Outgoing sheriff defends practices
Alan Hawes The Post and Courier
Dorchester Country Sheriff Ray Nash
SUMMERVILLE — Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash sits in his deserted offices on a Friday evening and shakes his head in frustration. He's late for a dinner engagement, but that's not what's eating him. It's the swirl of sniping and speculation surrounding his announcement last week that he will retire next year at the end of his third term. "It's just relentless," Nash says, bowing his head and pinching the bridge of his nose. Nash's 11-year tenure has been marked by accomplishment and change in this growing county, home to about 119,000 people. But he also has attracted considerable controversy, almost from the moment he hung a Ten Commandments plaque in his office and declared that it was God's will that he serve as sheriff. And the past year has proved to be particularly bruising for the 47-year-old sheriff. He was confronted by one crisis after another, incliding inmate escapes and a special audit that discovered tens of thousands of dollars missing from the jail fund and suspected embezzlement by a subordinate. Week after week, the hits kept coming, providing fresh fodder for critics who have long taken issue with Nash's management style, spending habits and priorities. They bristle at his faith-flavored approach to law enforcement that some foes say blurs the line between church and state. The Internet bubbles with bloggers and posters who question the sheriff's links to controversial evangelists and try to paint his character-training initiatives as thinly veiled proselytizing, an attempt to infiltrate law enforcement with cult-like tactics. Defending his record Nash, a devout Christian, calls such claims "silly" and says he has never tried to convert employees. He blames his opponents for trying to distort his record, taint his image. He says he has long been the target of an entrenched old guard in Dorchester County that wants him out of the way. "I hold this office, and there are political factions that want to control the sheriff's office like they control other components of county government," he says. "I stand in their way of doing that." Nash doesn't name names, but he is clearly referring to supporters of L.C. Knight, a retired State Law Enforcement Division supervisor whose ubiquitous campaign signs dot every corner of the county. Knight, whose father was sheriff for 28 years, lost a 2004 primary to Nash by less than 400 votes. The race was emblematic of Dorchester County politics, tugging at old family loyalties and new political alignments. Nash's critics say he is employing the same strategy he has used for years: make excuses and deflect blame onto others. They say Nash likely decided to retire because he recognizes that his base of support has eroded in the wake of the audit and other missteps. They point out that the criminal portion of the audit is still pending and that more bad news is possible. Bowing out now allows him to leave on his terms rather face a potential defeat, they say. "I think he saw the handwriting on the wall," says County Council Chairman Chris Murphy, who has tangled with the sheriff over spending. "The audit results have borne out that the office is just in a financial mess. He has not done a good job of managing the finances, and he's not managing the day-to-day operations as he should. ... I would not survive a week in business practicing the accounting procedures practiced at the sheriff's office." Still, Nash maintains ardent supporters who see him as an earnest and charismatic lawman who values strong character and keeps crime down. Ron Turner, a Summerville real estate agent and mortgage broker who has been active in Nash's campaign, describes the sheriff as "a great cop" and "a man of great integrity." He says Nash's critics are just blowing matters out of proportion to gain political advantage. "Anywhere you go and do a forensic audit, you're going to turn up crap," he says. "You have less than honest people all around you." Nash has said Capt. Arnold Pastor, his former jail chief, diverted checks from a jail fund into a personal account. That account shows expenditures to a motel, $2,241 to Carnival Cruise Lines, a $599.45 cash card withdrawal on the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship Sovereign of the Seas and more than 50 ATM withdrawals. Pastor has not been charged. Nash has said SLED is waiting for the complete audit to bring the case to a statewide grand jury. Auditors also are looking into at least $65,000 that Nash paid to S&R Promotions over the past two years to maintain the department's computer system. S&R is owned by the brother-in-law of Nash's administrator, Franklin Smith. Nash says he has taken responsibility for the lack of internal controls that allowed jail money to be siphoned off and is working to correct the situation. He says he has spoken with the auditor and is confident the audit will show that payments to S&R and other expenditures were completely proper and above-board. Some have concerns Some former deputies say Nash has paid too much attention to his character-training program and too little to daily operations. They say he isolates himself and relies on an inner circle of advisers with little law enforcement experience to run things. They point out that Nash himself spent little time as a street cop before becoming a police chief at age 23. He never served as a detective. Former sheriff's Sgt. Tony Phinney says Nash's chief of staff, John Barnes, has never been a certified police officer. Smith, Nash's administrator, went through the training academy after he was hired but has never worked a day on the street, he says. "He's never fought with a drunk, never answered a domestic call," Phinney says. "These are people making a lot of the decisions. ... And it shows over time." Phinney and another former deputy filed a federal lawsuit three years ago alleging that Nash forced them from their jobs for supporting Knight's 2004 election bid. Nash denied that was the case. The suit was later settled. Nash attributes the complaints to disgruntled employees. He says he stands by his qualifications and those of his commanders. Barnes is a proven leader who once ran the Navy's entire corrections system. Smith is a former business owner and consultant who spent years working alongside police officers during character-training programs, he says. Besides, Nash says, he doesn't just depend on those two men, but other veteran lawmen in his staff. Emotionally invested Nash insists his office is well-run. And while the ongoing audit played a role in his decision to retire, Nash says, it was far from the deciding factor. He says he went through an agonizing eight-day period of introspection last month in which he grappled with his