of homes with unifying design elements and walkable streets, the people who live there and worked to change the area, the concepts behind the changes and the uniqueness of the homes.

North Charleston will officially announce its ranking in a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 4900 LaCross Road.

What the freak does the man's tummy have to do with a Kudos from a magazine or the fact that he is mayor? Yes we have high crime in NORTH CHARLESTON- but park circle is certainly not the deadliest community. (the stat you are trying to quote is the one that says we have the 7th highest crime rate by the way) Yes our mayor likes to eat, does that make him a bad mayor? Do the negative nancies ever consider the fact that people actually live here and like it? Despite all the horrendous crime people like to pretend only happens here (which we know is a lie) we love it- we are proud of park circle and our neighbors. There is crime all over this town, not JUST in North CHuck. We in park circle are lucky to be able to walk to shops and restaurants, each others houses for dinner, and to gorgeous CITY-RUN parks. Your negativity won't bring us down! GO PARK CIRCLE!!! When crime hits close to home, we get together and raise money to help the victim. That's just how we roll!

ParkCircle4Ever is right. The secret is finally getting out about how great the Park Circle community is. Those who work, live or visit there have known this for years. There are many negative posters on this site that paint North Charleston with a broad brush. There is crime everywhere and we have our share in certain pockets of North Charleston. But so does "south" Charleston, West Ashley, Mt. P and Berkeley county. North Charleston (especially the Park Circle area) is a progressive, forward thinking community with lots of character. Congrats to Park Circle on this national recognition.

Does a bullet proof vest come with a new house? The area is one of the highest crime areas in the country. The store owner in old North Charleston was robbed more than once and was also shot.

Hey, fill-er-up at Golden Corral all you want. It speaks to his character (doesn't care about his body or health apparently...does he truly care about other things?)

While Noisette is a commendable project, the leadership in N.C. is horrendous & needs changing. That cannot be disputed.

I'm just sayin...
