Obama's night
Senator accepts Democrats' nomination, vows to cut taxes, end war

DENVER — Surrounded by an enormous, adoring crowd, Barack Obama promised a clean break from the "broken politics in Washington and the failed policies of George W. Bush" Thursday night as he embarked on the final lap of his bid to become the nation's first black president.

Presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., gestures Thursday while making his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
"America, now is not the time for small plans," the 47-year-old Illinois senator told an estimated 84,000 people packed into Invesco Field, a football stadium at the base of the Rocky Mountains. He vowed to cut taxes for nearly all working-class families, end the war in Iraq and break America's dependence on Mideast oil within a decade. By contrast, he said, "John McCain has voted with President Bush 90 percent of the time" on health care, education, the economy and more, he said of his Republican rival. Polls indicate a close race between Obama and McCain, the Arizona senator who stands between him and a place in history. On a night 45 years after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I have a Dream Speech," Obama made no overt mention of his own race. "I realize that I am not the likeliest candidate for this office. I don't fit the typical pedigree" of a presidential candidate was as close as he came to the long-smoldering issue that may well determine the outcome of the election.
Obama's acceptance speech
Text of prepared remarks by Sen. Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention
Campaigning as an advocate of a new kind of politics, he suggested that at least some common ground was possible on abortion, gun control, immigration and gay marriage. Obama delivered his 44-minute nominating acceptance speech in an unrivaled convention setting, before a crowd of unrivaled size — the filled stadium, the camera flashes in the night, the made-for-television backdrop that suggested the White House, and the thousands of convention delegates seated around the podium in an enormous semicircle. Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, leave their convention city today for Pennsylvania, first stop on an eight-week sprint to Election Day. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia spoke first of the anniversary of King's memorable speech. "Tonight we are gathered here in this magnificent stadium in Denver because we still have a dream," said the Georgia lawmaker, who marched with King, supported Obama's primary rival, Hillary Clinton, then switched under pressure from younger black leaders in his home state and elsewhere. Obama's aides were interested in a different historical parallel from King: Obama was the first to deliver an outdoor convention acceptance speech since John Kennedy did so at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1960. In his speech, Obama pledged to jettison Bush's economic policy and replace it with his own designed to help hard-pressed families. "I will cut taxes for 95 percent of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle class," he said. The speech didn't mention it, but Obama has called for raising taxes on upper-income Americans to help pay for expanded health care. He did not say precisely what he meant by breaking the country's dependence on Mideast oil, only that Washington has been talking about doing it for 30 years "and John McCain has been there for 26 of them." His pledge to end the war in Iraq responsibly was straight from his daily campaign speeches. "I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons," he added. As he does so often while campaigning, Obama also paid tribute to McCain's heroism, the 72-year-old Arizona senator was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, then assailed him. "Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than 90 percent of the time?" McCain was in Ohio as Obama spoke, and after a series of sharply negative convention-week television commercials, his campaign aired a one-night advertisement that complimented Obama and noted that the speech occurred on the anniversary of King's famous address. "Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America. Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, 'Congratulations,' " McCain says in the ad. "How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight senator, job well done."

Last night's speech was the best speech ever given by a Presidential candidate or President, possibly the best speech in recorded history. Martin Luther King must be proud of him for taking us, Americans, to the next level. He did feed the multitude though, Mr. Barack Obama's food was not tangible but food for the soul.

Citizen "charlestonpride" you must have not heard or you may have miss-understood that section of The Great Speech. The finance method was given however, it is true this was not a speech of ordinary daily vernacular thus it may have been over your head. Just trust. It is possible if truly made about us and not about partisanship, race or any other immaterial issue.
Just trust again.

Most Americans don't want the federal government "running" their lives. I want them to stay out of my life and my back pocket. I want to work for everything that I have or want to have. I don't want to fund programs that people abuse because they are too lazy to work. My spouse and I work 4 jobs to make ends meet or to purchase "things" that we want.
I was behind a very attractive, well dressed lady with 2 very nice looking teen age boys that looked like football players in the grocery store. I was floored when she pulled out the green EBT card to pay for her groceries. I was even more shocked when the 3 three of them went into the parking lot and got into a mercedes. This is the kind of stuff that I am tired of. This is the kind of governement spending that has go to stop. This is why I am not going to support someone who is only going to "give" more to people who won't do it for themselves.