options. He was emotionally invested in the job but knew he would be eligible for retirement benefits soon and wanted to spend more time on his Police Dynamics character-training seminars. He also had grown weary of the amount of time he had to devote to politics, and he worried about the toll it was taking on his family, he says. The scales finally tipped when Folly Beach Public Safety Director Terry Boatwright asked for his blessing to enter the race, Nash says. He had run against Boatwright in a 1996 primary; knew him professionally; and considered him a man of great character, a successor he could be comfortable with. "If he had not entered the race, I would still be in the race," Nash says. Nash says he knew that his opponents would try to tie his announcement into the ongoing audit to give the impression that he was running from controversy. He says that is not the case. He wanted to bow out early enough to give Boatwright time to run an effective campaign, he says, and he didn't want to continue accepting contributions if he wasn't going to run. Crime down, convictions up Knight has little to say about Nash's decision, other than that he is prepared to do battle against any candidate. Nash's move provoked varied reactions from other law enforcement leaders. Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon says he wasn't surprised that Nash decided against running again, given the "public problems" he faced and his ongoing battles with council. "But I'm satisfied Ray is a good person and he has done a lot for Dorchester County." North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt wasn't sure what to think. A portion of Zumalt's city extends into Dorchester County, but he says he's never gotten to know Nash. Zumalt says Nash has been invited on several occasions to attend meetings of area law enforcement leaders, but he never shows. "I don't know much about him." The past year threatens to become an unfortunate coda to a high-profile career launched when Nash became a police dispatcher while still in high school. He served as a police chief in Irmo and Summerville before becoming sheriff in 1997. He immediately placed an emphasis on character and high standards. Among other things, unmarried employees were forbidden to live with a person of the opposite sex. Over his tenure, Nash says, crime has dropped, the conviction rate has gone up and he has overseen numerous improvements to equipment, operations and technology. At the same time, he has repeatedly clashed with County Council over his budget overruns, which he attributes to underfunding, unexpected expenses and unpredictable overtime. He also has been knocked on occasion for not paying enough attention to the less populated, northern end of the county. "I think he's been a good sheriff," Councilman Larry Hargett says. "I think he's brought us a low crime rate, and he's certainly brought character to the sheriff's office." Character initiatives Nash has attracted broad interest with his character-building initiatives and has lectured around the country and overseas on the topic. He leads seminars for other law enforcement agencies as an independent business through his Police Dynamics Institute, which also sells videos and instructional materials. Nash requires his deputies to go through character-training sessions, but deputies don't have to pay for them or buy materials. At the sessions they receive educational booklets and talk about one of 49 character qualities. The qualities, such as deference, faith and obedience, are part of the "Character First!" program created by the Character Training Institute in Oklahoma City. Nash insists that it improves morale and job performance, and the program has drawn praise from segments of the community as well as several deputies. Others consider it a waste of time that could be better spent fighting crime. One former deputy described it as "fluff." Some critics also say the character qualities sound a bit too much like the "Commands of Christ" promoted by Bill Gothard, founder of the Institute in Basic Life Principles, a Christian evangelical organization headquartered in the Chicago suburb of Oakbrook, Ill. While Nash has said his programs include material "inspired by Bill Gothard," neither Police Dynamics nor "Character First!" materials contain direct religious references. Former detention officer Chris Pia says he is a Christian, but he was troubled by the religious overtones that seemed to permeate the training and other aspects of the sheriff's office. When he applied for a job, Pia says, a jail supervisor encouraged him to write Nash a letter explaining how his religion would guide his approach to law enforcement. Pia, a retired New York City police officer, got the job but was fired about six months later for insubordination after he refused to reveal the source of a complaint about a possible medical infection at the jail. Web site comments Pia recently has posted several comments and links on Charleston.net trying to draw attention to Nash's supposed ties to evangelical leaders. One recent post highlighted a written plea from Christian Exodus president Cory Burnell to donate to Nash's re-election campaign. Burnell founded a movement to convince conservative Christians to move to South Carolina so they can take over local politics. In his plea, Burnell praised Nash's leadership, but urged followers to donate in denominations less than $100 so the contributions wouldn't have to reported. He warned that the media would try to make "controversial nonsense" out of potential connections between Nash and the group. Nash says he didn't solicit or encourage Burnell's help. "When you are a public figure, you sometimes attract people on the extreme fringes of things," he says. "Just because they show confidence in you doesn't mean you agree with everything they stand for, support their agenda or even know what their agenda is." As for Pia, Nash doesn't recall any pre-employment letter touting his religious background, and he says he certainly wouldn't ask for such for a thing. He says he doesn't ask employees about their religion, and in most cases doesn't know what they practice. "It's just silly to think I'm trying to brainwash a lot of police officers into joining a cult," he says. "Some people just see conspiracy everywhere." I've known Terry Boatwright for a long time. He's one of the easiest going guys I've ever met in Law Enforcement. Definitely not any "Boss Hawg Bubba". I've never known or heard of him even talk about religion, much less try to proseletyze any one else over.
I'd work for him in a New York minute, if it were possible.
I've never met Nash, only seen him in passing.
With Dorchester Co. Government being the Peyton Place that it is, it wouldn't surprise me a bit to discover quite a bit of "exxageratin'" going on.

The Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments appear in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible and also in the Jewish scriptures. Jewish people call them the 'Ten Sayings'. Most synagogues have these clearly written, in Hebrew, on a wall plaque. Usually just the first part of each Saying is written and often the first five and second five Sayings are shown in two lists. This reminds Jews that Moses received the Ten Sayings on two stone tablets, on Mount Sinai.
Wall plaque of the Ten Commandments The Ten Commandments are the fundamental laws of the Jews which tell the Jewish people how they should live. Many countries base their laws on these rules too.
The Ten Commandments
You shall have no other Gods but me.
You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it.
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.
Respect your father and mother.
You must not kill.
You must not commit adultery.
You must not steal.
You must not give false evidence against your neighbour.
You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour

I've been meaning to alert y'all about Sheriff Nash's re-election campaign. He's embattled in a primary fight in Dorchester County. He is quite frankly the BEST friend of the US and South Carolina constitutions of all the sheriffs in the state - he's likely the best sheriff in the nation in this regard.
His friendship with CE over the past couple years makes it hard for us to publicly promote him because the media will be quick to write controversial nonsense should any connection with CE be thought to exist. So I'm asking you to do whatever you can in a personal capacity to help his campaign. Please spread the word about his campaign far and wide. Another thought is to give to his campaign financially if you're too far from Dorchester County to volunteer. Keep in mind that the media will likely latch onto out of state contributions in a negative way. To avoid this possibility, keep your total contribution to LESS than $100 per person and it will not have to be reported. For those of you in South Carolina, there is no such concern of course. Should you be out of state and desire to give more, consider having friends or family members write a check to the Nash campaign.
Checks can be made to Nash for Sheriff and mailed to PO Box 52384, Summerville, SC 29485.
Lastly, the email below is his campaign newsletter. You can sign up to receive it and stay abreast of the campaign at his campaign website: http://www.nashforsheriff.com/.
Yours in the Cause,
Cory

Conquer the Spirit of Judging! Jan 31, '08 4:14 AM
by Ralph for everyone
Not long ago, I was meeting with a 19-year-old girl who had recently returned to the Lord after a time of tragic rebellion. I asked her about the counselors who tried to help her before she decided to go her own way.
When I mentioned the name of one of her counselors, she exclaimed, “I had a hard time with her, because whenever she looked at me I sensed a judgmental spirit.” I asked her how she could tell simply from a look whether or not someone was judging her. She said, “The way she looked at me made me feel that she was evaluating my dress and appearance and wanting me to conform to her standards.”
This testimony illustrates a common pitfall of those who try to help others by using personal authority rather than positional authority. A counselor must be careful to communicate God’s principles, rather than his own personal standards, if he is to be effective. Understanding the difference between positional authority and personal authority is at the heart of determining whether someone is judging or discerning how to help another person.
Personal authority commands, “You must follow my rules.” Positional authority appeals, “You must follow God’s rules.”
Sheriff Ray Nash has given Police Dynamics Seminars throughout the world. He explains how “personal authority” is often at the root of police brutality. When a police officer feels that a person is violating “his” rules, he loses sight of the fact that his authority is limited to enforcing the laws of those whom he represents.
This distinction between personal authority and positional authority is also at the heart of the warnings we read in James. One who judges has usurped God’s authority and is using it in a personal way. “Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?” (See James 4:11–12.)
When we are more concerned with the outward reformation of a person, rather than his heart condition before God, we are not showing genuine love.
When we see people whose dress or appearance is immodest, what is our immediate concern? Do we want to help them conform to a more appropriate style of dress or do we use those outward indicators as motivations to pray for their inward walks with the Lord, and their relationships with parents and others whom God has placed in their lives?
Looking past the appearance to the heart takes training, because “man looketh on the outward appearance” (I Samuel 16:7). To conquer a judgmental spirit, we must learn to see as God sees and look on the heart. Let’s ask God to help us see the true needs of people and purpose to show them His genuine love.
Through Christ our Lord,
Bill Gothard

