Myers guides Cougars to comeback victory

The Post and Courier
Saturday, August 30, 2008

North Charleston was down, but never out.

The Cougars rallied from a 16-0 deficit with three second-half touchdown passes from Denzel Myers to beat Bishop England, 20-16, on Friday night at Jack Cantey Stadium.

"I'm glad I don't have hair," North Charleston coach Jimmy Brown said. "I would have pulled it all out by the third quarter. We made a lot of mental mistakes, but we never gave up."

Myers' 6-yard touchdown pass to Richard Holmes with 6:23 to play put the Cougars ahead 20-16.

On Bishop England's next possession, Myers came up with a drive-ending interception, his second of the game.

"Denzel is a great athlete," Brown said. "The first half was probably the worst football I've ever seen him play. I just told him to calm down, relax, trust your line and try to get the ball into the hands of your playmakers. That's what he did."

North Charleston is 2-0, while Bishop England fell to 1-1.

"We're usually the ones who put people away in the second half," Bishop England coach John Cantey said. "We kind of reversed that this time. We're a very conditioned team, but North Charleston got the best of us tonight."

The Bishops led 10-0 at the half and looked seemingly in command after driving 70 yards for a touchdown on their first possession of the third quarter to move ahead 16-0.

Bishop England's TD came on a 20-yard pass from Mikell Fosberry to Cody Cramer, but the key play was a successful fake punt that kept the scoring drive alive.

Facing fourth-and-10 from the North Charleston 42, Luke Navarro passed to Johnny Burke for a first down at the 15-yard line.

But North Charleston roared back on a pair of TD passes from Myers. The first covered 47 yards to Kayron Smith, and the second was a 63-yard completion to Holmes to cut the lead to 16-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Bishop England led 10-0 at the half thanks to a couple of big plays on offense and tough defense throughout by the Bishops.

A screen pass from Fosberry to Amrhein went for a 48-yard scoring play to put the Bishops ahead 6-0 with six minutes to play in the half.

One possession later, the Bishops drove for a 35-yard field goal by Thomas Warren with 16 seconds to play in the half to put Bishop England ahead 10-0.

Neither team could gain much of an advantage in a turnover-filled first quarter.

On Bishop England's first possession, Myers picked off a Fosberry pass to set up the Cougars on the Bishop England 43-yard line.
