Position changes afoot at Clemson

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, February 27, 2008

CLEMSON — At 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, Rendrick Taylor looks more like a linebacker than a receiver.

He'll get a long look at the former position starting next week, when Clemson begins spring practice. Taylor, who's played receiver his first three years with the Tigers, is slated to spend the first eight sessions at linebacker.

Clemson's linebacking corps is thin after the loss of seniors Nick Watkins and Tramaine Billie. Antonio Clay might not return for his senior season because of emotional issues, and coach Tommy Bowden has yet to make a declaration on the status of Cortney Vincent, who was arrested for DUI in December.

Taylor has struggled with injuries throughout his career with the Tigers. He had 25 catches for 259 yards last season, when he missed four games with a partially torn hamstring.

Taylor's move isn't the only position switch slated to occur when Clemson starts practice March 8. Defensive lineman Jock McKissic will experiment at offensive tackle, where the Tigers are replacing starters Barry Richardson and Christian Capote. Sadat Chambers is expected to return to safety after spending last season at running back. Michael Wade is back at quarterback after spending last season at safety.

The coaching staff has also debated moving receiver Brandon Clear to safety, though a decision hasn't been made.

Taylor has played in 27 games and started seven in his career with the Tigers, catching 46 passes for 480 yards and one touchdown. He played receiver and running back at Marlboro County High.