Review of John Schoenheit's Paper on Adultery
reviewed by Dr. John Juedes
A research paper written by a Way staff member called "Adultery and Fornication: A Biblical Perspective" led to huge upheaval in The Way International (TWI). The author was John Schoenheit, a 6th Corps graduate, who at the time was employed by TWI as a member of the Research Department.
John Lynn, who was on TWI staff at the time, described TWI's reaction to the paper:
"At the November, 1986 USA Clergy meeting, Chris Geer (European Trunk leader), without even telling the subject of the paper, branded it as a 'slipshod piece of biblical research,' and as 'handling the Word deceitfully.' He said the paper left the door open to undermine all of Dr. Wierwille's woks.
"He also said that anyone who supported this or even had knowledge of it without reporting it to the Trustees should be relieved of his ministry responsibility and never allowed to hold any position above a Twig again.
"By then John Schoenheit had already been fired, and shortly thereafter Bo Reahard, Bob Mirabito, Dennis Hickman and Franklin Smith were also fired for their alleged 'involvement' with the paper." (Open letter by John Lynn, July, 1987; Lynn described the situation in more detail in taped speeches and transcripts of conversations Wayers had with L. C. Martindale)
Why would TWI leadership react so strongly against the paper? Why would it undermine V. P. Wierwille's work?
Leadership apparently found the content threatening because it indirectly accused them of moral and spiritual sin and error in the area of adultery and personal sexual behavior.
Since leadership so vehemently opposed the paper, most people have not heard of it, have not seen it, or have been afraid to read it. What does the paper contain that leadership considered so damaging?
Ray ,Did You Know Franklin Smith and Bo Reahard were part of the Way International Cult and were high level members?Did you do a Background check?

Nash drops lawsuit over marshal's money
Published on 06/05/01
BY BOBBIE YOUNG Of The Post and Courier Staff
SUMMERVILLE-Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash has dropped his lawsuit against the county in which he tried to regain control of money from the U.S. Marshal's Service.
Nash and the county began battling in spring 2000 over how the sheriff spent the money - including sending about 10 percent a month to a church.
Nash made his announcement in a memo to County Administrator Colin Martin. He said, "During this time of financial crisis for the county, we do not want to contribute additional financial pressure in light of attorney fees or the return to the sheriff's office of the remaining $250,000 generated by the marshal's program."
The county is facing a tax increase for the first time in several years. It recently had to borrow $1.7 million from its reserve fund to solve a cash flow problem.
For several years, the Marshal's Service has paid the county about $600,000 annually to house federal prisoners in the county jail. Nash had sole discretion over how the money was spent until last summer when County Council voted to take it away from him.
Nash spent much of the money on training and equipment for his department. But he also spent thousands of dollars for parties, luncheons, dinners and flight training for several deputies. The county owns no aircraft.
The expenditure that gathered the most attention was the more than $40,000 he paid Crossroads Community Church for the chaplain program.
For many months before council took control, the monthly check to the church was 10 percent of the amount received from the Marshal's Service. Councilman Randy Scott likened the payment to a "tithe."
Nash sued County Treasurer Patsy Knight in October, claiming County Council had usurped his authority illegally. Knight handles disbursement of county funds.
Nash's memo continued: "The marshal's contract has been a divisive issue. We hope that this action will bring unity instead of further division between the County Council and the sheriff. We want to pull together with the county leadership to help solve our mutual challenges."
Asked for comment, Nash said his memo covered all he wanted to say.
Among his requests were about $130,000 to replace money from the marshal's fund; 15 new deputies (and cars) at a cost of about $750,000; and a reorganization plan to provide more upper echelon officers at $250,000..
Last fall, Nash said if he couldn't control the marshal's fund, he no longer would accept federal prisoners. However, his memo states that he has housed a limited number all along and will continue to do so.
Martin said Monday that he found out the jail still was receiving federal prisoners when he noticed the fund's income was rising, but the memo was his first official notice of it.
He said he was waiting for Nash to provide an estimate of revenue from that source for the coming year.

