Linder
A man in his mid-20s has alleged that Earl Darrell Linder, 57, sexually assaulted him twice more than a decade ago. Last weekend, the man told his family about the alleged sexual assault and then contacted the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, Detective Diane Turner, said. "He just couldn't live with it any more," Turner said. Police did not identify the man because he was a juvenile at the time of the alleged assault. Police charged Linder with second-degree attempted criminal sexual conduct with a minor; second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor; and a lewd act on a minor, Turner said. He does not have a prior criminal record. If convicted, he could face more than 25 years in prison, Turner said. Linder is division chief of facility and grounds for the Mount Pleasant Public Services Department. He was not a town employee at the time of the alleged incident, officials said. Town officials could not be contacted late Friday about Linder's employment status. Linder did not respond to a phone message left at his home. His attorney, T.O. Sanders, said he was "just in the stage of trying to find out the facts." The parents of the alleged victim confronted Linder last weekend, and the sheriff's office arrested him at his home Tuesday, Sanders said. Linder and his wife were friends with the parents of the alleged victim, Sanders said. Linder was released on $210,000 bond, according to court records. Turner said the man who made the allegations against Linder said that the first sexual assault happened when he was 13 years old in November 1995. The second sexual assault is alleged to have happened in December 1996, Turner said. The man told police the alleged assaults happened at Linder's property. Turner said it is not uncommon for people who allege that sexual abuse happened when they were youngsters to wait many years before coming forward because they are ashamed, afraid or embarrassed. There is no statute of limitations on these sorts of crimes, she said. Reach Prentiss Findlay at 937-5711 or pfindlay@postandcourier.com.

ted turner criticized the CNN new owners for sensationalising "the pervert of the day"....looks like the P&C has unfortunately caught on to this miserable trend...

The P&C should go after the corrupt politicians and beauracrats with equal fevor. They are financially raping the taxpayers everday.
And maybe it is a little unfair to put someones picture in the paper until they are found guilty.

It used to be policy for suspects in sexual assault cases not to be identified by the media at least until they were indicted, because of the stigma associated with such charges. I wonder how the staff meetings would go if Larry Tarleton were so named and pictured.
Sexual predators get no pity from me, but "innocent until proven guilty" trumps sensationalism every time.

Maybe a picture is unnecessary, but a complete, full "police blotter" publication of all arrests in the paper is the only way to stop PTI for individuals/crimes that should not be considered for it.
In the district where I live, the Boss Hogg of a lawyer state Senator has made a specialty of members of his law firm representing pedophiles and getting PTI for them. This means they can molest and molest and there is no record. Of course it helps that the Senator's daughter-in-law is an assistant solicitor and she approves the PTI. Her job also means many criminal cases get delayed and delayed because of the conflicts between her office and her father, sister, brother-in-laws, husbands firm. That firm is almost half the lawyers in the county.

If they would not have shown his picture somebody would've already been screaming to know what he looks like. Can't please everybody.

It is a double edge sword but since these accusations are over ten years old....I just don't know

i think that the name of the accused should be confidential just like the victims, until proven guilty or at least until brought to trial.
There are a lot of troubled people out there who make accusations just to get attention or to use as an excuse for some problem that they have.

Guilty or innocent, his life is ruined now. If he is guilty he should rot in hell, but if he is innocent well yepper he will have a very bad life of course this doesn't effect the reporter here so oh well the paper got their story.

It occurred to me, don't know if I'm right, but a lot of times other possible victims come forward when they see a picture of their attacker. I don't know if that was the case but it's what I thought of.
That said, I agree with a previous poster that it is concerning that a picture of the accused was posted because of the sigma attached (and then what if he is not guilty....he will never live it down). Guess it is a double-edged sword.

Did someone recently come out of the closet? Was this guy the easiest one to blame? How can an arrest be made with only one persons word of something that supposedly happened 10 years ago? If this man is found not guilty I sure hope he can recover from such an awful accusation and be rewarded with expenses he incurred.

I have known and been friends with this man for about 15 years. I am appalled that the paper, the media, thinks it's okay to splash someone's picture like this even tho it's supposed to be: "innocent till proven guilty!" He doesn't have a chance now. He will lose his job and God only knows what else. I knew him well during the time these incidents allegedly occurred. Not for a minute do I believe these accusations. Don't worry, Darryll, those that know better hopefully can help you. I would be more than willing to testify to his good character and state my opinion that this is total BS. I had a child that he was around during those years and nothing ever even close to that happened. Someone needs to look closely at the person making the accusations. Is he doing this because he's mad about something? I pray for Darryll and his family.

If this really happened why was it not timely reported ? I think his bond $210,000.00 is way to high. If he has a family and a home in the area he is not going anywhere.

Maybe it's just me but a kid 13 years old is a pretty big kid.Big enough to fight back or smart enough to tell someone. When I was 13 there was nothing I would not tell my Mom and Dad.For one thing I knew my Dad would kick someone's a** for hurting one of his kids, and that's a message he gave us loud and clear. My oppinion is something is not right about this story. Why now? On the other side why won't Linder speak up and deny charges? If I were him I would damn well answer any call to defend myself. The boy's parents confronted him last week.Would they have proceeded in filing charges if there were not some proof in the boy's story? I just don't get it.It is a scary thing when someone can be arrested and their pitcure smeared all over the place before an investigation is completed.I somehow don't think they could do that if there was not some truth in the story. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

I think a lot of you would be singing a different tune, if the accuser was a 13 year old GIRL at the time. How many men have come forward, many years after the fact, in all the Catholic priest molestation cases? If this did happen, do you really think a 13 year old boy is capable of seducing a 45 year old straight man? Really? As for his being identified, why is he any different than the guy who is accused of raping college students? Or, anyone ACCUSED of anything. Aren't their reputations shot too?

robkbob,
So are you saying the kid is now gay at 26, and needs a scapegoat to explain this to his parents; and picks an old friend of theirs (who he has some grudge against), saying this man molested him, and that's why he is the way he is? Then he's going to subject himself to an investigation and trial, just to justify his lifestyle to his parents? I don't buy it.