.... This is the same man who voted twice, as a state rep to prevent requireing doctors to try to save and protect infants who survived a botched abortion.
"Not worth the expense," he said "the mother had all ready decided to kill the infant, he said."
So he would not support trying to save a living, breathing infant.

And the simple fact is that if you claim to be a Republican or a Democrat, I don't feel that you will ever be "bipartisan". How can you be for, or work with, both parties when you already hoop and holler for one side?

Everyone needs to read about the Federal Lawsuit that was filed last week in Pennsylvania (Suit filed 08/21/08, No. 08-cv-4083). Critics will say that the suit does not have legs, but the evidence was entered in to court and was not thrown out although a motion for a restraining order on Obama was denied (until he can be served).
I think the point of contention will be whether or not he was ever adopted by Lolo Soetoro and/or was ever a citizen of Indonesia and/or if he ever reclaimed his American citizenship properly upon his return to Hawaii.
My main criticism of the suit is that Wikipedia is cited as a source under the question of what hospital he was born. That doesn't fly in Federal court. Although there is a reprint of his birth certificate, there is no record of his mother ever being in either hospital.

It was a bad choice for McCain who has built his entire campaign on the fact that Obama isn't qualified to be president to choose this governor from Alaska.
The VP slot is more important for him than Obama, considering his age. He picked someone with very little political experience (I don't care if she's a governor...she's a governor of one of the least-populated states)and even more importantly, less national profile. You can't convince me in any way shape or form she'll be ready to lead the nation if something were to happen to McCain.
It's clear he was trying to add some pizazz to his ticket by choosing Palin, but he may have stayed where the national spotlight was before with a more renowned governor or known senator. Palin served as a head of the oil and gas commission and before that was mayor of a city with less than 10000 people. Not impressive.
While her whole story about her child with Down's Syndrome is inspiring, it's not unique. My friend is a genetic counselor and sees it every day. It's also great that she's a "hockey mom" with 5 kids. Good for her. That does NOT qualify her to be vice-president. Poor move in my opinion on McCain's part. I think in the end, he didn't want someone who would outshine him. And if he thinks this will win over Hilary supporters who are overwhelmingly pro-choice...think again.

outrage--McCain had to:
a) pick someone younger than him
b) pick someone more charismatic and appealing than him
c) pick someone who could compliment his ticket and bring in new supporters
All of this talk about DC and non-DC insiders is basically just talk. Republicans have been spouting since Obama began his campiagn that he lacks "experience" ....experience is relative to what the position is, but ability to lead isn't. And all of this talk about her executive experience is just silly. When it comes down to it, he needed someone with a strong national profile that can prove they have the ability to lead in his stead. I don't know much about her yet, I guess we need to just wait and see how can will answer when she is challenged with that question.
But I'm with Test, no offense to anyone's state, but governor of Alaska, and mayor of a tiny town prior to that as your sole political experience...I remain underwhelmed.