hey guys, he's retiring... why are you still trying to slam him when he's not even running for sheriff anymore??
it's over... get over it already
it's like you are gasping for you last breath Chris, chill brother
I could care less about his beliefs, I care about the results he gets doing the job he was hired to do and to most it looks like he's done an excellent job
do you ask your barber what religion he is? does that make a difference of how he cuts your hair? your lawn maintenence people? your doctor? get the idea??
I don't know him either but man you guys are acting like a bunch of spoiled children that someone took their candy away
I live in DC and from the RESULTS in my neighborhood I'd say him and his people have all done an EXCELLENT job... Kudo's Nash and all of your people !!
we who live here have enjoyed the freedom of not worrying about home invasions every week, or driveby's or or or....
our children can play in the neighborhood without worrying about them getting caught in the cross fire of some dope deal gone bad, my wife can walk/run at night or in the early mornings before the sun comes up without fear...
for the most part people meet and greet others politely with a smile here
it isn't the hustle and bustle you see in the areas around us, it's a nice place to call home IMHO
and that my friends has a LOT to do with the security of the area, so thanks Sheriff Nash and your people and good luck with your retirement...

No I don't ask my barber or anyone else what religion they are ... NOR do i continue to support them with my hard earned money if they ask ME before they perform services or decide to work for me . And that the big difference... In a democracy the ENDS don't justify the MEANS... Our entire history our country has claimed to take the high road by having the best means and trusting the the ends are ensured to be appropriate.
Not a DC county resident, but i drive through there regularly and have a lot of ties. There has to be a more appropriate way to get the same results of less crime than by living in a "controlling" society.

I cannot believe the biased article. Why do you talk to two employees who were dismissed. What are the reasons they were dismissed. Please report this. What position did Officer Pia have in the NYPD. What were the reasons he left that department and came south? Why not ask Solicitor David Pascoe for comments. He is from another county and a Democrat. He should be able to give an unbiased report. Chief of Staff Barnes and Adminstraor Smith hold administrative positions and it is not necessary that they be certified Police officers. Why do you continually go to Councilman Chris Knight, an avowed opponent of Sheriff Nash and a strong supporter of Sheriff hopeful Knight.

__________
what are you trying to say, that DC residents are more law abiding that other areas naturally?? please, that's an insult to everyone else in the tricounty area...
what did nash have to do with it? are you kidding me? you don't think who is in charge of law inforcement in an area effects how lawful an area is???
you guys just want to argue just to argue evidently
Ray if you are reading this, I don't know you from Adam but thanks for keeping us residents safe the years you've been Sheriff... always remember it's only the squeeky wheel that tries to get the oil, and there is a reason why "wheel" is singular in that old statement...
all throughout this great country of ours it's usually some disgruntled minority of some kind that makes the most consistent noise among us... sooner or later we all tire of giving in to these types, giving in to these types is what has been the ruin of many good things this country has had to offer over the years
I don't know anything about Knight or Boatwright other than the ton of rumors that come about the Knight camp that Jr will have a hard time putting to rest
I will have to do some serious research on both before I vote, maybe even talk to both face to face if possible
meanwhile it does no good to bash Nash Chris, he's leaving... you've got your wish granted so be happy and put it to rest, I'm tired of reading the same worthless rant everytime Nash's name comes up from the same three people over and over and over and over
you are making yourself unbelieveable with these rants
and all you had to say to me was "EXCUSES" ??? why do I need to give excuses?? I'm not running for sheriff and neither is Nash... you make no sense there brother...
now I'm waiting on something worthwhile, like why Knight or Boatwright would be worthy of the job and some references to back it all up

whats wrong with being a Christian and living what you believe. You all should be ashamed of yourselves for bashing a God fearing man!
If someone chooses to have the 10 commandments displayed in their office then that is their choice, get over it.
As far as people living together without being married, I am proud that Nash would not hire them, we need more men like that in this corrupt world we live in.

ChrisPia - now that Nash is out and Boatwright is in, I have a question for you. Only those with computers have the great information you have provided us with but we now need to get the signs out for L C Knight. We have a window sticker thanks to one of Nash's deputies. What I need to know is how does one go about getting one of Knights' signs? I'm not just talking about one, I need plenty of them. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
Read about you in the PC. To bad they didn't tell the whole story about Nash. Again Thank You.