I have to disagree..I was put in a situation that was 'inappropriate', I wont get into any details but this was a man that was supposed to be a family friend..My Dad beat me and my Mom alot so I know he wouldve killed this man..I didnt tell anyone until like 4 years later when Oprah had a show on about secrets that your afraid to tell..well I told my Mom that day..
This was a older man in West Ashley that had 2 horses and would get teenage girls to go riding with him..then he'd ride on a horse with them and touch them inappropriately..I was so scared and shocked I was scared to say anything..and he told me I better not. I have always been a rebel and dont take any crap from anybody but something like this is very scary and I hid it..I also talked to other girls I knew that went riding with him and he had done this to many other girls..he's still alive I heard but dont know if he has horses.
I don't know about this man thats being accused but I do know that someone can do things and noone know a thing is going on..and it can take years before you have the courage to speak up.

Greeneyes -why was something not done when you finally came forward, especially when there were other girls involved? Sorry but I'm not buying your story. If you told your parents and they did nothing I think I would find myself some new parents. How old were you at the time? Was he prosecuted? You had proof he had done this to other girls but did any of them come forward?Uhmmmmm, your name isn't
Melenie is it?
It's not too late if you wan't to do something about it ya know.I have an idea, just print this article and send it to him-might just send him a message!!!!!!

SteveWynn,
That's exactly what I'm saying. I hope someone gets what is coming to them. This kid and parents better have some "blue dress" DNA before this goes to trial. There is no way to prove something that old without physical proof.
This man has no past record of any kind. Now he's faced with having his picture in the P&C which makes him look guilty even before any evidence is shown.
You are right about other people being accused and ruining their life. Imagine if this happened to you.
I'm a little mad at the P&C for putting up this mans pic when there are plenty of guilty people who are not shown. As in the case of the hit and run on Folly Beach. This guy left this person for dead and got caught over a week later. The victim is still in the hospital and almost died. Now there is a photo of a guilty person worthy of showing.

Southern_gurl ~ Don't you worry, I know your uncle and knew him back then. This is a truckload of crap. I know your mom and dad and know that your dad was very sick recently. This BS is the last thing ya'll need. It is a terrible shame that the media gets away with ruining someone's life by posting information before one even gets a chance to defend oneself. You and your family need to stick together and be supportive of your little cousin. Your uncle and his wife and child are gonna need all your love and caring spirits. My thoughts and prayers are constantly with you and your family. Take care,
An old friend from way back...

robkbob: ridiculous scenario. i agree with southerngirl45. When the victim's parents (who are supposedly friends) confronted him, he would've spoken up then and denied it. The police are not going to arrest a man just because the guy said that this happened. Linder either admitted it to the guy's parents, or,he wouldn't deny it to them. More power to the victim for speaking up.

Tayloriam~ he did deny it...because the parents and the victim pressed charges the cops had to arrest him

My friend's life and the lives of his loved ones are on the cusp of disaster because of a slanderous forum known as the post and courier.
He is innocent until proven guilty. NOT guilty until proven innocent.
This dark time will pass. No matter how this ends, Mr. Linder and his family will be loved, comforted, supported and well taken care of despite p&c's poor judgement and lack of ethics in it's jouralistic practices. The coverage of this story DOES NOT represent the true freedom our forefathers envisioned. This medium is the true disease of our culture.
Darrell, we will be supporting you in that court room. I would proudly stand for you as testimony to your character.
Hold your head up.
Know that we love you and pray for you.
We pray for everyone devastated by this.

Who do yall think you are? THIS MAN IS GUILTY!! He admitted to these charges! Why do think he was arrested and his bond was so high. This man is a pedophile. What about the victim and his famiy? Living with this nightmare for 13 years and not being able to tell anyone must be horrifying. Could you imagine? If you know this man so well, why don't YOU look him in the eyes and ask him what he DID and see what response you will get. It is quite obvious you have not done this!!!! You think that Darrell's life was ruined, what about the VICTIM? I hope that this man gets everything coming to him. I know that justice will be served and we will wait to see these "long time FRIENDS" of Darrell's really know know who he is!!!!!!! I appreciate the P&C for posting this article. It can only help more of his victims come forward!!! THANK YOU P&C!!!!!!!

wow is all have to say. well not really, darrell is my uncle and im a 30 yr old atractive gay male that use to spend every weekend and summer with him and his son at the gardens and not once did darrell try anything with me, or even make a lude jesture towards me. i always knew that charleston was backwards but i did not think that it was so twisted to ruin someones life before they were found guilty. do you think that this man will recieve a fair trial? no is the answer. am i makeing excuses for him? no if he did it and is proven guilty for it he should pay for it. but i do feel for his wife and kids because if he is innocent he really wont get a fair trial because there is no way you are going to find a jury that isnt jaded by all the publicity and publications of his picture that should have been protected just like the victims. to the person that made the allagations i hope for your sake that you are telling the truth because you have just ruined darrells life. i hope you can sleep with that for the rest of your life and if he did do it im sorry but what took so long jesus be a man and stand up for yourself when things happen....

Obviously this man was not thinking about HIS family when he laid hands on this innocent victim. He was only thinking of HIMSELF! He was a MAN who knew right from wrong! Darell has openly admitted to these 3 seperate charges, not to just 1 victim but 2! I hope and pray that more victims, like this victim, have the courage to stand up to this monster! You all claim Darrells life is ruined, what about the VICTIMS LIFE....