Test2007 oh yeah "buddy" now the scumbags on the left will dig for anything to bring her down...thats good, lets atack that poor woman, you know, hillary cried about being picked on for being a woman...I dont think Palin will.
---"Bring her down"? Umm, isn't that what people on both sides do in politics? You need to breathe and think before you post. I didn't attack her but you are obviously her husband, brother, or first cousin because you seem to think you know something about her character just from that 5 minutes she has been nominated.
---Like I said before. Do you know her personally? Because I don't. Save your applause until we really get to know her. I heard she tried to get her brother in law fired from his job. Oh, it is nice to spout the fact that she has a child with down syndrome but I'd rather see how regular families deal with the challenge. She has the financial support to deal with it while others aren't as fortunate, so I don't think it is as big a feat as some are making it out to be.
You liberals are disgusting in your hatred for the right.
---Um this coming from someone who started a sentencing with "You liberals" and referred to us as "you scumbags on the left". Maybe you should look in the mirror. Idiot.
Bottom line is the O'Biden ticket has been sandbagged and played.
----Any idiot (no offense) could see that choosing her was a strategic move on mccain's part. He's old as dirt and needs someone really young to balance him out.
Obama picks old white guy for change, McCain picks woman, mom of 5 and a gov!
---Obama himself is for change so I guess that balances that ticket out. From what I have read about her so far, I don't see the "change" she is bringing to washington.
hmmm O'Biden - hypocrite and traitor to the womans movement!
---What the hell do you know about the women's movement. Stop throwing words and phrases around that you know nothing about. The women's movement didn't enter your mind once since high school until this lady was picked and suddenly you're an expert. Get outta here with that tripe.

On Palin:
Now McCain and his running mate have a child fighting in the war. I think he chose her because no one can question ones motivations for sustaining a war if they are willing to send their own children. Smart move.
From Wikipedia:
"On September 11, 2007, the Palins' eighteen-year-old son Track, eldest of five, joined the Army.[55][citation needed] He now serves in an infantry brigade and will be deployed to Iraq in September 2008."

john and cypress - you both have been written off like jane. I think you're a troll/propaganda worker as well. You don't think. You spout the most inane comments that make NO sense. It's all root root for a team that could give a damn about you. Yes, I am a liberal. Damn proud of it, but I don't accept everything they say as gold but you two seem to take anything republicans and entertainers (o'reilly and limbaugh) say as the truth.
Idiots.
I am going to continue my discussion with people who actually know what they're talking about and have more to say then
Obama is not for change
bad bad liberals
liberals do this "" or that
you liberals
Anyone who is all one thing is an idiot. If you adjust your beliefs to one party then you're an idiot.
i am putting you two on ignore. Hopefully some people with real comments will start posting b/c you are making everyone look bad.

ALSO, I'M HOLDING BACK MY COMMENTS OF PASSIVE AGGRESSIONS FOR ALL THE OBAMA HATE'ERS. I'M GONNA PEE ON MYSELF TRYING TO HOLD THEM IN. I'LL GIVE SOME EXAMPLES OF WHAT MY COMMENTS WILL BE LIKE AFTER PRESIDENT OBAMA GETS ELECTED.
1.) I WONDER WHAT COLOR WILL HE PAINT THE "WHITE HOUSE?" lol
2.) WHO WILL BE IN CHARGE OF WATERMELON SEEDS PICK-UP?
3.) IN WHICH ROOM WILL HE MAKE HIS FIRST SON?
4.) WHICH ROOM WILL OPRAH SLEEP IN? lol
THATS ENOUGH FOR NOW!! THIS IS UNREAL. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Test, if you are looking for real comments, real discussion, especially about the issues wtihout the usual blowhard propaganda....I suggest you go elsewhere. You're a vet of this board as I am...and you know as well as I do that this is pretty much the usual frustration.
New names...same old BS!