Ray Nash is one of the most virtuous men I have met. It has been a pleasure to work with him thru Crime Watch and other community involvement programs (which I am sure few of the net chair commandos can even spell). It is no wonder that South Carolina is First in the Worst (drunk driving, drug usage etc) when people are offended and threatened by someone with good Christian values is trying to make a difference (and if you look at the statistics of crime rates and crime solving since Ray has been in office) and he has.
Our great Nation was founded on the freedom to PRACTICE religion (not bash it) and if you are offended by this then I am sure that Bin Laden would welcome you with open arms.
I don’t blame Ray for retiring, I am sure that he is tired of defending himself for doing nothing wrong.
God Bless you Ray Nash and all those that service to protect and defend and allowing those that haven’t served to have the right to voice their ignorance.
For those who have Defended it, Freedom has a Flavor the Protected will never know.

Buttercup - common sense would tell a person to proofread before hitting the send button. If you can still remember your elementary schooling, "an" is only used BEFORE a word starting with a vowel (a e i o u). You also must be a graduate of the Ray Nash schooling. Or did you drop out in the 3rd grade?
Common sense must have also passed you over so to save time and effort, forget coming back at me because it would be a waste.

Chris Pia I have two questions for you. First of all, please share with the readers why you were terminated by Sheriff Nash. An let me warn you that I know the answer and if you don't answer the question or lie about it I will barbecue your behind.
The second question is what position were you promised by L. C Knight for this attack on Nash. Again. be truthful or I'll nail your tail to the tree because I know this answer also.
Nash was hired to protect the residents of Dorchester County and has done a good job of doing just that. You on the other hand are virtually unable to keep a job without resorting to underhanded crap like you're doing. I'm looking foertward to your comeuppance.
It is widely known throughout the state that L. C Knight's father ran a shady operation in Dorchester County and relied on the good old boys on the county council for his support. When the residents of Dorchester County saw what was going on and elected Nash to sweep the garbage out, the little clique crumbled. Now the Knight cronies on the council are trying their best to get L. C. Knight back in so their little power base can be restored. The people of Dorchester County deserve better.
Folks have got to ask them selves why a 72 year old overweight man with lots of money would be seeking the office of sheriff? He touts his service with SLED when reality is that he was a low level scheduler with no clout.
I'll be waiting for your answers Chris and I've got plenty more to say.

ran out of arms so you go completely off topic and start insulting someone for typo's, who cares...
you know what he/she meant as did the rest of us, typo's happen when you multitask on the net
that pedestal you're on has a broken leg so be careful
I'll wait for this to all shake out before I pass any judgement on Nash...
so far proof is on his side and the crime rate has been low so I'd vote for him again in a heartbeat, too bad he isn't running again
now I have my work cut out for me figuring out who is who with the other two

ldd1 I for one would like to hear more truth about who LC is, I don't have a clue other than the rumors about his father
hopefully Chris will answer...
if Chris fought Nash like this while under him I can understand why Nash fired him, why would anyone keep someone on that was trying to bring them down... you can't get anything done with people like that
you're either for us or against us
and personally I could care less if a Sheriff, any sheriff doing a good job, bought himself a brand new BMW at my taxpaying cost if he was doing a really good job for the community... much less a few trips here and there, take a couple of trips on us Nash... have at it, you've earned them
bogus companies give CEO's millions, why shouldn't a Sheriff that actually puts himself and his deputies lives on the line for us get bonuses if he's doing a fantastic job as well
and that would go for any Sheriff no matter who he/she is if they are doing a great job
you want to surround yourself with people you think you can trust, it doesn't always work out but you give it your best shot... so that means many of his workers will be people in his inner circle, that's a no brainer - not a conspiracy
again Ray thanks for all you've done, fret not because we've got plenty of WD40 for the squeeky wheel

Chris Pia while you're trying to figure out how to respond to my earlier post, please find out who hired the jailer who was stealing the money that was uncovered in the audit. Yes it happened under Nash's watch but wasn't the jailer originally hired by L. C Knight's father. Great on the job training program Knight had in place wasn't it? I think I prefer the ethics and morality training Nash put in place. Shouldn't our law enforcement officers exemplify the utmost in good behavior?

L.C. is well off from land sales and doesn't really need a job but if he were Sheriff, certain members of the county council would find themselves in a favorable position (more later on this).