Will the real Obama please stand up. In spite of the determined attempts of the Obama handlers to obfuscate the details concerning Obama's subversive background, more and more Americans are seeing thru the Obama charade; and, are making an objective appraisal based on their own intelligence of the historical facts which are irrefutable. Obama is neither Christian nor Muslim. Unless he has had one of his very frequent epiphanies in the last week or two, he is a disciple and practitioner of Black Liberation Theology whose tenants have been amply articulated by Jeremiah Wright and James Cone. For 20yrs. Obama, under the tutorial of the fanatical Reverend Wright, immersed himself and his family in Black Liberation Theology, a Marxist derivative which rejects Christianity; and, which professes that the White race is equivalent to the Devil. It's amazing that anyone would be shocked at Obama's perverted view of the Bible, concerning which Obama recently publicly mocked Jesus Christ's "Sermon On The Mount". Rev. Wright's mentor, Black Liberation theologian, James Cone, in his book "For My People" states: "The Christian faith does not possess in its nature the means for analyzing the structure of capitalism. Marxism, as a tool of social analysis, can disclose the gap between appearance and reality, and thereby help Christians to see how things really are." It is this logic, reinforced by his mother who was an avowed Marxist, which has schooled Obama to seek economic parity in America thru income redistribution; i.e. Marxist Socialism; and, is an overriding theme of his campaign. Obama's repeated references to "economic parity" and "social justice" are simply Marxist jargon for "Taking more from you and giving it to others for the common good". Further, noone should be surprised at Obama's proclamation that American is NOT a Christian Nation. This from a man who is a fanatical advocate of the abhorrent procedure of partial-birth-abortions. Although the Obama campaign has painstakingly attempted to lay a smokescreen to confuse the past religious associations of their candidate, hopefully a Christian America will send Obama an unmistakable message in November. It's what you get with an un-vetted candidate whose only skill is reciting a text from a teleprompter while even Jesse Jackson admits Obama arrogantly looks down his nose and "talks down to the audience." A characteristic which was front and center in Obama's comments about bitter folks in Small Town America who "Cling to their religion." Greg Neubeck

Future news flash----"Today President McCain issued a call to all draft age men and women to sign up to fight the scurge of Russians preparing to attack America because of the threats he issued toward their government last week. He is asking everyone regardless of social class or financial status, stating, even your vice president has a kid in the service so sign up, you wimps!"

Common conservative spin……or propaganda!
If you are for the working class, want a more fair tax distribution, then you are Marxist or communist.
If you question or are critical of the current government or the Republican Party in general, then you hate America.
If you are concerned about the environment, then you must be a wacko tree hugger.
does any of these sound familiar?

"Minority south, I did talk in generalizations but the fact is the black generalizations are more racist than the white generalizations! That's a fact not a generalization. If BO doesn't win the election it will be because of all those white racists not his lack of ability or inexperience!"
Citizen crankyyankee, I will not debate from a generalization of who generalizes more and conclude to another even more ambiguous generalization. You have long since stopped generalizing and arrive at fallacies.

There were these two close friends that shared a common birthday and they ate lunch together every year to celebrate. One asked the other...So, where do you want to eat at? The other replied...don't end a sentence with a preposition. She said Ok. So, where do you want to eat at BEETCH? Have a great weekend.

All this good news AND it's a 3 day weekend!!! What a great day!!!!
Ahhhh....McCain and Palin...that should just about do it. Thank God McCain did something right with his choice and trumped Obama/Biden at the same time.
Wouldn't you have loved to see Obama's reaction when he heard??? Probably said some 4 letter words and slammed down his tiny little fists....too bad.
MinoritySouth: I think "minority" was a good pick for your screen name. As this long list of posts shows you ARE in the minority.
Mr Pretty (what's that all about): "turn this country around" is exactly what we DON'T need.
Looks like we are seeing the president for the next 8 years and the first female president following that term :) Not that I care one way or the other if it's a man or a woman. Just a really good and smart choice.

I FEEL THAT OBAMA IS A MUSLIM AND WHITE HATER. HE ATTENDED A HATE CHURCH IN CHICAGO FOR 20 YEARS, AND SAYS HE DIDN'T AGREE WITH THE PASTOR. THERE MUST BE A LOT OF IDIOTS, IF THEY BUY INTO THAT. THIS GUY CRITICIZED MCCAIN BECAUSE OF HIS AGE, AND BEING A BUSH CLONE, BUT I'VE HEARD SEVERAL SPEECHES WHERE MCCAIN DISAGREED WITH SEVERAL BUSH POLICIES. I FOR ONE DO NOT TRUST OBAMA. IS HE EVEN A CITIZEN OF OUR GREAT COUNTRY.
REMEMBER THE 9/11 ATTACKERS WHERE TAUGHT TO LIVE HERE AMONG US AND BECOME LIKE US, SO AS TO NOT CAUSE ANY SUSPICION. THIS IS WHAT OBAMA IS DOING.