I am a native of the lowcountry with relatives that came in to DorchCo hundreds of yrs ago at the Dorch State park site and spread out so I'm sure many in my family remember real well what all went on
I'll have to ask around, and then determine if that has anything to do with his son or if his son is his own man that would be above all that
even though I don't know him I've actually met Boatwright before, he seems like a straight up guy but I'll have to ask ppl I know in ChasCo about him as well... he was at ChasCo for many years right?

Boatwright hosted the Romanians too.
I guess it could be a coincidence, I'm leery though. Especially after he took no action on citizens complaints of police abuse this past summer.
He brought deputies in and they ran roughshod over those who live on the beach. They harassed those who they didn't approve of.
Now Nash endorses Boatwright, I don't think a "character" endorsement from Nash should carry a whole lot of weight, as a matter of fact it is the opposite and should serve as a red flag.<
I am sure that the Romanians were hosted by several LE Agencies when they visited. It is not uncommon for visiting LEOs from other countries to do so without receiving religious indoctrination.
"Police Harrassment?" PLEASE. On Folly, it was simply proactive law enforcement, something the old hippies there have never seen before and started whining about. North Charleston could be using some proactive enforcement, but then everyone would claim that locking up people carrying guns with no permit in certain neighborhoods was "Police racism".
I reiterate that to tar Boatwright because he's been a friend of Nash's is unfair, like holding you responsible for what your friend did is just as unfair.
If you use this to base a vote to return to the days of Carl Knight, Dorchester Co. deserves everything they are going to get.

Your coworker also tells me you did disrespect your superiors when confronted about the MRSA by using your New York "I'm a unionized cop and you can't screw with me" attitude and then tore up a document and threw it in your superiors face which resulted in your dismissal. OSHA was called and it took a little time for them to get there .So things were being fixed.(locks,Lighting, fire systems etc>>)the Money Came out of The County's General Fund.Approx $30,000.
THIS IS A FACT ____THERE WERE 8 CASES of MRSA IN THE JAIL IN THE LAST YEAR.____
From What I was Told By OSHA And I Have a COPY of THE Report was the 1st complaint about safety conditions is controlled and enforced by the county....Me BEING fired for Revealing that there was MRSA in the Facility Could not be Proven Beyond a Preponderence of the Evidence because of My Past Harassment By The DCSO and By My refusing to give up my Source 3 times It was a pattern of Insubordination. NOBODY Ever asked Me If My Source was an Inmate....I couldn't by law give up this source under the Hippa Act...My Source was Not an inmate though.....

Jammer.....I was not just blowing smoke. I knew a lot about Chris's background and why he was let go at DCSD. He had a lot to say about Nash and yet there was more to the story and I wanted him to fess up. As I put it earlier, I just wanted to "peel the onion".
Even Chris replied that what I was saying was basically true but apparently my third hand knowledge of the events was not totally accurate and he indicated his coworker's information was not totally correct. At any rate, Chris laid out the details basically as I knew them at which point I thanked him for his honesty and wished him well.
If I knew you and liked you as I do Nash and someone was hammering you when I knew they had a hidden agenda I would do the same for you but it wouldn't be blowing smoke. It would be more like dangling a worm to see if you could get a bite.
Good luck getting information to make an informed decision come primary time.

Well I have enjoyed your posts about Nash and exposing his practices seems like he is getting what is coming to him. Those of you who vote in DC should focus around who is running for Sheriff. One to watch is Boatwright he is a conniving power hungry hypocrite and from what I have seen and witnessed he follows Nash’s teachings to the letter and connected arm and arm. After reading what you have written and researching for myself Nash and Boatwright are as one. The Folly Beach Public Safety Department is in turmoil due to Boatwright. The connection between the department and public that was there has vanished since he walked in the door and several longtime employees left the department on their own accord because Boatwright is the “Authority figure” his words. Why do you think the people of Folly Beach are not responding to these posts? They want him gone! He has done nothing for Folly Beach and cares nothing about the city or the people. Look at how long he has been with Folly Beach before announcing running for Sheriff in DC a second time (under a year). Why did he leave the CCSO where he was a Major? He wanted the title of Police Chief to add to his resume. When Boatwright started at Charleston County Sheriff’s Office he did not start in patrol as everyone does in Law Enforcement he was brought in by Cannon at the rank of Lieutenant and worked on accreditation for the agency. Boatwright was then given rank of Captain, which there were so many complaints from Deputies about Boatwright he had to be moved out of the daily operations. Cannon then created a position of Major over the courts which Boatwright fell into or was handed. Since Boatwright left the Sheriffs office the position of Major at the courthouse has not been filled! Moving on, Air Force Special Investigations Officer, mainly a title and paper pusher position which is completely different from a civilian police investigation position that has a whole different set of rules and regulations. Think about it how much serious crime do you read or hear about on military bases. This is where Boatwright spent the majority of his so-called 30 years of Law Enforcement. North Charleston Police Patrol Supervisor not too sure about that one I really question that as he started out there and was there less than 6 years. Take this information as you will but just be warned. I don’t vote in DC and don’t endorse either candidate just thought I would pass on the information that I have about one of your candidates so you are informed. So if you want him he is all yours!

Chris and Truth 08--You must go to the same fictional school. You ought to learn your facts before writing pure unadulterated BS. Chris--I know a little about the NYC Pension system--how can you draw disability and work as a Detention Officer. Facts and truth only. Truth O8, you ought to research your facts about Boatwright's experience. Did he fabricate his FBI academy training also?

This will answer some of the Question asked in this blog…
L.C. Knight never had anything to do with the Sheriff’s Department when his father was Sheriff.
He finished college and joined SLED as a career officer. He was a Captain when he retired and through the years supervised many men. I do not have a lot of personal knowledge about Mr. Knight except for my dealings with him when there was an upcoming hurricane or a death penalty jury. The hotel I managed housed many of these juries and many officers from SLED, DNR and the Highway Patrol. Since this hotel was located near the intersection of Interstate 26 and Interstate 95, it was a good place for officers to stay if they needed to be deployed rapidly to other areas when the hurricane came to shore.
Mr. Knight was always professional. He did his job quietly and efficiently, conducted himself in a gentlemanly fashion and never asked for special favors. He was the consummate professional.
Just about every article touts Nash’s great prosecution record. It is easy to clear the docket and inflate the prosecution rating when deals are cut left and right, charges are reduced and violent offenders are given light sentences and/or probation when they should, by all means, be taken off the streets. Jury trials are few and far between in Dorchester County.
I agree that assaulting Nash is like beating a dead horse, The questions have been asked and here is what I know. (Cont.)

The Way International and other right wing religious organizations often discriminate against women and children. There has been child abuse charges lodged against The Way International and the Bill Gothard Institute of Basic Life Principles. We are not talking about spanking here. We are talking about bodily harm.
Women must be subservient to men, wear no make-up or jewelry, except a simple wedding band, and wear long dresses with no pants allowed.
When people believe Nash is being attacked because of his religion, this just isn’t correct. I take issue with the mismanagement of funds more than anything else. I take issue with any cult affiliated organization being injected into our government.
However, I think religion is deeply personal and that is why cults like the Way International can fly under the “God colors”. When you have freedom of religion you must take the good with the bad.
People who use religion and God to further their own agenda are despicable. In my bible this heresy is termed blasphemy. They should be ashamed and ask for forgiveness before they burst hell wide open.
I am in the process of contacting officials to obtain the records from 2007 of all criminal court proceedings in Dorchester County under a Freedom of Information Act request. This will shed some light on these skewed and manipulated statistical data about prosecutions and convictions. Email me at elonbrook@bellsouth.net and I will forward them to you.
I am in possession of an OSHA report which proves that there were 8 cases of MRSA in Dorchester County jail in 2007. This is available to view or download at http://www.dragonslayerpress.com/breakin...
Whoever is elected sheriff, I hope they will fight the illegal drugs in this county. In St. George drugs are dealt on many corners and crack houses are doing a lovely business. Yes, I have asked Nash for his help, and his response was the he “must be invited in”. Isn’t he the chief law enforcement officer in the county? Why does he need to be invited?

Wow! I have just read all of the postings. There is too much to comment on. Much of Chris Pia's comments are straight from the desk, and vocabulary, of Chris Murphy (no surprise). Arrogance, stupidity and insubordination got him fired. LC Knight is making deals with some people who have no business in LE, many fired for cause, but are being promised great jobs in the Knight Sheriff's Office. DCSO does not operate in St. George unless they are asked officially. It is the law, Dragonslayer. Nash is a good man and I don't blame him a bit for walking away from the mess that just will not go away. Small minded people get what they deserve. I'll watch from a distance. I'd rather not get splattered.

I must apologise. Poor choice of words. I'm sure that Mr. Pia is not stupid. My vocabulary could not find an expression for his actions. How can a man who is on disability from the NYPD get a job in LE here? What prompted him to take a job that is political in nature when he disagreed with the politics of the boss? This is not the police department nor is it a union shop (nor, thankfully, a union state). Welcome to the South, Mr. Pia. You should have left your NY "stuff" above the Mason Dixon line. I-95 works both ways.
